2nd hand TT bike. 10spd Red + Stages. Boyd disk + 90mm

Bought everything but wheels/power meter for sub $400 and have been killing local TTs on it, 2nd at states last year and plenty of short TT stage wins.

Yeah its good. This is just the basic bitch one Claris I got mainly to commute with etc, but Ive been using it in lieu of my other bike a lot.

Quite heavy, but super comfy. Other than that it just rides like any other entry level road bike, I'm sure the quality will go up if you spend a bit more on the higher end models. Not had chance to test it off road yet, but the roads in Scotland are basically gravel tracks anyway.

2014 Trek 820

My goal is to do ALL of the New River Trail here in VA in one go this summer. Also to bike up and down the Virginia Creeper.

Used to use her as a commuter bike when I was in the Marines. Barracks was about 2 miles from the hanger so I didn't want to walk but it was also a waste to drive.

Bought it from someone on a swap meet group with no wheels and a rival crankset. Team loaned me wheels and I had a red crank + stages from a past build to slap on for power data.

You can see there are zip ties/duct tape on the frame. Past owner destroyed internal routing for RD so it's run full length outside frame and taped up for max aero. Thanks man!

>>1050031
yeah! Big weekend with all the collegiate stuff going on. Put down the 5th fastest time of the day at 15:55. Broke + lost my garmin on the last lap of the road race, the back portion with all the chip seal was so shit.

I already have a road bike, and I wanted another bike that was a bit more of an all-rounder

>want to be able to offroad with it (i have 30s on it from the shop but i think you can put 32 on them) so it's capable
>want to be able to use it for solo touring (it has rack mounts) so should also be capable to do some light baggage touring

I didn't really look at the roubaix, to be honest. I was looking at the diverge, cannondale caadx and the trek 520

I'm not into mountain bike so i'm curious. What is going on with this huge cassette and this tiny ass chain ring ?

I mean you can't pedal in a step descent with that ratio and i don't see how the 40ish cog rear / 20ish cog front ratio can be usefull. A 1:1 ratio is already sufficient for pretty step climbs, so yeah 2:1 would theoretically allows you to do even stepper climbs but you'll probably go slowert than what is confortable. Am i plain wrong ?
>>
>>1051478
I'm not a mountain biker, but this is my understanding:

A lot of the climbs you'll do on an MTB are steeper than what road bikes usually see, and to compound the issue, you can't simply stand for the steep stuff because you'll lose traction on a lose surface.

As for pedalling down steep descents, I don't think anyone aside from downhillers care about that. But the focus is usually more on technical skill than pure straight line speed.
>>
>>1051473
They still collide because the stem is low
>>
>>1051478
It's 30:42, not ridiculously low and still has some use for the sort of climbs you'd see off road.

why do people live in cold places
>>
>>1051479
>>1051478
>steeper than what road bikes usually see
this, and also riding on loose ground uphill takes a lot more energy than pavement since most of your power is lost in throwing dirt and gravel up off the ground

even a moderate climb over rough ground feels much steeper than a road climb, so you need crazy low gearing

>real advantage/disadvantage of using slicks over knobby tires in gravel and dirt roads?
Knobby tires offer more grip on loose or uneven surfaces, so you can brake, corner, and accelerate a bit faster on gravel with them, the trade-off is an increase in rolling resistance. For riding gravel roads, the optimal tire for racing or a ride that won't include any significant amounts of pavement is one with small, closely spaced knobs or tread (something like the tire on the left in this picture, compare with the XC mtb tire on the right which is itself pretty tame for a mtb tire) which give a little extra grip but don't noticeably increase rolling resistance - but if you're not looking for every seconds advantage in a race, wide slicks are perfectly fine for gravel riding and have the advantage of rolling faster on pavement.
>>
>>1052573
Knobs are only useful on soft mud, they don't help on gravel (all they do is fling the stones up) and perform worse than slicks on harder surfaces.

>Knobs are only useful on soft mud

I expect to see all MTBs that are ridden in dry conditions to convert to Compass's Enduro Allroad tires within the year! /s

How does Jan's jizz taste, anon?

Slick tires can do pretty well off road. I've actually been *most* impressed with them on slightly damp, slightly sticky "hero dirt". They also do well on gravel that's on top of soft-ish dirt.

They're not bad on deep gravel roads, like you find through farmland in the Midwest. But the round profile tends to dig into the deep stuff like a ship's bow, which causes them to not track straight very well, and they're prone to washing out in turns. I prefer tires with a squarer profile and side knobs for deep gravel.

The slick Compass tires are 100% hopeless in dry, dusty "loose over hard packed" conditions like you see out in the desert or SoCal. Absolutely useless on slickrock or steep fire road descents. I actually had to get stitches in my arm when I washed out at only moderate speed on a fire road - on a turn that I would have railed effortlessly on a Maxxis Ikon, WTB Nano, or BG R&R.

Jan's tires are ideal for the kind of stuff he likes riding: a thin layer of gravel over damp soil; very common in the PNW or Japan. Their off-road performance gets worse the further you stray from that kind of surface. If I'm doing a ride that's mostly off-road, I really prefer something like a Nano40C or Rock&Road. That said, if you're doing mixed-surface rides that are >50% on pavement and don't involve mud, Compass slicks are hard to beat.
>>
>>1052647
>I expect to see all MTBs that are ridden in dry conditions to convert to Compass's Enduro Allroad tires within the year!
Why are you implying that I was implying that? Most mountain bikes are ridden on mud so of course knobbies make sense for them.

All I was saying is knobs don't help for loose surfaces like gravel, having the knobs grip onto something that provides no traction isn't a good thing. Now, if the gravel road is actually dirt with some stones on it then knobs can help if they can bite through the stones and grip the underlying dirt. As for just plain dirt roads, if the dirt isn't softer then the rubber then the knobs do nothing, if it's softer then they help.

not the first anon, but you said
>Knobs are only useful on soft mud
and that is complete bullshit

Even on perfectly dry dirt or gravel, if you're going fast downhill, it's much easier to lose the bike underneath you on a turn with round, slick tires than with knobbies. Ride up a steep dirt trail with slicks and you'll spin your wheels much sooner with slicks than knobbies. Brake hard going downhill and you'll skid farther on slicks than you will with knobbies.
>>
>>1052659
>Even on perfectly dry dirt or gravel, if you're going fast downhill, it's much easier to lose the bike underneath you on a turn with round, slick tires than with knobbies.
If it's actual gravel, completely loose and not just a thin layer on top of mud, then it would make no difference. With either type of tyre you're just going to be rolling across the stones. If the dirt isn't soft enough for the knobs to dig in then they're not helping, in fact they'll grip less as there's less surface area. If the dirt is particularly hard and there's also significant dust on top then a tread pattern can help compared to a completely slick tyre, but you also don't need large knobs.

Haha, rad. Those were On One Mary bars - pretty unique when I built the bike in 2007, but I've seen some other bars like them lately. Soma Clarence, Origin 8 Space Off Road...

>>1052417 is a real old photo though, it's a dropbar 650B converted mongrel nowadays.

That's ridiculously rad; I missed that it was a fatbike frame.

Well, I whacked it with a mallet for a good 20 mintues. Sum total of my efforts was some tinnitus and I think I fucked up the bottom bracket. The crank still rubs up on the frame, if not as much. It refuses to bend back further.
>>
>>1052816
>whacked it with a mallet for 20 minutes
I'm impressed you kept up a futile effort for so long...

Hitting the crank with anything is the least effective way to straighten it back out - what you should do instead is remove the pedal, then slide a length of steel pipe over the end of the crank arm, use the leverage that gives you to pull the crank arm back into alignment.

This looks like a perfect sleeper to me - at first glance it looks like a crummy bike with mismatched parts, but there's nothing there that would actually hold you back from going fast (except maybe the lack of foot retention), plus that saddle-to-bar drop says that this bike belongs to a rider with some strength.

And because it's fun to look at, here's the 'before' pic of the same bike as it was given to me about two years ago. It came to me without pedals, saddle, brake levers, and tires - this is how I temporarily set it up to make it rideable and see if it was worth salvaging this frame with a big ugly dent in the top tube (rolled the dent out with frame blocks before getting it powdercoated). Note that between the two pics, only the wheels, saddle, shifters, and consumables are different, the rest of the components are exactly the same parts.

Interesting that you'd go through the effort for that photo but not clean the bike. It would sort of make sense if it was a really nice bike (not saying it's shit or anything) to show that it actually gets used.

Quite a nice bike though, would be better with a newer double crankset and a wider range cassette if you needed the range. Also some larger and nicer looking rotors.
>>
>>1053395
>>1053475
>>1053476
Because it's a turd, and you know it. But you're putting on aires about "restoring it" when all you've done is slap some lipstick on that pig.

Also, that fucking cabling job. That fucking front derailleur. Why both with the trouble of (shittily) converting a single speed frame to derailleurs when there are plenty of cheap OTS out there?
>>
>>1053395
good luck getting $75 for that
>>
>>1053523
>larger rotors
>better
>>
>>1053537
They look and perform better. The only reasons to use smaller rotors are weight (minor), clearance (most frames and forks can fit at least 180), the frame or fork not being rated for a larger disc, and price (also minor with one piece rotors, a little bit greater for two piece or floating rotors). I suppose technically a larger rotor would warp more from heat but they also don't heat up as much, so I can't say for sure which is better in that regard.

You can never have 'too good' braking. Unless you are a 120lb manlet that rides exclusively on a rail trail, 180F/160R is the minimum of what you should use on an XC/trail bike, assuming you actually put effort into your riding. My 'all mountain' hardtail has 203F/180R, and I use it for everything off-road. Most of the time the 203 is overkill, but when I'm screaming down a 45° slope at 40mph, I like to be able to stop my 185lbs in a hurry without needing to white-knuckle my brake levers.
>>
>>1053983
>rail-trails
>45° scree slopes

nothing in between huh?
>>
>>1053985
Don't be under equipped is my point, that's why I said 180/160. I use 203/180 for my bike but I even said that's overkill for most. Don't be dense.
>>
>>1053983
>You can never have 'too good' braking.
So much this. I'm the guy he was replying to, I run 203 front and rear. I could get by with 180 (I'm only 150lbs) and maybe even 160 on the rear but I'll take more leverage and less heat build up if I can get it.
>>
>>1053983
Owner of the Stumpjumper here.

I've never had a problem with the 160 that is on there stopping my 160lbs on anything that I ride on. I understand that a bigger rotor could be better but I just don't ride crazy shit which is why I have a XC bike and not a trail or DH bike. I really only use this bike to keep my cardio up in the winter when I prefer not to ride my road bikes.

Bruh. Got mine for £8.50 (just under €10) from Decathlon. I like them, even though this site says Ultra Sports are better (tiny bit more expensive) I don't trust Conti shit and have good experiences with Michelin. Also I think fully slick and plain white text looks better.
