They should be retrofitted to be Tier 4 compliant.

bump
Redpill me on the RDC.
My local commuter line used to have a set, but I don't know much about the pros/cons.

RDCs came online in 1949 and ended 1952. They were supposed to serve branch lines but with people buying cars they took a hit. Some were in commuter service later on.

>RDCs came online in 1949 and ended 1952.
They lasted longer than that, depending on the railroad.
>For several railroads the RDCs, because of their low overall cost and operational flexibility, were the last passenger trains in operation. Examples include the Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range Railway,[30] the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway,[31] the Lehigh Valley Railroad,[32] and the Northwestern Pacific Railroad, where RDC service survived until the formation of Amtrak in 1971.[33]

Ugly as sin.
I recall watching them daily out of Calgary, Alberta to Edmonton back in 1984 until the run was cancelled in 1985 by VIA Rail. Very sad.
Is VIA Rail still running any anywhere? Last one I heard was in British Columbia but the run was indefinitely suspended since March 2011.
Not my pic but it does bring back memories. They'd hit 90 mph north of Calgary. It was something else passing all the speeders and truckers paralleling on Hwy #2.
Not related but it's a railcar anyway
These are the first DMUs aquired by Indonesian Railroad in 1963,They work on regional services and pulled by diesel locomotives during it's last years before retiring in 1984
In Dallas, RDCs were formerly used for the commuter line to Fort Worth, before being partially then eventually entirely phased out in favor of bilevel coaches and locomotives acquired secondhand from Toronto. A couple of them were used a few years later by the nearby DCTA line until their GTWs came in. Now DART is planning on selling 12 out of 13 of them to a passenger line startup in Vermont.
also Canada's attempt
