How does it feel being poor? If your tires weren't handmade by virgin Italian mermaids, you have no place on this board
>>

Memes aside, tires do make a huge difference. Tbqh famalam I would rather ride on the original Japanese 27" tires on my 1983 bike than replace them with the garbage CST 27's

They are holding 95psi just fine and I ride pretty rough roads

I soon need new tires for my bike (24").
I mostly drive in the city and want low rolling resistance without spending too much.
Do you have any suggestions?

I keep thinking they can't be THAT much better so I'll just ride these kendas to death.. but they don't seem to wear at all.

send help

Running Cyclocross Speed tires on my touring bike at the moment. Holding up fairly well at 2,100 km with about 70% being on pavement. Quick on pavement, not as good as I'd like on loose gravel / sandy material, but if was expecting that tradeoff for speed and durability.
>>
>>1073242
Do it on your favorite bike if you've been riding that long at least. Something like GP4000s or Vittorias on a good road bike

it's not that they are shit but it's not anything special for the price especially when compared to Continental's GP and GP4000s line
>>
Not a Schwalbe shill, but Schwalbe Ones are on sale at Jenson. $16 for 23s, $24 for 28s. Just goes to show you how unpopular and inferior these tires must be to be sold at the price of entry level tires from other manufacturers. Also they have a 5 off 25 coupon.

>>
>>1073167
I came here to also what tires to buy?

I have a Trek road bike, I use it only for recreational cycling. It still has the stock Bontrager tires, I wanna get 25mm.

In the past I ran Ritchey slicks on an older bike, and was happy with them.

How do they compare to Gatorskin?

What other brand should I consider?

Budget is like $40-80 per tire.
>>
>>1073489
I believe the common advice is to get conti 4000 if you cant decide.

Supposedly gatorskins are one of the slowest slicks made...
>>
>>1073489
Oh and if you don't race I'd just get the biggest you can fit.
>>
>>1073167

Vittoria Rubino Pros are fantastic. Get Pro. They're cheap

Schwalbe Marathon Supremes are my GOAT. But I like fat tires and riding slow. They feel as fast as a roadie 120 tpi tire, never get flats. The only difference is the weight, which you cannot avoid with a soft, cushy 40mm tire
>>
>>1073475
>Not a Schwalbe shill, but Schwalbe Ones are on sale at Jenson. $16 for 23s, $24 for 28s. Just goes to show you how unpopular and inferior these tires must be to be sold at the price of entry level tires from other manufacturers. Also they have a 5 off 25 coupon.

wtf they were like $60 last month

>recreational riding

it's literally 2 fucking watts, it doesn't matter. what matters is when you're fucking around with levers and co2 cartridges because your fancy racing tires exploded after you ran over a bird feather
>>
>>1073558
>it's literally 2 fucking watts, it doesn't matter. what matters is when you're fucking around with levers and co2 cartridges because your fancy racing tires exploded after you ran over a bird feather

Have you ridden 30 tpi tires recently? The can ruin the entire experience. Go big on tires. Memeskins are harsh crap that suck in rain.

Get some Conti GPX90010201 or Marathon Supremes if you want fat ones.

That's literally all you need for road stuff
>>
>>1073559
"tpi" is not a unit of power, please re-read the SI brochure
>>
>>1073558
Literally no one cares that the memeskins are slightly slower. What makes them shit is the rubber compound which is vastly worse than the black chili one used in GP4KSII. Also they have shitty low quality casings which makes for a shitty ride.
>>
>>1073558
>it's literally 2 fucking watts
Gatorskins have 7 W more than 4000S2 per tyre. 14 watts is definitely an appreciable increase.
>>1073562
Is there an SI unit for threads per inch, senpai?
>>
>>1073562

Who the fuck said it was a unit of power?

Have you ridden 30 tpi tires?

Have you slept in 200 thread count sheets?

Have you /n/-posted on an 85 IQ?
>>
>>1073618
autism, the post.
>>
Memeskins are like a slightly upgraded shitty stock OEM CST/KENDA, and is slightly better all around speed, puncture resistance, ride quality and durability. I am convinced most of the people that buy memeskins buy them as their first expensive tire, because they want to upgrade tires, but don't want a shard of glass to ruin their expensive fancy new tires so they get puncture resistant and they aren't willing to trade puncture resistance for speed and ride quality.

I wouldn't even bother upgrading tires if the only upgrade was memeskins, it's a relatively minor upgrade for the money. It's all about the speed and ride quality for me. I will compromise a little just so I don't get an especially fragile tire.
>>
>>1073611
>Is there an SI unit for threads per inch, senpai?
Well, you could measure threads per centimeter.

>>1073629
>>1073559
>>1073598
What about the 4seasons? Do they ride more like the Gatorskins or the Gp4k? Tempted by that 32mm size.

So I've looked at...

Ritchey comp slicks
Gatorskin
Schwalbe
Michelin Power Comp
Vittoria

Which of these are my best choice? Again, I only do recreational cycling, I don't race, or compete. I don't get flats. I rarely ride on the street.
I want good grip, and tires that are good for 5+ hour cycling session.
I put on maybe 500-700 miles a year.

Gratuitously adding the word "expensive" doesn't make puncture resistance a bad thing

I can totally understand not giving a shit if you just ride on weekends, but when getting to work on time matters, most people are willing to sacrifice 1mph if it means flatting once every couple of years rather than once a month

Just swapped out the tired on my cross/town bike. Went from some 700x32 Kendas to some 700*42 Continental Cross tires.
>>
>>1073725
But then you wouldn't buy memeskins. You'd buy marathons.
>>
I got my beater bike with some goodyear cruiser tires. At least that's what I think they are. They're goodyear at least. Would this be a decent upgrade? It's 26" aluminum mtb that I'm trying to fix up to be my dedicated commuter and errand bike.

Now just to find some locally so I can ride this weekend

Schwalbe hs159
>>
>>1073914
umm.. isn't that like a 10€ puncture protected commuter tire you see on old ladies bikes?
>>
>>1073887
I'm a bike noob so do you mind explaining how they're heavy?
>>
>>1074014
If you're a Burger like me, you may be more used to the use of ounces and pounds as measurements of weight. Essentially, the Schwalbe tires that you linked weigh 1-1/4 pounds per tire, whereas—for example—a Panaracer Pasela 1.75" tire weighs 100 grams less (1/5th the Schwalbes' weight less!) for a small cost in width. This reduction in rotating mass will help you to accelerate a bit quicker, and make the bicycle feel a bit more sprightly.
>>
>>1073901

your LBS must love you
>>

Spot the LBS shill. We got ourselves a jr. mechanic here. Can't even come up with half coherent memetext. Memeskins are overrated pieces of shit pushed by LBS shills to make high margins by selling $60 "upgrade" tires to anyone and everyone, including people that don't want race slicks.
>>
>>1074153
I'm the LBS shill now? Because I called you out for being too stupid to pay market rate for the most popular tires on earth?

For a tyre of its construction the marathon is surprisingly fast, on these drum tests at least.

I suspect it would lose more speed on shitty roads compared to supple tyres, but on smooth stuff it's not bad.

The thing I hate most about gatorskins is how hard they are to put on. I have had to go to bike shops to get them installed

http://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/road-bike-reviews/continental-ultra-sport-ii-2015

which zaffiro though? Apparently there are other models but the one that was tested here is total fucking garbage. Heavy, slow and easily punctured. The ultra sport 2 is at least a reasonable weight.
>>
>>1074695

Zaffiros are fine. They get a bad rap because Rubinos are awesome and cost about the same.
>>
>>1074738

I would avoid Zaffiro slicks.
They are legitimately bad. The treaded version rides better, for whatever reason. They do best at roughly 10% lower PSI than you would normally ride.
>>
>>1074778
>>1074738
>>1074776
It's not the slicks that are bad. It's the Vittoria non-pro versions that are bad.

The pro versions are folding bead and twice the TPI of the non-pro versions, so a Rubino non-pro is the same as a rebranded Zaffiro pro. A zaffiro non-pro is just garbage.

They do this so they can put wire bead tires on OEM bikes and make it look like they have the next tire up.
>>
hibestly not much of a difference in tires.

the shitty ones from like kenda have exposed and corroded/rusty steel beads

the super shitty folding beat cotton thread tires are death traps

there isn't any specific best tire imo

and the ones that everyone claims are the best in the world are just whatever tires they're currently running
