The first locomotive that we can definitely say did 100 mph. Everything before (and even Scotsman to some extent) has a degree of doubt. Its fame is probably more due to appearing at the Wembly Empire Exhibition in 1924 however.

I'd have more respect if it was a new build. Tornado is a feat of planning and engineering. The entire sorry sad tale of Flying Scotsman is just embarrassing.

Flying Scotsman is a nearly 100-year-old service vehicle that has been;
1. Operated to the ragged edge for most of its service life
2. Poorly maintained for the second half of service.
3. Rebuilt early on from an A1 to an A3, if I remember correctly
4. Restored at least twice
5. Subject to regulations that effectively list more than half of the engine as 'wear items' that need replacement faster than it can recuperate money.

Bloody thing has been through the wringer.

only about 1/3 of A3s were built as such from the start. The rest were rebuilt A1s.
