Riding actual drop bars made me stop caring about monstercross, dirt drops and the whole drop bars with fat tires retardation that seems to be taking off lately.
Drops are good for one thing only, going fast in a straight line, that's it.
You won't go fast on this bike, you won't be comfortable, you won't have good control offroad and your brake and drivetrain components will cost twice as much for no good reason.
>>
>>1081593
So you can be twitchy as hell on a tiny grass hill? It's more of a XC/trail bike. Modern geometry is long, low and slack.

I dunno. Seems like if you need them, the tiny rotors are probably too tiny? Unless that's for better modulation?

Not the tire tread I would generally prefer for cross, either. Looks good for flowing rock but not much else? Definitely bad for mud.

I get nervous doing ordinary stuff on drop bars. I like them for riding on the bike trail and trying to go as fast as I can. I can stay in the drops for long distances but that's not really the point. Riding in traffic and looking behind me is less enjoyable, riding off of stuff, over stuff, etc. doesn't work as well. I highly prefer flat/riser bars for commuting.

I hate to side with sieg but he's technically correct. The fibers of carbon and resin itself isn't expensive at all. It's the labor involved and tools required to make a finished product. (like that vacuum sealing oven for carbon fiber thermoplastics or cost of the molds/making the molds)

It's not galvanic corrosion by definition, even if it is similar. It's also easy to prevent and is not inherent to all carbon fibre parts, unlike using two different metals.
>>
>>1081947
>It's not galvanic corrosion by definition
It is. It is galvanic corrosion, by very definition. Carbon fibres are conductive and galvanic elements. It is commonly accepted that carbons interaction - while not a metal - is to be classed as galvanic corrosion. Your personal autism-speak definitions are irrelevant. Please look at this anodic index and see carbon listed - as per usual:

I'm really interested in the bike in OP's photo, although PV made some odd decisions with it. He keeps complaining about how he'd like a wider bar than he has on it, but he put a relatively low-flair Cowbell on it... a bar with more flair like a Cowchipper would feel a lot wider in the drops.

Yeah, PVD seems like the sort of weirdo who'd be all over Mr. Ultraromance's bars.

I'm also perplexed why PVD keeps riding that bike with 35-45mm gravel grinder tires. He fully admits that his forward geo isnt ideal XC riding, and he built the bike with clearance for a 2.25" in the rear, so why run it with skinny tires? Hardtails really benefit from throwing on the highest volume tire that will fit.

Not exactly.

Merckx-branded frames weren't actually ridden by Eddy, but they are highly regarded top-tier frames that were ridden by pro teams in the late eighties. They're especially desirable today because of their iconic paint schemes, and because they imply that the rider is part of the cognoscenti who takes riding seriously and is aware of the history of cycle racing.

Wasn't Merckx also quite involved regarding frame geometry and fit? I remember seeing him in some vid talking about pros and how they were riding improperly fitted frames (this was after he retired), but I'm not sure he actually applied this knowledge to the frames with his name on them

yeah, because they're cheap and easy to find used
the whole point of 90s rigids is they make great beaters/commuters and cost nothing
they're pretty sturdy, no suspension to maintain, can handle shit roads
people don't try to steal them, they're not fragile so its okay if they get dinged up
they're not even bad to ride, with good tires, pedals, a new saddle and barends they're comfy

Geometry:
Head tube angle: 58° (still not too slack)
Wheelbase: 1220mm
Bottom bracket drop: 45mm
Chainstay length: 420mm
Top tube effective: 590mm
Fork travel: 180mm
Fork steerer tube: 1.5"
Wheels diameter: 26"

Slackest head angle BTR makes is in their 26" Belter hardtail, 61°. Personally I like most their Ranger.
>>

I hope one day we go slack enough that we can use steering wheel shaped bars

Eh, no. We've already have parallel and divergent trends with cyclocross, gravel and monstercross type bikes used for fire roads, flow trails and singletrack. What might change with the ever changing fashion and interest is the market share and mind share balance between the various styles, but we will not see XC bikes going back to 70° HA and 15 cm stems like we once had, because they can't handle the terrain that has become XC riding. The gentler, flowier riding style niche is accounted for already. There's not one big all-ruling trend in the off road world like there was in the 80's and 90's. If you want a twitchy gravel monster with 650b semislicks it's already available.
>>
>>1083031
i meant sub 65 degree HA, as 67 is a pretty nice feeling HA for a bike which loves to be thrown around.

I did some googling and all I found were a scattering of posts asking if it was worth the money, and then one thread where the dude gave a pretty intense review, which said it was a good value (which I think is a stretch, and i take his mechanical aptitude with a grain of salt because he uses the phrase "gooseneck"), and that he was pleased with his purchase. Of course, he mentioned that he had to replace the brake pads, adjust most of the bearing surfaces, and fiddle with pretty much every system before the bike was mechanically sound. So if you are a talented mechanic or at least comfy working on bikes, it can be made to work.

As a bike tech, I've worked on multiple GMC Denali bikes and while they aren't exactly as bad as a Huffy Aerowind, I don't consider them to be good bikes. Maybe it is because I only see the bikes after life has chewed them up. They don't get preventative maintenance like good bikes get. They get the ER trauma care treatment.

The last time I had to work on one, the driveside cup on the rear wheel had separated from the hub shell (cheap hubs are usually just a steel cub pressed into a steel shell, prone to breaking free under great load or poor adjustment). The parts are very cheap, and without a ton of time and labor invested into the bike, it won't hold up very well.
If you are looking for a commuter, the money would be better spent on an older mountain bike. If you are looking for a road bike, save your money and get something like a closeout bike from bikeisland. If i had to give it praise, I would say the GMC frame is lightish, I guess?

I honestly don't know why it's THAT rare, because even thought it's obviously easier for manufacturers to get black one, since they don't make it on their own and it's a standard, you would expect to see it from time to time on some stupidly expensive bikes. It wouldn't even be hard, because it's just an outer layer with a translucent paint slapped on. You could probably do it yourself to any bike, carbon skinning is pretty easy, you would probably gain 100g max on the frame from one layer.

too much HA, anything apart from radical downhills is sluggish with that pronounces forward geometry. also, front wheel washouts can become a problem with that much slack.

Im a fan of forward geo, but keep it playfull, especially with HT, dont turn it into a school bus.

Emonda ALR, it was about $1500
I never rode a road bike in my life, so I need to get used to of lower drop handle bars.

Any quick tips to be efficient and get the most of that bike?
>>
>>1086825
why? discs are better at braking.
>>
>>1086909

>>1086917
drop handlebars are easy to get used to. Better question - what kind of pedals do you have on it? platform, or clipless, and have you ridden clipless before?

Nope

>what kind of pedals do you have on it? platform, or clipless

for the time being I have only some platform stuff, I'm thinking about some clipless solution, I feel not so secure on platforms when I'm spinning my crank >90 per minute.

Pic related is recommended?
>>
>>1087067

I have only ever ridden platforms (see>>1085340
), until I switched to clipless mtb recently (see>>1086496
)

There's a big difference - not just in not slipping off the pedals, but mainly in power transfer.

Of course - i did fall over my first time out (classic - pulled over to help out a fellow cyclist who needed a pump, and forgot to unclip).

The pedals you posted look like some hybrid platform/clipless. Looks a bit weird. You might want to try just regular mtb clipless (the reasoning is that mtb shoes are more comfortable to walk in), or regular road pedals.

Obviously, I'm no expert, only did 60km on clipless so far (1 ride), but there's a big difference.

Steel bikes are almost completely absent from UCI track. They're still in use in Keirin because it's heavily regulated with the aim of maintaining an arena to gamble on, rather than seeking out the best athletes. Furthermore, it's wrong to conflate track riding with fashionistas' one-time fascination with the track bike.

>"That was my first full suspension design for Bianchi, the one that Museeuw rode to eventual embarrassment at Paris-Roubaix," said Matt Harvey, product manager for Bianchi USA at the time and now the head of Enduro Bearings. "I eventually did two designs at Bianchi, but this one was probably the best. [It was] a two-inch short travel design that could be used for cross-country MTB and a road bike. It only had two pivots, relying on the seat stays to flex a couple of degrees, making a much stiffer rear end that didn't wag around. This was also the eventual problem, because a cromoly rear end can flex thousands of cycles this small amount whereas the Italian factory, against my pleading, made it out of 6061 [aluminum] without heat treating it."

They're a gimmick. You don't want to be fiddling around try to flip pedals the right way. Just get a pair of M520s like a sensible person.

clipless pedals with regular shoes are fine for quick rides, just getting around. Would rather have pedals that are good at something than annoying 100% of the time

I would buy wheels like that just to be able to use them on different bikes.

But I would go silver on the rims so it wouldn't look so goofy
