Does anybody else really like depressing sort of train stations? I can't really explain it, but I'd rather go to a depressing train station than a futuristic utopian one.
I agree in general, but with two caveats.
1) It better not smell like piss.
2) I better not feel like I'm about to get stabbed.

Do what she says...
>accidentally knock her wallet off her desk while helping her mom clean her room
>it folds open and tucked behind it is a ragged piece of paper
>unfold it and see that it was the card I drew for her years ago
>her mom sees it too and says I was all she talked about by the hospital bed
>I wasn't supposed to find out

>keep crying for several days after that and get depressed because of how I treated her.
I'm so fucking sorry Chelsea... I'll never forget you. I can never move on.

You've basically described the majority of the subway stations here in NY
There is definitely an at peace feeling. Like Higashi Narita - stolen from wikipedia
Judging by the dust marks near the vents, it seems they run the aircon in summer despite the relative lack of traffic anyway. I can't imagine how much that would cost
But then there's genuinely depressing and uncomfortable - like remote places in Hokkaido or Newcastle station which was closed because a mayor bribed the state government so he could throw up some apartment blocks

I found the train station of Koidula, Estonia to be utterly depressing.
Koidula lies right next to the Russian border. The major Russian town of Pechory is close by but there are no cross-country passenger trains serving the region. So what's left is very infrequent passenger service to Tartu, Estonia's second-largest city. There are two trains at most on any given day.
I was the only person there, and that's no surprise: Koidula, the village the station got its name from, has a whopping 1 (one) inhabitant. Other villages nearby sport between 20 and 50 people. The nearest settlement with more than one thousand inhabitants is Räpina, about 22 miles from Koidula.
It's an incredibly remote, depressing place.

Why is there even a train station there? Railway lines over here get scrubbed for much smaller reasons than that. My city of 330 000 has one railway connecting it to another city of 160 000 just ~50 km away, serving a few towns and villages on the way. That line used to be abandoned for almost 20 years. Another line connects it to another city of 300 000 or so. Deutsche Bahn had plans to abandon that one as well, but thankfully that was averted by local politics.

There's hundreds of stations and train stops in my country which have no personnel at all. Pic related is one example. It's slightly unusual because it's one one of the most-used railway lines in all of Germany, connecting the Rhein-Ruhr area with Hannover and then Berlin. I've never seen any staff there.

imo the most depressing pic in this thread
I used to catch the train from Chatswood station in Sydney while the whole station was being demolished and rebuilt for the Epping - Chatswood link. That was a very miserable two years.
I once caught the wrong train and had to change here. Even though it's the next station out from the city centre and it was about 6pm the station was deserted apart from a goods train in one of the sidings. Weirdly comfy but also a bit unsettling especially as this was December so it was pitch dark outside and there was an alarm going off in the distance as well as quite a bit of smoke. Apart from that waiting booth the station's been pretty much untouched since the 1970s
This one is pretty grim...

The reason for it was that Estonia didn't have a proper border station in the south with Russia.
It was built in 2011 if I recall correctly and back then we had quite a good trade relationship with Russia so we needed a modern facility in addition to the north. But because now the relationship between Russia and the EU is sour, our freight transport is suffering.
Also another reason for it was the fact that it connects to railways together (Tartu - Petseri and Valga - Petseri). Before the station the railways connected up in the town of Petseri (which at the time when those railroads were built belonged to Estonia), so when we regained independence we had a problem that the railroads connected up in Russia and with the station built, the problem was solved.

The years when Lehrter Bahnhof in Berlin was called Berlin Hauptbahnhof were depressing. At least they added the name to the platform signs.
>>1054419
y tho?
was this because of berlin wall?
>>1054436
Eh, it's a little more complicated than that. In the era when the first railway lines were built in Germany, several individual railways were built radiating outwards from Berlin. There was no central train station to which they all connected. Instead, there were several train stations named after the destinations of the trains that started from there. For example, there was the Dresdner Bahnhof with trains going to Dresden; the Hamburger Bahnhof with trains to Hamburg; and the Lehrter Bahnhof with trains to Lehrte and Hannover. Over time, the railway network of Berlin became more connected and there were trains coming through from all directions. The former terminus stations turned into through stations and their names became irrelevant. Lehrter Bahnhof was replaced by the S-Bahn station Lehrter Stadtbahnhof after WWII.
Then the city was split between GDR and FRG for a few decades; Ostbahnhof was called Hauptbahnhof for 11 years, including the reunification and then they finally decided to build a central station for the whole city.
It was supposed to be built at the site of Lehrter Bahnhof/Lehrter Stadtbahnhof and they had a public vote in which over 70% of citizens voted to call it Lehrter Bahnhof. Deutsche Bahn still named it Berlin Hauptbahnhof - Lehrter Bahnhof and later on, just Berlin Hauptbahnhof to eliminate confusion (which was moot at this point anyway).
To this day, a few of the S-Bahn platforms carry the name Lehrter Bahnhof in small print, but the official name of the station is Berlin Hauptbahnhof. Which is depressing to many Berliners and to people like me, who like the idea of having some meaning attached to the name Lehrte in the general population.
>>1054436
>>1054454
Cont
Lehrte is a shitty town in Lower Saxony with a population of 44 000 people. It used to be a tiny hamlet until the construction of the railway, so it is a true railroad town. My paternal family stems from there, I lived in one of the outlying villages for a few years of my childhood, I picked up my grandpa from Lehrte to have dinner with the whole family every weekend later on, and I'm gonna be buried in Lehrte when I am dead. Thus the thought of Lehrter Bahnhof being called Berlin Hauptbahnhof is utterly depressing to me.

Stranraer: Run down even before the ferries stopped, the station had a half-arsed rebuild in the early '80s, which has resulted in the architectural clash of Victorian wooden station building and '80s polytunnel. There's both pigeon and human shit on the line, due to the fact that the Super Sprinter trains that call here don't have retention toilets, so just dump their contents into the four foot. The station's location at the end of a pier just adds to the run-down-ness, as its exposed to the weather and no-one passes through the station unless they're catching a train, which are very infrequent with at least an hour (and sometimes up to three) between services.
The actual railway up to Girvan is stunning, though.

Great thread! Love depressing train stations
Brussel-Kongres might be the most depressing one I've ever seen. It's located in the extremely busy North-South tunnel throught Brussels but it's barely used has been and neglected for years so it's basicly 2 dark empty platforms between 6 tracks with trains passing every minute but stopping like twice a day. There is no station furniture, no maps, barely any light. The first time I saw it from a train window I was 100% convinced it was a ghost station. The last time I was in belgium they were talking about closing it but I believe they are actually trying to advertise it as an alternative for the Brussels Central station now.

You know whats really depressing about St Paul's Union Depot, despite the fact it was restored to its former glory and is overall a hell of a lot better than the old midway station. No one uses it.
At its height SPUD had around 280 train movements a day, now we just have 2 and with a small chance of those being cut next year. For gods sake your more likely to find a small group of people playing ping pong than actually waiting for a train. Doesn't help the fact that the only new proposed rail line that is probably going to happen (sorry ZIP rail) is planned to go to target field station which in all honestly, doesn't feel like a proper station for some reason.
