Good job. I remember this bike when you first starting poasting it. That chainring could use a BBG bashguard on the outside imho
>>
>>1070093
thanks, it's certainly come a long way but ive finally got it right where i want it, as far as parts go

Bashguard for what, though? I rarely ever have the chain come off the outside, and ive got a stop on the inside to keep it from falling in
>>
>>1070094

what exactly do you do with this bike . commute ?

also can you explain a little why it is the way it is ?
>>
>>1070097
commuting, yeah, and then take it out for longer rides when i have time.

i got it when i first got into cycling and it was my only worthwhile bike for a couple years, and just through trying to figure out what kind of riding i wanted to do, i'd swap out parts, adjust things, etc. etc. and it's finally made it's way to this. spent a fair bit of time "trimming the fat" and just removing bits and pieces that i didnt use

when i first got it, it was a front suspension 26" MTB with a shock seatpost and a HUGE headset/stem rise
>>
>>1070099

have you ever ridden a propper tt bike ?

is there still something you are unhappy with ?
>>
>>1070101
i have not, but i'd like to get one someday. i actually JUST got those aerobars a few days ago so im still breaking them in/getting used to them

There's really nothing im unhappy with, the clearance between the fork and the front tire is a little high but it just means i can swap a 700c in there if i want to.
>>
>>1070102

with the super forward position it really looks like a tt bike when you squint even with the bars.

you ran the smaller wheel to make up for the large a-c of the 26"mtb fork , right ?

could't you just swap for a road disc fork and then use 28" fornt wheel ?
>>
>>1070103
Currently it's mostly because i dont have another slick 700c tire for the front since the rims i have came with really heavy, knobby 40s since they came off of a "flat bar hybrid" kind of thing

also running 700c/26 is more fun than i thought, and it makes the bike a bit more unique.

I've got a carbon road bike that im building up at the moment so i think i'll keep this one the way it is so i don't have 2 bikes that are too similar to one another

yeah the smaler front wheels looks really firece !

here's my current main bike btw , I love working on a build until it really is the way you want it to be.

still need to upgrade the fork add the front deraileur and finish the rear disc adapter.

currently on hold because I got a 105 5800 group for way to cheap with barcons instead of brifters.
now I'm building up a steel roadbike with the group and gonna diy me some genevalle shifters
>>
>>1070105
Looks like a real hardy workhorse there, man. I've always like the look of thin tubed steel hardtails with thick ass tires

How do those bars feel with such a high saddle-to-stem drop?

Rear disc brake, don't have a front because the 26" front hub isn't set up for discs, the 700c front hub/wheel I have IS but I'd rather not mess with it and get by just fine with only the rear

This.

I was putting my commuter back together after stripping it to the frame, and the last thing I had to do was put the front brake on. But it was getting dark, and I REALLY wanted to take it for a quick spin. I mean, it has *a* brake, how bad could I fuck up?

TL;DR I ended up with stitches in my chin.

>>
>>1070296
Lol no idea it was such a hot topic around here, I've had literally no issues at all running just a rear brake throughout many commutes and weekend rides, I'm vigilant enough to know what's going on so I don't worry about /needing/ a front brake.

I tend to ride in a way and modulate my speed so that I never have to actually come to a full stop

Cheers homie.

I'd never go 29" as it's too much of a compromise (more weight, weaker wheels, less room for suspension travel and things like short chainstays) and I'm not tall enough that 26" feels too small.

I'll probably eventually end up going to 27.5" just because 26" stuff will become more limited (some manufacturers are already not offering certain models in 26) and 27.5 will be the more common option, but not because it's actually any better.

Here is my basic bitch bicycle. Its heavy as fuck but I like climbing. Paradox.

I know its a rad bro gnar lifechanging adventure flannel groad bike...but it suits the shitty roads where I am...and I am slowly turning it into as much of a pure road bike as I can. Next stop new pedals and some new tires now Winter is finally gone. Cant decide whether or not to go for ye olde faithful gp4000 or something gumwall for dat instagram look.

Yeah but for real though. For the most part I stayed under budget but the Surly Tuggnut, the Nitto UI-2 stem, and the ISM PN 1.1 saddle are too spendy for the budget that the rest of the bike was built in. The racks of course cost a hundred each but they were really a gift to myself for finally finishing this project after two years of low self esteem and severe doubts. Really nice bits though, the lot of them. The bike is actually super cozy. The handlebars are a set of Nitto RB-009, and are superb. The flats are very wide and are great for casual riding, and the drops are excellent for bearing down for climbs and sprints. Unfortunately there's no real middle ground. The flats are just like those you'd find on a road bar, and the horns are like the drops, but there's no "hood" position that serves as middle ground. It's just a spectacular bar though and I'd recommend it to anybody. Better with gears though for sure, it's really meant for hauling on in the drops. The bars and stem flex a bunch, keep that in mind. A better stem would help a lot. Used white cloth wrap purely for A E S T H E T I C, and finished with twine because I was too lazy to use something else. On 28c Gatorskins (in a garbage apartment), a lot of broken glass so yeah. 36 Sapim Laser spokes per wheel and a carbon fork and seatpost; rides with a lot of cush.

I'd love to keep talking details if anybody's interested.

>>1070271
Those bendy sheet metal mounting tangs are pieces of shit. Get yourself a "surly rear rack upper kit" and nigger rig it to your rack and frame for a MUCH more secure connection. Won't suffer fractures from flexing unlike those two trash can ticklers.
>>
>>1071776
I appreciate the concern, but looking at the way my stays line up with my rack, the rack is probably too narrow for that mounting system to line up properly with the eyelets on my stays.

And the mounting bits on the rack would probably get in the way of the trunk bag.
>>
>>1070239
did you get that seat from your moms bike?
>>
>>1071781
Have fun dying in a horrific garbage fire.

At LEAST put on a rear fender. You may feel the bag is good enough but it literally takes two seconds to find a solution online for low clearances, which may be the reason it's not on? Or it's literally just "my trunk bag keeps my ass dry", in which case think of your poor drivetrain. Only thing missing, dude. Please f a m.
>>
>>1071786
Oh yeah, I've been faffing about on that for probably more than a year now.
>bike only has one set of eyelets
>bike has dick brakes, so need a specific rack
It if was a normal rack it would be easy to mount the fenders on the outside of the rack bolt, but with this it would have to on between the eyelet and rack, which gives me the heebie-jeebies.

The solution is, as far as I can tell, getting longer bolts and putting the fender mounts on the other side of the eyelets and keeping it on with a nut. Just need to actually get the requisite hardware.

If it's any consolation it doesn't rain that much here.

>>1071809
Thanks, I'm really proud of having actually finished it. Truth be told I still need to properly true and tension the rear wheel...

Okay, I'm just gonna drop some more details on this since no one asked. I forgot to mention but I got a set of the Velo Orange wing nuts. Work real nice but you need a chain tensioner, hence the Surly tuggnut. I also laced the front wheel three-leading, three-trailing. Memes! The fender on the rear needed to be unbolted easily to make room to remove the rear wheel. Instead of remembering that I could just use, ya know, some actual wingnuts for the task, I got a set of "honjo #8 u-ring type daruma" to hold the fender on, but the stays that came with my fender were a svelte 3.5mm diameter and the Honjo hardware called for 5mm diameter stays. Oops. I very nearly gave up on a solution after trying a bunch of different things, then finally struck on using some brass tubing from my local hardware store to shim the fender stays out to a better size. So yeah, the fender stays on the rear are capped off with a length of brass tubing each to facilitate the mounting of a $30 set of bolts that I didn't actually need if I had just realized that regular wing nuts would have worked. Oops. I am also not proud of the nitto stem/handlebar, as my bike flagrantly states "NITTO NITTO NITTO" across the front now.

Also to whoever suggested I get a "finishing kit", fudge off bud. No way I'd get a quality -stem -seatpost -crank -handlebars -saddle for under fifty quid. Also normies already 'mire b/c they don't know what they're looking at to begin with. "Oh, is that one of those 'fast bicycles'?"

I could have a sheet-metal bracket fabricated out of 14 Ga. stainless steel, just like the tang that came from Nitto. I was planning on an extra "t" section of metal that would extend sideways from the brake hole with tabs on the end for those struts to attach to. Bonus points if I fab that segment to wrap around the entire fork and attach to the Sheldon fender nut on the back. In essence it would be a closed loop of metal attached at the front and back of the fork; very strong. Then there would be the usual tang just sticking out the front to bolt to the bottom of the rack as usual. I need a metals shop to do the fabrication though because 14 ga stainless metal is too burly to bend at home. I just can't find a place that does this kind of work though!
By the way fuck Shimano br-5800 brakes. They are incompatible with 98% of things designed to bolt in behind the brakes. Fuck them.

>>1072049
Thanks senpai. One last detail I'm not proud of though: See the yellow caps in the crank arms? i use it primarily to get to work lol, i only recently got the bike so im hoping to do some tris tts or duathalons this summer.

The gatorskin is a good (not great) tire, they are fairly puncture resistant but are more prone to the sidewall disintegrating over time than other puncture resistant tires. they aren't very supple so i don't have a whole bunch of confidence throwing it into a corner. that being said i have never punctured on a gatorskin they are pretty available, and are usually pretty cheap
>>

Put those fake drops in the middle of where the grips are now and drop some dummy hoods on them--either the Dia-Compe DC138 set, or the Cane Creek tandem hoods. Then lose the mountain bar ends and wrap the whole kablooie in thick bar tape. Still not great but the drops will be in a much better place. Also means you can skip out on the mountain bar ends and still try out the flats-hoods-drops trifecta you would find on a regular road bar with the addition of further flat-ness past where road bars would normally end.

Notice a Wald rack, the water cage bosses tore out, the inline brake housing adjusters to join two different colors of housing, the horrible tearing of the brake levers, those dank friction shifters, and that Knog light pointing up towards the stars in the sky. Drop by your local co-op and try to find a set of replacement levers. Finding ones with built-in friction shifter mounts is gonna be hard though... A better bet may be to strip the anodize chemically and then file and sand the scratches out. I can see rust peeking out through the torn out bottle mounts, you might want to rust proof your frame.
Something tells me you care little for a e s t h e t i c though... at LEAST fix the light; mount it on your handlebar maybe?

No wait you also have barrel adjusters for your shift cables too...Why??? ? ????

That's a Showa rack pal.. muh sun tour XC 9000ish thumbies are Indexed for 6 speed, but have a lot of extra throw after the 6th gear, it allows me to use the "ghost click" and run 7 speed indexed. It's coupled to a 7spd cassette shimano hub and 8 spd LX derailer. All that mess is pretty sync'd up and there is no need for the barrel adjusters. The story behind them is not very interesting, it's just me being cheap and not buying a new pack of housing. There is a mix of jagwire and shimano sis housing from past builds, the adjusters allowed me to make the housings long enough. I would've liked all black or all white housing. Also the bosses aren't stripped out, the hardware is rusted to shit. The frame isn't that rusty at all just surface rust from scratches

Diamondback Topanga, I think it's from 93-94. Got it for 40€, it has a Shimano Exage 300 3x7 groupset with Biopace chainrings and some fresh Deore LX shifters.
I fitted Schwalbe Marathon 26x2 tires, a Selle Italia seat, wider flat pedals, new Shimano cantis and a Topeak rack. It's been an ultra reliable touring machine and my perfect grocery-getter.

It's comfortable for long distance touring but it can also go offroading without trouble. Some weekends I fit Schwalbe Table Top 26x2'25 tires and I get rid of the rack to go offroad and get dirty. It's an absolute blast in the trails and gives me that perfect euphoria/terror mix when descending.
Maybe I'm just getting nostalgic and this thing brings me to my first MTB rides on my father's bike, a 1993 Specialized Rockhopper. Does it really matter? I enjoy this bike.

No no, I just mean that the headset isolates the frame from the fork, so there's no interference between the two. You could literally use a pole up a homeless man's ass to hold the front wheel and as long as you bolt everything together right your frame shouldn't know the difference.

WHAT IS THAT REAR RACK I'VE NEVER SEEN ONE THAT BOLTS UP LIKE THAT

Also, the front render will probably rattle around a bunch under the fork. I've seen them bolted to a front rack but you would have to buy a front rack for that. Or use the brake hole to bolt an extra bracket to. A rear rack that bolts to the outside of the seat stays would be more stable under heavy loads (though the one you have is visually pleasing). And mount the rear light onto the rack and not your seatpost bud, never know what you'll put on top of your rack. Might block your light inadvertently.

No rattling whatsoever. We have cobblestone here. The fenders are really silent.
Rear rack is a Tubus fly. It is basically a makeshift solution that looks quite nice.
I didn't want to bend the Fly's rod so I had to somehow fix it to the seattube. At that point it had a diameter of 32mm. I ordered pic related in 31.8. The clamp now not only clamps onto the seatube but also holds the rack in place. Is tight and stiff as necessary and I didn't even have to take off material. Plus it is a literally perfect fit not even damaging the paintjob. Shimano SM-AD91 in this case.
>>
>>1072508
All the components were in my possession prior to building this boi. I've only spent on the tires and tubes plus less than 5 bucks for the brake cables. The brooks and rack came off a nishiki fixed conversion I used to ride. The ESI grips, salsa stem and soma bars came from an old torelli that I wrecked a while back too. I'm stoked on this thing. Literally everything from my used parts bin fit the bike. The angle of the rack doesn't matter much when I have my trunk rigged up
>>
>>1072353
The tires are okay, not too noisy and when pumped up to 65 psi they roll pretty fast. I like them at around 40psi for bruising around
>>
>>1072513
I thought about the rear light and I put it there because I want to prohibit myself from taking too much stuff. The tent will go under the top tube and I will only take the two small panniers.

1. Fork (Suntour XCR, RockShox XC30, etc)
2. Stem/Bars (a straight angled riser and short flat stem)
3. Rear Shock
4. Wheelset, Hubs
5. Drivetrain (just more Altus or better, go to 8 speed)
6. A2Z adapter and rear disc

Rides pretty nice. I tilted the seat just a little too forward in this pic.

I changed the Crankset to Altus. The seat is WTB Speed. Pedals are Sunlite Bear Trap. Front light lumina 400 niterider. Rear light biologic revue. Hard Case Zixtro (sp). Lock is 5/8" Brinks. Water carrier by MSW (really tough alu). Brake levers are metal Tektro. Everything else stock.

Tempting, for what amounts to bike bling for an extremely casual user like me. Thus far I've had hub dynamos from Shimano (HB-NX60) and from Sturmey Archer (XL-FDD). Not very inspiring offerings but well within budget and real durable.

That said, this is one of those products that probably gets less attention than it should. Mention it every time and every where. Get the word out; there just aren't enough products like this in the world.
>>
>>1072975
that puts it at something like 1.5-2x the cost of a dyno hub, but when you factor in the cost of new spokes and a rim, or just using your existing wheel and doing it yourself (but most likely having to get new spokes) then factor in the time of taking on the project, or especially if you'd be paying someone to build the wheel around it--then it doesn't seem like all that bad of a deal.

If you're a really good wheelbuilder who does it a lot and are fast and accurate, maybe the time is insignificant. For everyone else, the Velogical is maybe not as expensive as it may seem, all things considered.

>>1072813

Really I just mean that it's one of those cool niche products that never gets enough love--like the wacky handlebar shock-absorbing mount for cell phones and cameras by dia compe (and others). It's just a type of thing that's really difficult to find but really cool to have access to if you're in that niche. If I didn't already have two bikes with dynamos (and a spare set of battery light kicking around) I might consider this for the Motobecane built I posted earlier in the thread.

Even though it's massive overkill for what I usually do.

The trend now with wealthier cyclists is to build a second bike out of certain manufacturer vintage frames (like colnago) and putting di2 on it.

I have no problem with college kids who buy a scwinn varsity for $4 at a garage sale and duct tape the tubes and tires and soak the chain in WD 40 to ride it for 2 years to sell to the next kid.

Yeah front hub is a Deore XT DH-T785. Fairly standard dyno hub; 6V@3W.

Front light is a SON Edelux II, rear is a B+M Secula Plus which comes in two mounts: fender as shown and seat stay.

Wiring for the rear is routed underneath the rear fender, through two holes on each entry/exit point with relief grommets. The overall effort is totally worth it, it looks like it was designed to be done such a way with no telltale signs of wiring to the rear sticking out like a sore thumb. I've only had the chance to take it out for a short spin but I'm plenty pleased with it. The rear has a good solid 3-4 minute standlight time before it begins to dim significantly which is real nice.

Rack was just what they had in the store cheap to see if it is worth getting a proper one. Thinking I will use a bottle cage and bottle to carry cables, tubes, tools, pump etc in one, and medical supplies in the other.
Then use camelback style bag for water, top of rack for sleeping bag, one side of any camping equipment, the other for clothes and locks. Then handlebar bag for valuables.
Opinions?

Question. What in the world do people bring on tour that they have to mound it up that high. I road for 6 months through the winter keeping a weeks worth of food on me at all times, and I still barely managed to fill up my four bags.
>>
>>1073283
I toured for 6 months as well, 4 panniers and a backpack isn't so crazy, I could've managed to get rid of the backpack if my sleeping bag wasn't so huge.

Still have to finish rigging brake and trans cables, and readjust to fit, this is the saddle that came with the bike (1984 department store no-name bike), I usually use a different saddle but I thought I'd give this dickhead old saddle a try.

>$10 friction shifters
>rear derailleur off a Walmart mountain bike
>27x32mm, I want to go down to 28mm
>floped and chopped handlebar (comfy af just sitting on it, haven't tried it yet though)
>I'll get some cheap bar tape don't worry
>ghetto plastic clips
>one piece boat anchor crank

idk if it's a brokefag bike or a irl shitpost but it's gotten me around before. I'll have a cosy paved commute to my new job so I figured I'd replace the broken spoke and get riding again.

by the way I know the saddle clampy thing is on backwards I was drunk

Cool, that rack looks good brah. My first mtb was an orange voodoo from an estate sale. Is that frame new?
>>
>>1073261
That's hawt! I want to campy my 80s Schwinn that already has 10spd shimano. I've heard that a shimano cassette could work with the campy shifters
>>
>>1073261
Nice bike! I was thinking about doing something like this to my miyata 610 as well. Is it difficult? I read that you have to bend out the rear part of the frame so it can accept wider modern parts. The previous owner of my bike put an 8 speed cassette on it, but not sure if something like shimano claris would work

I use this for my commute to downtown, 20 miles total there and back for the day.

These are the weekend tires - Continental traction pro (vintage) - https://www.bricklanebikes.co.uk/continental-traction-pro-dual
>>
>>1073239
These are 35c Paselas and they sit at nearly 38mm wide with these rims, which are pretty wide to be fair. I don't see a problem with running 650b*42 tires on the Nature Boy at all, if that's what you were getting at. Far easier to fit a larger tire in when it _is_ a smaller diameter.
>>
>>1073626
I have a different frame, but thanks for the measurement. I have around 46mm in the chainstays and the wheel is maybe 1-2 mm off center so around 42 actual size is biggest that could fit. My 650b wheels are 19mm internal (XC mtb wheels) so sounds like the 650b paselas won't fit.

I can't make any sense of panaracers other stuff, how are the pari-moto, gravelking, col de la vie and others different from the pasela, they all seem pretty much the same.

those look pretty nice. Especially the intenso.

I was actually thinking about getting into some racing and selling my via nirone 7 here and upgrading to an intrepida or intenso.

Finished up minus the handlebar tape. I forgot how much this thing makes you want to fucking go. The old hokey saddle is actually comfy and functional as fuck.

Are the tires on my 50 year old cross bike /fat/ enough or should I spread the chainstays more and move from 700x42 to 700x45?
>>
>>1073706
If anybody ever tells you to take off the spoke protector, rape them until they stop talking. Metal spoke protectors need to come back already, this plastic shit is cancer. Composite like crabon mite b cool too tho...?
>>
>>1073745
Yeah unless it is rusted, the old metal ones look really nice.

>>1073706
Quick like hack Detatch the levers from the mounting loops, put bar tape over the mounting hardware, and then just cut away to remount the levers..
>>
>>1073737
I don't think you would gain anything going bigger. The kind of terrain that would benefit from even bigger tires would be pretty scary to ride in what looks like road position.

I think around 40mm is the best for this type of bike.
>>
>>1073782
Good tip, I think I can get around the cables to the securing bolt if I loosen the "on the go bolt" thing without having to undo everything; I try not to clamp the cable more than once. Going for obnoxious light pink bar tape if I can find some online that's decent and cheap, so I don't know how well it would cut like that, however, I might have two goes at it with one set since there isn't much bar left.

Other than that, the "flop and chop" was a major success, so much more control.

White tyres are shit and what the fuck is going on with those bars? If you wanted more drop you could've just lowered your stem. Also the random yellow cable housings need to go, and whilst you're replacing them shorten the one going to the rear derailer.
>>
>>1073937
seconding an explanation on that bar. it's needlessly complex and makes the profile look pretty ugly: \``/

I will say that the paint and trim might be the only one I've seen with current styling that I actually think looks good. it seems like current designers really like lime-green-on-black and the way they draw the trim design always looks retarded. but yours is nice.
>>
>>1073938
It's agreed all over that white tires are the fastest tires. I like the way the bars look an feed too. Thanks for the cable tips
>>
>>1073954
I don't know whether you're being serious but white tyres are objectively worse. Tyres are black for a reason, it's due to the ingredients put into them and if you get rid of those and substitute them for ones to make it white you end up with shit rubber.

Thanks man. The paint is what sealed the deal. It originally came with Claris stock and I swapped it for sram force. I fell for the meme but the bars are cool.

>>
>>1073862
I wish there were some good gumwall/skin wall tires in a 700*40 size. I'd have gotten them for sure.

But The position isn't too aggressive on this bike. I hit the jumps with it, so much as one can with a bike like this.
>>
>>1073918
If I can make one more recommendation. Interrupter leavers are *much* better for flipped handlebars than trying to convert the stock ones to the purpose. You can usually pick them up for 15 bucks, then just run the housing beneath the bar tape.

Compass barlow pass
>>

Hell yeah, found a site with free shipping selling them for 20 bucks, messenged them to figure out how to select silver, it says they sell it in silver or black but I'm too much of a jackass to figure out how to order apparently.

My rear brake has a little oil on the rim which I need to take care of but my front seemed to work well enough, however I'm taking your advice; it's a *little* sloppy despite the minor adjustments I need to make, but in the long term I'm sure cyclocross brakes will be better.

I was kinda concerned with how the flop and chop would turn out but I'm incredibly pleased with the result, I never used the drop bars much after I broke my collar bone on it, and this setup seems much more stable.

Thanks homie
>>
>>1074050
If you want the ultimate in comfy, I've run a bike with dual cross brakes. One set on the bullhorn ends, on set near the stem. You can break in any hand position then.

>Compass barlow pass
>Road treat.
Sorry man, that's just not what I'm looking for. It's an off-road/cross bike, actually.
>>
>>1074054
There is a knobbly model in the same size, too. You might be surprised what can be done on a slick tyre, though.
>>
>>1074053
Damn, comfy overload. I used to be all pretentious tour de France go hard status, but now I've grown up and just want to commute

This? Not so sure that I like the way the treat looks. And at 80 dollars a tire, it just isn't attractive enough.
>>
>>1074070
Hey, one can go hard while being comfy. Both of my bikes are 20 lbs or more. My black bike up there is 24lbs. My road bike is 20lbs before bottles.

Honestly that extra 5 lbs just doesn't bother me, even on road rides.
