So I got to do a full ILS approach after my checkout flight and I fucking nailed it, granted the instructor took the radios and I just flew the plane. Even got some actual time during it.

Looking forward to starting instrument training

Let's do hangar flying stories/greentext/baconpost

tell about your most butthole puckering incident.

This one time, I was riding as safety pilot for a guy I went to high school with, I was not yet an instructor and my buddy was a freshly minted private pilot (how he passed his checkride boggles the mind).

He had just done a stop-and-go, when on upwind the tower asked us to turn an early right crosswind for traffic. My buddy yanks and banks left... directly into the traffic.

I learned the meaning of multitasking that evening. I simultaneously grasped the control yolk, called "My controls" and ate my own underwear but with my rectum instead of my mouth.

The traffic was a sheriff's helicopter who had just lifted off from their pad, and I'm pretty sure the deputy flying the helicopter could see into our cockpit because he keyed up and says "Hey, You boys be more careful" as if he saw the two of us

After we landed I asked my buddy why he had pulled the whole fighter pilot move with the turn in the wrong direction, his response "well I couldn't see the traffic, so I wanted to turn as fast as I could to avoid him"

We're still friends. He's an engineer for Lockheed Martin now even tho he doesn't know his right from his left.
>>
>>1065228
"Yeah, fucking nailed that ILS!"
>wasn't wearing a hood

Really tho, nice job. Beginners luck is a real thing, so don't let it go to your head yet!
You'll inevitably have to go missed because you pegged a needle at some point, and if you never do it means your instructor isn't making it hard enough!
>>
>>1065231
I tried my hardest to not cheat and just focus on the instruments but yeah haha there was definitely some beginner's luck involved

>>
Glider flyer here.
My highest puckers have come due to a snapped tow rope on take off,

A sudden thunderstorm that leaped up, had to race it to the field with 6 other pilots in pattern.

Cx in Nevada, ridge running, when a private jet, came screaming in over the mountain top. That prompted me to add a solar cell to make sure my transponder battery never runs out again.
>>
>>1065516
>>1065231
Come on now, let the lad be confident, instrument training can be difficult and it helps to have a bit of confidence going into it.
>you ain't seen nothing yet kid, you didn't do this and that, so you got off easy
Not every approach is non-precision single engine partial panel with a full bladder.
>>
>>1065537
>That prompted me to add a solar cell to make sure my transponder battery never runs out again.
I don't know much about aviation, but how does a transponder battery go flat mid-flight? Presumably it gets charged before each flight, and a glider can't stay up for that long.
>>
>>1065588
In the hands of a competent pilot a glider can stay up pretty much indefinitely. It's common for experienced pilots to get a tow after breakfast, eat lunch while flying, and not come back until it's dinner time.
>>
>>1065588
Current record is 1700km in distance in a single flight by a glider.
>>
>>1065588
In a glider, there is no power generation, so everything is powered by battery.

A lot of gliders still have lead acid batteries, which are heavy ( glider pilots hate weight)and not very energy dense. So a lot of gliders only have 1 or 2 motercycle sized batteries.

Until recently you didnt need a transponder in a glider, but it has always been a good idea . See the 2009 carson city incident, where a glider and jet collision happened.

But as a glider pilot you are powering , radio, logger , gps, vario, if your on a long xc flight, it is very possible to ru. Your battery flat.

Many glider pilots are switching to LiFE batteries that are much more energy dense and therefore lighter than a lead battery.

I have friends who fly out of reno/tahoe that will be up for 5-12 hours at a time. The only limit is daylight and their own comfort.

Some crazy sobs fly from reno to vegas,

>I have friends who fly out of reno/tahoe that will be up for 5-12 hours at a time. The only limit is daylight and their own comfort.
Neat.
>>
>>1065669
>Many glider pilots are switching to LiFE batteries that are much more energy dense and therefore lighter than a lead battery.
I'm surprised that's happening so slowly; I would have guessed glider pilots would have been some of the first to jump onto modern batteries. Particularly LiFePO4, but even NiMH would still be a step up from SLA in terms of specific energy.

>But as a glider pilot you are powering , radio, logger , gps, vario, if your on a long xc flight, it is very possible to ru. Your battery flat.
How much power does all that draw?

>That prompted me to add a solar cell to make sure my transponder battery never runs out again.
Could you go into more detail about that?
In particular, how big is the cell, and how well does it work while flying (altitude, attitude, weather, temperature, etc)?

Sorry for being nosey. Aircraft electronics and power is a subject I really know little about.
>>

Assuming that's 12V, that's not very much power.

>>

>>
>>1065720
Saving weight with gliders isn't as big a fuss as you might think. Competitive soaring moved away from endurance a long time ago (since a modern glider in the hands of a skilled pilot can go for as long as the pilot can bear), so nowadays most of the competitions focus on speed, where extra weight and ballast can actually HELP.

There's plenty of ultralights, you just can't do a whole hell of a lot with them other than putt around in a small area.

Of course, if that's your goal, they're extremely easy to get into in the US, as they've got no licensing required, and there's a huge variety of them

I'd love having one of these, personally
>>
>>1065737
Wouldn't there be tons of shit for that on Sporty's?
>>
>>1066144

ASA has like over 1000 questions. Shepard has maybe 300 because they know which ones commonly get asked.

Also with Shepard if you get a question on your test you haven't seen before you get your money back
>>
>>1066155

I forgot to add that you really don't learn anything with Shepard. Its just rote learning to memorize the answers so you pass the test.

You'll need to get the knowledge through another means such as books, a ground school course, or one on one instruction.

After two years of trying, I've finally decided to call it quits on A&P school. I have to face the facts, I'm just not a very good mechanic.

I'm going to give flight school a try though. Even if I didn't do well in A&P school, I still feel like I soaked up enough information to give me a solid base to push off from. Hopefully I'll be better on the operational end of aeronautics than I was at the maintenance end.
>>
>>1070503

That one is more specific to local flights... but I can see how it could be changed to long cross countries, international work... really you just need to think through your flight start to finish and put down everything you even think you'll need.

Also includes a risk assessment on the back, with a place for personal minimums, so that helps too.
>>
>>1070394
You just need to be able to show that you are within limits according to the POH. You don't actually need to fill out a W&B for every flight. If you can prove on the spot by doing it when they ask, that's enough. TC/FAA is only concerned about if you are /actually/ within limits. They don't care whether or not you've filled one out for that specific flight - it isn't required to ever fill one out, just to be able to if asked.
>>
>>1070394
The W in AROW is referring to the W&B in the aircraft's own POH showing that it is valid.

Some FAA guy ramp checking you doesn't give a rat's ass about your W&B. Unless you're doing commercial ops, that's a different story.

It should be easy. It's almost impossible to get lost on the route I'm flying. I'll be flying through a valley almost the entire way which has notable landmarks. The Cardinal is a 4-seater, so its more like an "alternative 182 RG." Its a fine plane, and I really enjoyed flying her (I rented a fixed-gear one). Visibility in turns is MUCH better than most other Cessnas, since the pilot's head is farther forward of the wing's leading edge. Doors are wide like a Caravan. Less draggy, too...you throttle back, and it stays at the same speed for a few seconds. That all-moving elevator makes a huge difference...flaring is done with just a tiny tug on the yoke, else tail goes crunch. I'm pretty sure that's the main reason for its lack of popularity.... some pilots instantly hated it just because they were expecting Skyhawk feel.

Lots of people fly old aircraft. They go under frequent inspections, so it isn't the age that matters but rather the condition. That being said the airframe inspections should performed with care to ensure metal fatigue isn't setting in. Aircraft components are subjected to temperature change, flexing, vibrations, and other forces/stresses that weaken the metal over time, so with older aircraft the mechanic has to be mindful of this and keep a watchful eye for the symptoms of fatigue.

Also the aircraft you chose is an A-29 Super Tucano, or the Embraer-314.

>>1072630
If you intend to receive instruction through a school (part 141) you'll use their aircraft. If you want freelance instruction (part 61) you can use whatever plane you'd like so long as it meets the requirements of the rating you are pursuing (private, instrument, commercial, multi, etc). You'll pay the operating costs of the aircraft obviously, and the instructor rate in addition.

It should be. Majors are going to have a bunch of people retiring for the next decade about.
>>
>>1072736
Last year when I was a junior at Ohio University (aviation major), i was in a class where we had people in the aviation industry come in and talk to us. We had one of the Vice Presidents of PSA come in one evening.

At one point he asked who was a CFI and how many hours they had. My one roommate who was a senior was a CFI with 750ish hours at the time. When the VP heard that he immediately walked over to my roommate and handed him his business card.

The regionals are hiring like crazy right now. That's why there are all of these benefits and bonuses, because they need people so badly they'll pay them three times the amount they were being paid 4 years ago.
>>
>>1073513
"Hey, no one wants to fly for us. We can't figure it out."

"Did you try paying them more than a cashier at Big Lots?"

"What? Our CEO is due a bonus! How dare you."
>>
>>1073535

It's a funny thing, the last year or so my school (UCMO) has been hurting for instructors. So much so that they're offering people who're finishing up their commercial ratings an at-cost CFI track, and a reduced I-I this summer.

Thing is they haven't raised instructor pay...

We're probably going to see an instructor shortage eventually.
>>
I'm interested in learning to fly, but I don't know anything about where to begin. Any advice? Is there any pastebin of links or something for newbies to read through to get the jist of how to start in aviation?
>>
>>1073512

If Envoy or PSA hires me I'll be sooo fucking happy. From the research I've done, they are the only 2 regionals with a guaranteed path directly to the majors without having to re-apply and interview.

Find a flight school/fixed base operator at your local airport.

Call them and set up a meeting with a flight instructor. It can include an intro flight as well.

Usually the instructor can help you from there. There are a number of options so I (and most people) suggest shopping around and finding a school and instructor you're comfortable with.

What's your general area, as in City and State? I could find a few airports you might not know about there.
>>
>>1073061

>>
>>1073594
Well, right now I'm near Knoxville TN, but my life is in a bit of flux, and I'm trying to move up to the Seattle WA area.
>>
>>1073686
Well Knoxville it looks like you have:

>Rockwood (RKW)
>Monroe (MNV)
>McGhee Tyson (TYS)
>Knoxville Downtown (DKX)
>Gatlinburg (GKT)

Just look up "(three letter code) airport", click on the link from AirNav.com, then scroll down to a section called "FBO, Fuel Providers, and Aircraft Ground Support." That lists out all the FBOs and the services they provide.

That works the best for just preliminary information. If you're not too sure about that info on there, there's a phone number for the airport itself and just ask for contact info for flight schools or instructors.

Or you can just google "flight schools near _______". Just make phone calls, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Any military pilots here?

How realistic is it for someone to become a pilot after completing OCS with a meme degree rather than an academy or ROTC? Is it even possible or is it more like 1 out of 1000?

First choice would be naval aviation but would gladly go Air Force as well.
>>
First Solo XC in 12 hours.. I know I'm fully capable to do it as I've had no problem with the last XC we did. This is a easy route too, which we have flown once before. Plus I'm familiar with the area in general. But even still... I'm feeling anxious

Do any of you ever feel a bit of anxiety when you fly solo or when you do your "firsts"?
>>

>>
>>1073757
Sure, its completely normal. The key is getting over it to accomplish the flight without letting it hinder your performance. You'll find that once you step in the aircraft by yourself the whole feeling changes, and it becomes a lot more fun. Have a good flight, you'll do fine.
>>
>>1073581

So I busted my instrument checkride a few months ago, but due to an issue with IACRA, the DPE had to fill out a manual 8710. After the flight, she told me she "might forget to mail it off to Oklahoma", heavily implying that she wasn't going to report my failure to the FAA (she was retiring in a few weeks anyway). Is there any way for me to check if that failure is on my record? Would the IACRA website show it?
>>
>>1073688

The nice thing about the navy is that it's performance based. With a degree you will put in a package for OCS which will consist of your ASTB scores, GPA, motivational statement, and letters of rec. If you meet the requirements for the selection board that time around you will get picked up. From there it's just doing well in Primary and the needs of the Navy as far as platform goes.

tl;dr I got a business degree and I'm flying rhinos now. Don't go to VFA-211 they have a lot of class alphas.

>>
>>1073945

I think VOR's are an interesting concept.

>riddle babies

Do they really not use VORs at all? Through my flight school, we have the GPS running in the background to measure distance (since aircraft isn't equipped with DME) but we use VORs a lot. After I get my private, I'll be going to ATP Flight School. Which.. I have to get a iPad and foreflight
>>
>>1073965
I've heard some outrageous stories about riddle babies, not knowing how to use VOR's, flying as poorly as AirFrance F/O when they get put in a plane with steam gauges. Shameful to be honest...
>>
>>1073945
Fuck you

t. ERAU flight student

>>1073965
We use VORs just as much as everyone else. We do use GPS to obtain a DME, which is very accurate. Often when I do an approach using autopilot I will program in a GPS overlay because the autopilot functions smoother based upon a GPS signal as opposed to a VOR signal, which will sometimes cause the aircraft to snake back and forth chasing a needle (it's a bit funky). Fore flight is a fantastic aid, especially for instrument. No dicking around with the TPPs and folding charts.

>>1073970
>I've heard
Why don't you quit spreading rumors like a damn child. I've never understood why people shit all over ERAU and similar flight programs; they are pretty comprehensive, and with the classes students take in addition to the flight training the students learn above and beyond the typical required knowledge areas. In addition, for each flight course you also have 2 check oral activities and 2 checkrides, one for the university and one for the FAA. So you either know your shit or you burn a lot of money failing.

I'm curious. Why did you choose Riddle? Isn't the flight program like $130,000? Don't you only have about 250TT after 4 years?

I'll be going to ATP Flight School with credit for private. I'll spend $60,000 but I'll be done in 6 months and have a time building jobs as a CFI guarenteed. Typical path to regionals is 2 years
>>
>>1074000
Part 141 flight training is expensive anywhere you go, but yeah it is pricey. I get all the way through commercial multi w/ instrument by the time I'm finished (just one more checkride and I'll be done...). They are short instructors though, so they are offering select students an accelerated CFI course paid for by the university with a two year contract, and they'll pay for any additional classes you take. Instructors will reach their reduced ATP mins in something like eight months, it's crazy. They got something like 12 or 13 students per instructor at the moment.
>>

So, funniest and most annoying story about pilots?

>>1074747
>>1074749

I'm just wondering what the airwaves would sound like if we just let loose...

>"Ey, KC approach ya overshot our localizer you assholes, Muleflight 454"
>"Muleflight 454 turn the fuck around and find it again you know where the fuck you are."
>"Give us a fucking clearance first"

>"It's MULEflight Chicago. MULE as in ASS."
(this one was closest to happenning one night)

>"St. Louis departure, Muleflight 464, could ya give us our fucking clearance yet?"
>"Cessna 464CM [insert clearance here]"
>"Goddamnit Departure it's MULEFIGHT 4. 6. 4. but here's the clearance, [clearance]"
>"CESSNA 464CM im gonna call you what I'm gonna call you goddamnit unless you give me your 3 letter identifier, readback correct."
>"Fuck if I know what it is, this if the first time I've been asked for it. You work with us enough you should fucking know."

^Based on true stories
>>
>>1074752
it would be absolute chaos. shouting matches over the frequency and misunderstood clearances. we depend so heavily on having standard phraseology so we can just pick out the important stuff and not listen to every word. ill be talking to the guy next to me during a readback and be able to tell if it was a bad readback

Nailed a landing in a Dakota today.

Anybody here ever work as a lineman at an FBO before?

I just handed in my resume today and the manager gave me an impromptu interview as well. He told me to come back at 10am tomorrow for a formal interview but called me an hour after I left and asked if I was free to stay until 6pm. He also told me to bring my social security card and said my classes won't be a problem so I'm guessing things are looking good.

What does the job entail? What can expect? Is it fun or just dull and stressful?

About the airport itself; 300 daily aircraft operations daily involving scheduled commercial, corporate jet, military, and of course general aviation.

Wel I just had a relatively shitty fucking flight... Working on Commercial Maneuvers and I've done worse but this one was up there. Just felt off the whole time even when I was told I got it dead on.

Picrelated was the sight walking back to the hanger

>>1077591

Lucky Fucker... I've had nearly every place within 30 minutes turn me down for Line work... One that said I had the job but never called me back to set up the drug test (and I KNOW my background is clean)

But it mostly entails pushing airplanes around, fueling and defueling (prepare to taste 100LL or JET-A), general cleaning chores, things of that nature. There will be times were you're busy and there will be times where you're just fucking around because you have nothing better to do
>>
>>1077604

Are commercial maneuvers difficult?
>>
>>1077604
Some days you just can't win my dude, we all have them. Don't let it discourage you. Review the maneuvers in your head, examine what you did incorrectly, and determine the proper corrective action would be for your next flight. Success or failure, it's still valuable experience and good practice.
>>
>>1077591
I work as a line service tech for a well known fbo chain.
The staff and management at my fbo are a tight knit bunch of top notch individuals, and it is by far the best job I've ever had. The team is going to set the tone for your fbo. The fueling, hangar stacking, truck/farm maintenance, chores are actually pretty fun, And the only thing I really don't like is doing lav service... but I convinced my boss to get me and the other guys a really nice face shield in addition to the gown and rubber gloves, So even that isn't bad

Anyways... If you love working with highly trained professionals to get a job done correctly, like putting a smile on strangers faces, enjoy being responsible for things like multi million dollar jets and flammable liquids, like to creatively solve logistics problems, and are a good conversationalist, you'll do very well.

If you like being told what needs to be done, are inflexible about working alone or in a group, are nervous about being responsible for moving heavy expensive things, would be nervous talking to celebrities and billionaires, and like knowing what you're going to do that day, the job isn't for you.

On Memorial day I didn't do one single operational task other than my daily inspections because there were no aircraft movements or guests in the FBO. I studied for 7 hours and was paid for it.

Today i put 15,000 steps on my step counter, made $190 in tips, and didn't sit down for more than 5 minutes to eat and check on the status of some incoming flights. Both days were a lot of fun.

Also I know a bunch of people who would happily hire me when I get my commercial multi, so that's nice too.

I worked as a lineman for a year.

Was for a private FBO, and got about 10 or 20 departures/arrivals per shift (The airport getting about 210 operations a day). Mostly private jets and planes, some military, Civil Air Patrol, etc.

Most of the time spent de-bugging, moving, and fueling planes. Otherwise the rest of the time would be spent receiving and preparing planes for departure or cleaning the hangers. Every morning there would be a fuel quality check, and every night the fuel trucks would be quality checked.

On rare occasions I would have to stay very late to receive an after hours arrival (usually just so I could pull their plane in the hanger during inclement weather), but usually you would just get their cars and necessities left out for them.

It's a litter unnerving at first, but you get used to it. The only time I was really stressed was when there was a large shift in employees and I was left alone to handle the base by myself and move a lot planes.

We had to detail high paying clients cars if they requested it, I'm not sure if this is common or not.

By far my favorite job that I've had so far.

>>1077650

Some times the people coming in or going out drop you a 10 or 20. Nothing really to it, just split it with who-ever you're working with that day.
>>
>>1077650
Smile, be eager to help without being annoying or awkward, say "hello, good evening!" "Have a good flight, we'll see you next time!" And "If you like I'll bring your car plane-side while you get situated" and that kind of thing.

You are the first face they will see after they land, and the last face they will see when they leave. YOU set the tone for their trip. Not the CSR, not the manager, YOU. If you make them feel good about the trip and do a good job schlepping bags, they'll THROW money at you.

And don't stand around waiting for the tip. Stay busy, and when they're ready to palm you a twenty they'll call you over.

Also, don't sound like a dumb red neck even if you are one (Like me)
When they thank you say "My pleasure" instead of "No problem"

And for god sake be flexible and use common sense. If you see a family with young kids who are scared of loud noises, find them some ear plugs, or offer to put some cartoons on in the FBO to keep them occupied while daddy is preflighting.. If you see something the pilot missed, tell him privately, not in front of his passengers and the rest of the FBO. Don't hand out copies of your mix tape. Don't say "I'm a pilot too!" To everyone who comes through. Listen more than you talk. Don't let pilots pull their own chocks. Be ready to do CSR things like arrange rental cars and hotel rooms... just be sharp and "get it"

You're not dealing with the general public. You're dealing with professional pilots, wealthy owners, and adventurous pleasure seekers. Act like it.

Newly hired lineman from >>1077591 here

I fucking love my job. My only regret is not finding it sooner.

Apparently we must be a decent FBO because half the stuff you guys said is covered by our line hostesses, which are basically just qt girls rotating from front desk work. Anyway, in the 3 days I've worked so far I've met the governer of my state, several pro athletes, executives, mega mega rich people, and a bunch of other cool characters. I got a lift in a secret service van and took a Porsche GT3 for a spin around the tarmac.

At first I was like "holy shit this is complicated as fuck" regarding refueling but on the second day I was doing everything alone. My trainer was just like "here's the airbrake, here's the on button, here's the nozzle, and here's where you stick it. Good luck." We have a large flight school next door so we're usually busy with refueling but there's always 3-5 other young guys like me on shift so I'm never stuck just refueling. I'll never have to do lav work or washing either because apparently our foreman likes to do it and won't "let us mess up stuff." The 2pm-10pm shifts are the best. All the bosses leave at 4pm and traffic completely dies down after 5pm if the day wasn't sunny. All us linemen raced golf cars, went off roading, played hide and go seek, and a bunch of other crazy shit. If I ever have class work to do I just ask for a dead shift and they'll set me in the line office and leave me be. And I get paid for it

Oh and Bubba Watson gave me a $100 tip today. My second highlight of the day was playing with a G650ER.

It's been rainy every day I've worked so far so I'm looking forward to a sunny day with real work. According to the other linemen we usually rack up a good amount on tips during busy days. This is the first job I've had where I can't wait to get to work.
