What kind of diesel shunters do you have in your parts of the world? Come share pictures and videos of these locomotives, in service or not.
>>
>>
>>1079065
GP-38s and GP-40s reign supreme.
Also, it's not shunting. It's called switching.
>>
>>1079537
In the UK where I am from it's called shunting.
>>
>>1079535
Interesting, where is this diesel from?
>>
>>1079694
Yeah, and the UK still doesn't have a standardized automatic coupler. I do not take its opinions on railroading seriously.

Sorry to send it to you again but I accidentally green wrote it first time.

Usually some old loco

Such as?

It is from the Indonesian Sate Railway
This model was built in 1958 and more are ordered in 1962 with improvements
These shunters are dying right now due to lack of parts and age
>>
>>1079991
Picture shown is C300 class
built in 1957 in East Germany
none of them are operating
>>
>>1079991
Interesting, how come the supplies can't be found?
>>
>>1079992
Therefore it's safe to say that it was exported to Indonesia during the 50s and 60s then?
>>
>>1079991
>>1079992
>>1079535

Manufacturer is LKM (VEB Lokomotivbau Karl Marx Babelsberg) the company was dissolved in 1992.

A metre gauge prototype of C300 series is still in Germany. Unfortunately not operational. This V 30 C type shunter belongs to Harz Narrow Gauge Railways and is stored in one of their sheds.

Are there plans to return the locomotive back in a running order will it be left in a static state?

Former SNCF class Y 5100, build in 1961, not working anymore.
>>
>>1080126
That's a shame, seeing it rust away like that.
>>
>>1079535
This locomotive was built by Krupp in West Germany in 1958 not related to the C300
>>
>>1080329
I have a question, why were these diesels shipped to Indonesia?

Was still in use some years ago, until motor failed.

So it was parked and some parts were picked for one of it's brother that was in better state

Picture related, the brother of the previous one (i work here) Was still running six month ago, but is currently out of service.
>>
>>1080416
So, it's safe to assume it will be out of service for a while I see.

Canada.
>>
>>1080330
For dieselization duh but most shunting duties are done by Diesel Electrics nowdays
>>
>>1080495
Ok then, but I belived there was another reason.
>>
>>1080494
Were these built in Canada or the US?
>>
>>1080494
The model at the top appears to be the one that my shop uses. I think we'd be better served by a Trackmobile.
>>
>>1079065
cyclefag here, no idea what shunters/switchers are so I looked em up. they're pretty badass

Yeah, it's nice to have a cyclefag here when they're not mocking us for liking trains.

Here is one shunter seen in my native UK.

See, the thought of shunting/switching cars never occurred to me being a cyclist. Then I learned there's a dedicated loco and job for attaching and detaching hundreds if not thousands of cars
>>
>>1080800
They're not really dedicated anymore. There are few SW-1000s left and most everyone uses GP-38s and 40s or SD-40s for switching now. The thing is a geep or SD is just fine for locals or even over the road freight. SWs not so much.
>>
>>1080807
you had me lost after the first sentence. think I need to jump back into fred threads or I'll catch autism
>>
>>1080808
SW is the line of engines EMD made like in your post.

GP is a series of engines EMD made because they were General Purpose 4 axle engines. Good for both switching and over the road freight.

SD is a series EMD made for Special Duties, which really means over the road freight. They are 6 axle engines with 4,000-4,400 horsepower compared to 2,000-3,000 for GPs with 2,000 being far more common.

And then also there are railcar movers, which are capable of driving on both roads and rail tracks.
>>
>>1080800
I get it, however in the UK they're still dedicated locomotives for shunting, unlike the US.

>>
>>1080330
I dunno, they fucking bought them?

Also, Indonesia were buddies with Soviet union during that time. The soviets did several infrastructure projects in indonesia
>>
>>1080818
That's something for MoW. Like it is used for positioning rail to be changed out.

Now for another Indonesian Shunter
This is BB300 class built in 1957-58 by Krupp in West Germany
They are used for shunting and Branch line duties
most of them are no longer in service
>>
>>1080821
Ok then.
>>
>>1080819
I never seen an 08 in a DB Schenker livery personally, only in photos such as this.

Yes, a new shunter has been buyed to replace it.

But I'm on the way to save it (and also the other one) from the scrap dealer, and move them in a heritage railway where I spend most of my free time.

One of the shunter of the aforementioned heritage railway, former SNCF class Y 6020
Built between 1924 and 1932 and used by the Chemins de fer de l'État and after by the SNCF.
Was heavily modernised in 1960 with a new type of gearbox.
Withdrawn from service in the 70s.
(livery is complete bullshit and the historical one)

>>1080705
Class 08. I wish to see one in real life. I like how they look.
>>
>>1081002
Not a bad looking diesel and if I recall correctly the SNCF was formed on the 1st of January 1938, right?

Just a pair of GMD GP-9's. The museum near me has preserved some smaller custom made switchers that were used at some of the pulp mills.

A GP40-2 and GP60 being used for switching near my home. Basically anything considered obsolete for long distance trains is relegated to locals, and switching.

4-axle locos like these two are completely retired from long distance freight trains now.

Class 1 railroads use locos from the 1970s-80s for these.

Norfolk and Western has a tendency to hang on to older locomotives and repurpose and redesign them. Here's a GP38 converted completely to battery power for switching duties.
>>
>>1084437
Another thing N&S likes to do with old locomotives is to remake them as "slugs." A slug is usually a loco whose prime mover is worn out, but its traction motors are still good. The diesel engine is pulled and concrete weights are put its place. The concept is that a diesel electric can generate move power than it can use at slow speeds, so the slug is electrically connected to a standard locomotive to use its excess electrical power to add tractive effort. Yard slugs are generally cut down, like this one, for visibility.

>>1084440
There are also road going slugs. These have a full height bodies and cabs. Crews like to put them at the head of a consist since they are noise ad vibration free. The way to spot a road slugs is the general lack of radiators and louveres on the hood.
>>
>>1084440
It's just NS. There is no &.
>>
>>1084452
I stand corrected. The Sheffield, Alabama hump yard has an overpass above the highway. I see slugs on the overpass occasionally.
>>
>>1084671
Is there actually a hump there? Are you sure it's not flat switching now?

Lately NS was using this CN SD60 for locals/yard duty yesterday.
