What are some good chains to look for in order to lock up my medium budget bike?
I was thinking something about 11-13mm thick.
Already have a good padlock for it (PL 342), only need the chain.
you should use a ulock instead of a chain+padlock.
kyptonite evolution mini-7 for budget, or kyptonite forgetaboutit new york lock for $$$

Chains are racist and oppressive.

You have a budget bike, and a 170$ padlock? Mmkay
Depends what it's for. If you're just ducking into the store for 5 minutes, and there are cameras everywhere, a small kryptonite cable lock is probably fine. Enough to deter opportunistic theft, and the odds of a professional repeat bike thief hitting the front of say, Fairway on Broadway on the Upper West Side are relatively low. Take your lights and pannier with you of course.
For longer periods you really need pitlock style skewers and fasteners, and something like a NY noose. I don't recommend doing this with a bike where your total replacement cost exceeds $1k.

Nothing wrong with that, a quality padlock will outlive many bicycles.
