bicycle related tool talk
questions, comments, favorite tools etc.

pic is my EDC tool kit. I'm thinking about replacing my gerber diesel since it's 4+ years old with 2-3 broken drivers, recommendations? I have no reason to replace the hexus II but it's close to touching 10 years old and would receive an honorable retirement on my tool bench for living a serviceable life.
>>
>>1069692
I would just not carry a non bicycle multi tool. You shouldn't need the folding knives and scissors, and you have screw drivers so those are redundant. Instead carry a patch kit, a decent tire lever (Pedro's), a pump. I like to carry electric tape. But like most edc threads, you carry way too much. Adjustable wrench? Why?

I do carry a patch kit that I didn't picture since it's just a jar of elmer's rubber cement and a couple of patches. I have a Pro Bike Tools pump coming in, hopefully they are a good brand?

I hear you on carrying too many tools, my bike bag is way too heavy but I also do more than bike work so I kinda need the adjustable crescent and gerber. I'll be carrying a mini floor pump with me so my bag will only get heavier.
>>
Is there really any use for a chain breaker? I've never come acrosss a need for one cycling and maintaining my bikes, although i do use chains with power links... Is it only good for when putting a new chain on and sizing it?
>>
>>1069784
>Is it only good for when putting a new chain on and sizing it
That's all I use it for. Most chains use a master link for easy service. Create a frankenchain and make a chain from the chain snippings?
>>
>>1069784
For when your chain snaps on a non master/powerlink for whatever reason
Also 7 and below speed chains don't use master/powerlinks AFAIK
>>
Gonna be getting a new bike soon, it will have a style of BB that i have not come across so far, BB72-41B. Sites say that it is a press fit bottom bracket.
Are there any tips/tricks as to working with/ using / maintaining these guys?
I've only ever used square taper
What are the tools requited for these?

I'm partial to Wiha keys, Knipex pliers and cutters, Park Tool cone wrenches, and knock-offs on the little infrequent stuff.
>>
>>1069839
You don't seem to use your tools very often. Those bikes also look suspiciously clean.

>>
>>1069860

Because the nasty old hand me down tools those replaced and dirty bikes would make for a shitty picture.
>>
>>1069861
do you know how to repair them? I spent like 17 bucks for that fucking thing and it has a leak
vulcanizing rubber cement or someshit?
fuck butyl

>>1069821

no its just my little shitty work spot in a little hovel in my gross basement

i need some posters of cipollini or something
>>
>>1069868
I've had good luck with high quality, soft standard patches glued wet. The tubes seem to form a coat of sort and they're covered in talcum powder, so clean well with soap, smear with glue and let dry to freshen the rubber, glue the patch wet and take care to get the edges of the patch well wet or it might peel.

At least, this worked with the Michelin latex tubes I've fixed. Haven't punctured my Challenge ones yet. *fingers crushed*
>>
>>1069808
Press fit usually means you'll be advised to use (((specialty tools))) but with a little creativity, c clamp, and some punches the job can be done

What is the best pump? And why is it the topeak road morph?
>>
>>1069900
don't do this

bike shops charge like 10 bucks to press a BB in with a tool that guarantees correct installation.

if you bootleg it with bolts and washers or clamps you can deform the BB shell if you fuck up and that will ruin the frame.

I had one of these but didn't want to carry it in my jersey so I mounted it to my frame. I didn't like how it looked on my frame so I took it off and just bought a Lezyne Control drive. It fits nicely in my saddle bag and I'm able to carry 3 16G Co2 cartridges. I never ride with anyone and if I have to use 3 cartridges on a ride well that's just a side that it wasn't meant to be and it's time to call someone.

CO2 Inflators

question, for you guys who use these CO2 inflators instead of a frame pump

some of them work with un-threaded canisters; can I use one of these to do whippets?
>>
>>1070022
I think you did. I had one before I bought the topeak. the o rings go bad and the inside wall wears down quickly. the air intake is on the side that would normally be close to the ground meaning it sucks in dirt that breaks the seal.
Source: Did a 5000 mile tour last year.
I also had the park tools frame pump and found it was nearly impossible to use.

I've had really great experience with putting some Effetto Mariposa Caffelatex in my latex tubes and tubulars. Saved me from patching the tubes more than once.

Don't know how well that would work with a tube that already has a puncture. Would probably be messy at least.
>>
>>1070044
if they have a screw on case over the canister you could give it a go, but might need to put something at the bottom of the case to increase the pressure to pierce the the canister.

I had that thing

its the biggest piece of shit I've ever bought off amazon

the tire levers that came with it immediately broke on the first use too

I have one of these micro rockets

takes like 10 minutes to pump up a tire but I rarely get flats so its super tiny size is nice.

fuck man, I'm bad at choosing pumps. I had a Serfas power shit, barely worked, water kept getting in it, and filling tires was a feat in itself since it wouldn't push any kind of volume so I opted for an all metal mini floor pump but looks like I fucked up again.
>>
>>1070229
You just have to keep it clean, and it should work reasonable well. You cave to consider that Mine was bouncing around in my pannier with other tools and old bread all day.
>>
>>1069962
I don't understand why I can't just use a hammer and a big piece of steel

good point, a 5k mile tour is a 5k mile tour. That's a lot on a pump, I ride around 100-200 miles a week, avg 120 miles so I wish I can be as hardcore as doing a 5k tour.

No, this is the best tool. CPR-14 by Ritchey.
>>
>>1070442
As cool as that is, that shape and all the exposed pointy bits make me worry that it would be prone to ripping and tearing holes in a saddlebag.

>>1070439
this is beautiful, is it yours?

If I came across a suitcase full of $1m in unmarked bills, setting up my garage like that, with all the frame prepping tools, would be one of the first things on my list to spend money on.
>>
>>1070439
I love the grease stains around the tools where you grab them.

>>

Really depends on what you're doing.
C02 is better if you value time more than money/are in a hurry.
I like clean, light, manual pumps that dont leave junk behind.

I do repair my bikes and all my friends' bikes just for the sheer pleasure of tinkering in grease. They pay me in beer.

I got kicked out of my apartment for doing this. The landlord thought I was running a business.
