I've been doing it for 3 years now. It's alright, but you don't have much of a social life. Even when you're off, you're not really off if you work on an extraboard.

I applied online and interviewed. I had some college education, so I guess that helped.
As far as railroads not hiring, freight has been down a bit these last few years. Companies also hired a lot of employees and then furloughed almost as many. As such, there's not really a big demand.
