Somewhere on the other side of the globe, we are melting Edition.

Post your rides, post photos of riding, tell us about the ride. Even trainer rides are allowed!

I'll start off with a cautionary tale. I've always ridden with just one spare tube (aside from all day affairs) with the reasoning that if I had more flats then I'd just patch them as I went.

What this did not anticipate was a grass patch FULL of fucking goatheads, which ruined both of my tubes utterly and completely.

So yeah always carry two spares folks.

Nice weather above -10 °C since Friday so I got out to ride the fat bike instead of running. Which is good because my 6th day in a row of running left me a mildly sprained ankle. Fortunately the ankle doesn't bother me riding. Been dealing with a sick cat since Wednesday. She's reluctant to eat, and would rather just follow me around, so I have to watch her while she eats. She had a bad tooth that got infected, and was good after coming back from the vet until yesterday, the day after her pain medication ran out when she stopped eating again. Took far too much effort to make her eat this afternoon.

I ghost-rode a bike over to a bike gear swap event and sold it.

It was easier than expected, but a bit freaky taking a left at a light from a downhill street.

I rode a MUP most of the way, lots of looks from joggers.

Got too warm today and the roads were sloppy and wet. So I went for a little under 2 hours at 7 pm once things started solidifying. Windy but not bad. Did a lot of alley riding where the snow was still snow. My 4.8" studded tires love chewing into frozen slush, it makes the most amazing crunching sound.

Its surprising how hard it is to see pedestrians in the dark no matter what color they are wearing. Reflective accents really should be incorporated into all jackets. My headlight reflects off garbage bins 2 blocks away, but barely illuminate peds 20 feet in front of me.

Nice evening fat bike ride, about 38 km. Temp dropped quickly from about +2 °C to -4 when the sun went down but leveled off. Did a group ride, so I pumped my tires up for the ride over, let air out for the trail ride, then put some back in for the ride home. Put a light on my helmet in addition to my handle bars. A huge help when cornering on unlit paths. Since I've had two lights for years I should have started using both years ago.

I few above freezing days ahead, so I'll try to get some gravel riding in on a faster bike.

Very nice weather here today, 13 degrees and sunny. First ride in shorts since october and it was great to have the wind through the hairy legs again. Unfortunately the bike paths in the forest were still very icy in places, which was very unpleasant with my slicks.

Need some new dirt / gravel tires for my touring bike. I got Conti Cyclo X Kings last year, and they were clearly meant for just riding around in the grass as they quickly melted away on the relatively little pavement riding I did.

I was looking at Schwalbe G-One, but I'm hesitant to go with a tire designed for tubeless use since the beads are so tight it makes fixing flats a huge hassle. So I'm going to give Conti Cyclocross Speed tires a try. Pretty cheap and the reviews seem to indicate better durability than my last contis.

Nice warm 52 km ride yesterday. Encountered mud in a few spots, fortunately not deep or sticky enough to jam my fenders. Fat bike "race" on Monday, but it is supposed to be 7 C or higher. More of a ride than a race, since the winner will be decided by luck, not who finishes first. I guess the sponsor wants more people to have a chance at the top prizes than the usual half dozen top local riders.

9th day in a row riding. Decided to ride past this one area that is usually pretty muddy when wet, and sure enough it was pretty muddy. Lots of puddles with a thin layer of ice that I got to break. The worst of the semi packed snow is gone from the MUP, so little need to be careful. Even most streets have ruts melted all the way to bare pavement. The weather has been great this week, still plenty of local pussies only using Zwift.

Went out 50 miles today around 35 F. Main roads were mostly clear of snow/ice/slush, but I detoured around a couple of them so I used my studded tires to the fullest for a few chunks.

It was raining gently the whole time and my rainproof boots, leggings, jacket and gloves worked well enough, but my gear was pretty wet with sweat by the end.

Snow and ice are pretty and all, but I'm about ready for some wildflowers instead.

You taco'd your brooks! With my B17 I had to lace it after less than a year to keep it from sagging.

I've got the same bike but I needed to add a steerer tube extender to get the bars level with saddle. Made a night and day change to my comfort level. I went from considering selling it to riding 12,000 km on it last year.

Took a nasty fall going 15 mph in the rain yesterday. The pavement was raised and I went to cross it at too shallow of an angle which caused my tire to shimmy/stall and I bit the concrete.

Got pretty lucky all things considered. I was wearing a rain jacket and winter leather gloves. Only cuts were on my knee where my jeans tore. Still pretty sore and stiff.

First time out in 4 months. Main bike is on a trainer and I did not feel like swapping tires. Took out my old hybrid turned neglected Franken-bike project. 8 miles in and my Afro engineered single ring crank starts throwing the chain off. Get it back on and snap the chain 10 seconds later.

After 3 years of riding nothing but road bikes that hybrid was a shitload of fun. I need to get a real 1x9 setup on it.

Cooling off but still above freezing today. On the last leg of my ride going down a gravel road I came across a lazy person "walking" their dogs, by having them run outside their moving car. One of dogs was doing a kind of sideways run 4" in front of the bumper staring at the driver. Given the speed they were driving I'm surprised they didn't run the damn thing over.

The cumulative elevation gain is 2056m and the distance is about 92km for the entire trip.

I had to walk last 3km when reaching the top because I had no more food left and didn't expect 14º climb. Had to return home totally bonked.

The wind up there almost made me slip and fall which is another bonus to the experience.

But you did it in the middle of the night? In what I assume is a northern hemisphere winter? Are you crazy??? Were you able to hit the descent hard or could you just not see far enough ahead?

I'm from Spain. The weather was OK but by the time I reached the peak it was 8 pm and pretty dark. I started the trip at 1 pm and returned home at 1 am. Stayed up there for about hour and a half checking out the views aswell.

The descent was dark but I had 1000 lumen light and 6 hour battery with me. Also having a normal rain coat (not the roadie thin piece of crap) with you is a life saver and protects from wind really well.

Took advantage of a break in the shit weather. 75km from my city up into the snowy hills and back, test my new cheapo second bike. Gorgeous when I got above the snowline, but the country roads leading out the city were covered in mud, slush and meltwater. Got soaked and muddy. And on top of that, I pulled the brakes before a corner on a small descent, and what I thought was a skim of surface water was actually a remnant bit of ice. Crashed.

Did my first century of the year. It was 20 F when I started, but above freezing by the time I finished. Gained (and lost) ~3300 feet and enjoyed a 15-20 mph tailwind for most of the return trip.

I did it with my slicks and kind of regret it. Sure, the riding was easier, but I had to change my route a couple times after finding that quiet roads above 2500 feet are still covered with ice. The lower roads were pretty nice though, just a lot of sand on the edges.

I got tanlines from the ski goggles I wore. They're pretty silly - dark arcs around my cheekbones. It's not warm enough to lose my balaclava yet, but exposing some of my face feels nice, especially on ascents.

whether or not you get punctures is always an exercise in probabilities - protection inside the tire doesn't actually prevent flats, it just reduces the probability of having a puncture on a given ride

I used to think I was addicted to cycling, but I think its just a general exercise addiction. I'd be in a bad mood if I didn't ride for a few days. But I've found running on a treadmill on the days that are too awful to ride keep that from happening.
>>
Every year I seem to reach a point where I say, "Fuck it winter, you win". Weather has been crap all week around -15 to -20 °C, and the lack of snow just seems to make it worse. No riding, just running on the treadmill watching the first half of movies. Managed a 10 mile, 2 hour run to watch an entire movie today. Next week sunny and above freezing Tuesday onward, so I'll put on my new cross tires and hit the gravel. Wanted go for a calm ride in the nice sunny weather, but I ended up feeling good and just going fast. Like I always end up doing desu, I dont know what I was expecting.

I also seem to have '''fixed''' my cramp problem by drinking a fuckton during the ride. During this ride I had 1l of isotonic and 1l of water. I used to last twice as long on that amount of drink, so im kind of worried about riding more than 100km now. I should probably get a 3rd bottle cage and stick another 1l bottle in there.

4°C with wind 40 gusting to 50 kph. Wasn't too bad to ride in inside the city but I only saw two other bikes. About the same tomorrow but I'll brave riding out in the open in the morning. Higher than ideal winds forecast all the way to next Thursday, but potentially some nice days late next week. I just know the graders will be out all next week churning up the perfectly packed gravel roads into a loose mess.

I finally got some time to ride today
Its been almost 5 months since I was last on a bike
rode against the wind for 11 miles, got a flat at mile 4
turned around and was able to ride with the wind and broke 30 mph a few times.
god i missed that feeling.

Really nice ride, I'm so happy the paths are finally dry. Even though that just makes me more aware of how poorly paved they are. Ran into some furry friends also enjoying the weather (in the background of pic). Also found a relatively hidden lake around where I live, I wanna try and throw a little kegger there since it's only accessible by bike at night.

Got up to 9 °C today so I went for a 100 km ride. I planned on it being almost all gravel, but ended up being 3/4 due to mud detours. There was a road closed sign ahead of the pic, but I decided to disregard it should there be a chance of getting across. Ended up being quite wide and fast moving.

I skimped on water only taking 3 bottles, but could have used a 4th. 3 would have been sufficient if my HR hadn't been up due to jumping into a long ride after a break. I got this odd tingly stiffness in my quads for the last 25 km. But it went away when I stopped and my legs aren't stiff at all now, so I should be good for another long ride tomorrow.

>>1058230
Calf compression sleeves. I like the Zensah ones. You can wear them while riding or after a ride to make your calves feel better.
>>
>>1058231
Aren't compression sleeves pretty much placebo?
>>
>>1058233
For riding I find them most helpful on bumpy roads, washboard / winter riding. If I'm getting hard jolts and my calf muscle bounces downward just before contracting it seems to increase the chances of a muscle pull. The compression sleeves help support the muscle and have greatly reduced the number of muscle pulls I've experienced. Even with a muscle pull I find I can still ride if I put the sleeves on and feel almost no pain while riding.

Can't say if they speed recovery time, but they sure make my legs feel much better than when I'm not wearing them, soreness all but disappears.

Help me understand this because next week I am going to start riding 25 miles to work, three times a week.

I right have very little fat, and I am not interested in body building but would love to having calves and thighs that are ripped.

This is what I don't understand:

I am a very small eater. I know at the end of such a ride I will be starving, let's say I have a big lunch each time then, wouldn't all that bike ride have been just for nothing when those calories you burned get right back in if we assume it's a big lunch?

n00b here. Finally got my first training ride in today for my upcoming tour this summer. I'm in a lot worse shape than I originally thought. I was planning on training for a month and a half before I left, but now I'm thinking I need at least 2 months. I want to ride the transam, and I was thinking about leaving mid may. Now June looks better. I don't want to leave later than that. Only rode for half an hour, and it kicked my ass. I don't know how many miles because I haven't hooked up my bike computer yet. There was a fair amount of hills. This was completely unloaded too. I've never even ridden a loaded touring bike before. My hands were starting to numb a little by the end even with gloves on. I think I just need to adjust the seat a little bit.
>>
Brutal wind gusting to 60 km/h on the return trip. At least I was in the city, looking at Strava a bunch of people did a 110 km ride out of the city where there would be no wind breaks. Thinking today would be an easy 50 km city ride I only took 1 bottle and no snacks. Better weather tomorrow onward, just in time for brevet season to kick off next weekend.

Put on about 8 lbs over the winter that I'm trying to lose. I think I'm still down about 8 from where I was this time last year. Would like to get down to under 150 this year which would be my lowest this millennium.
>>
First ride of the season, 50km on mostly flat.

I expected it to be worse, but I didn't get too tired and managed to keep a 28km/h average despite some wind.

The cagers are getting exceedingly friendly each year, only about 5 close passes and 1 that was rather dangerous and I don't think I've seen a single one that was drunk on the road, although admittedly it was before lunch.
>>
Cager just wrote off my cage while it was parked in front of the house. At least it wasn't a hit and run. Moved the car about 20 feet from where it was parked. Maybe I'll live the car free lifestyle for a little while since I have no need for one at the moment.

went to my local lake with some friends on Saturday, around 30 miles there and back with a lot of elevation both ways.

took us a long time on our hard tail mountain bikes but we had fun.

the first stretch coming back from the lake is 2.5miles with a 700ft incline, riding up there and seeing all the road bikes just flying past me kinda makes me want to try one.

longest ride ive done, 10/10

going to make it a thing to ride somewhere new every week, need to get a new crankset tho as my crankarm is threaded and i have to tighten it often.
>>
I started feeling sick last night, and definitely had a head cold this morning. Didn't let it stop me from doing an easy 50 km. Started feeling worse after I got back and more congested. Pretty mild as colds go, hope I can sleep it off tonight, though tomorrow is the worst looking day of the week so would be a good time to slip in a rest day.

Exercise doesn't actually burn that much, if you want to lose weight then diet is more important.

Protein for muscle building and fat (but use healthy sources, like nuts and yogurt) for energy. Try to stay away from sugar. Research foods that are nutritionally dense but also low-calorie. Stuff like oatmeal and smoothies are good for making you feel stuffed without actually taking up too much of your caloric budget, also you can mix protein powder into them

Your exact needs depend on the amount of activity you will be doing plus how you want your body to change. Ask around fitness forums and do research into different kinds of diets

Went on a group ride today, but the pre-arranged route was not a good match for the weather. Quick 28 km ride out, but coming back was tough. A small group left ahead of me and some others were getting ready to go so I figured I'd either catch up to the first group or some people would catch up with me, but neither really happened. On the way back I managed 14.5 km/h in the drops pushing fairly hard the whole way. One guy with aerobars caught up with me, but I didn't manage to reach the group ahead of me.

Rode 76 miles. Up and over the mountains and then back through a canyon, uphill (barely) and upwind.

A 25 mph headwind isn't that bad, but dealing with the canyon concentrating it and the fatigue I had from the gravel roads in the mountains was rough. I spent a decent amount of time going up the ~0.3% grade using my 22 tooth granny gear. Ran out of water towards the end and made it to a gas station feeling quite dehydrated. I'll need to get used to not carrying a 10 L bladder like I do while touring.

On the bright side, the roads were very quiet. The canyon road was nearly deserted thanks to the end of some running event. I don't think the gravel roads around the pass are ever very busy and enough snow was melting near the top to have the creek running across the road a few times.
>>
Went out for a late 75k ride with some gruelling hills. Everything was going fucking perfect, until the very end of the ride when I got distracted for a second because I was saying goodbye to my mates, which caused me to slip on one of those shitty parts of the road where the lanes join, I slipped and crashed. I got some road rash, especially on my left knee (the hardest part of the knee, thank god) and on my right buttock. There's not one significant scratch on the bike. Any tips for not slipping like an asshole on shitty roads? I mean, besides paying attention to the fucking road.
>>
Went for 90 km today. Dirt roads are still too wet to ride on so I didn't do all of my planned route. Made a note of touring bike odo to keep track of how long a new pair of tires last. Also noticed that its been 6,600 km since the last chain replacement on my touring bike which is about 2000 more than I usually let the chains go. Maybe I changed it in the fall but forgot to write it down, the chain checker will tell.

Chain wear was past .75 but hadn't reached 1 yet. Added a calculation to my ride log spreadsheet to show current distance on current chain for all my bikes. Used my last chain so ordered a bunch of KMC X9.93 chains from Wiggle and some more shift cable inners.

Did two rides in three parts today.
In the morning was getting up at ungodly hour to do the local shop ride, mostly taking it fairly easy with a nice ramp up before the turn around point. Then a puncture. 50 km all up.

In the afternoon, rode across town and into the hills for a friend's birthday party. Coming back was in the total dark which is new to me, kind of fun. The headwind returning was a bit vicious though, made it a slog. 35 km each way, give or take.

I quit riding due to laziness and due to my mind tormenting myself "You're so slow, This wind sucks, Of course it's raining, Why are you so tired etc" but I've been working on turning off my mind becasue it affects my sleep and I worked on that this ride and did pretty well. Knocked this out yesterday. I've done longer rides, with more gear and more hills, but this was the longest of the year. Also, my good friend, the wind, made the first ~20 miles much harder and the last ~20 miles much easier.

Got a top 10 in a segment today. Every once in a while I come across a segment with surprisingly few attempts given the location of the road. Only 99 total attempts on a rode that directly connects 2 highways that get a lot of riders. I guess people chicken out due to the lack of shoulder even though there is little traffic. Later this year that road will be cutoff on both ends by a new motorway and will be a nice straight road that doesn't go anywhere. But at that point it will be impossible to ride the old segment. So many defunct local segments from the last few years of construction.

I suggested switching the route to go west instead. If they are sticking with the east route I'll just go for a ride by myself. Forecast was for 40 gusting to 60 km/h, and could very well end up being that. The prospect of doing 75 km at 15 km/h or less is not appealing.

We went west and it was windy. Pretty slow going, and got really slow near our mid-point lunch stop when one of the riders started to bonk. I gave them a bottle of Ensure to slam before lunch to get a head start digesting something otherwise they would have been just as beat for 30 minutes after lunch. They were still far from 100% for the entire return leg, but the wind kept our average speed over 32 km/h, even though my HR was in the idle zone as I soft pedaled most of the way.

Got a little wet the last two rides, still better than the wicked winds of last week.

I've been looking for a method to see an updated map of which roads I've ridden now that I don't have Strava premium. I have something that works but its a bit clunky and not as responsive as I'd like. I installed Python and a plugin called Spatialite (stores gps data in a sqlite database) so I could use an import script called gpx2spatialite (had errors and had to tweak it a little) to import all my gpx files that I bulk downloaded from strava. Then I can use QGIS to show all the tracks at once. QGIS can display a background map using a plugin but it blanks the screen while it downloads tiles any time you pan or zoom instead of managing the map on the fly. A plugin called QuickMapServices does some caching and is much faster than OpenLayers, but still a bit annoying.

Not having Strava premium I have to download my individual gpx files for new rides from Garmin Connect instead.
>>
>>1065738
Light wind from every direction at some point during today's ride.

Looking at my cycling map in QGIS I noticed a 20 foot section I hadn't covered when biking the whole city a few years ago. So I had to go ride that spot while I was out. With the Strava heatmap it can be difficult to spot very small gaps since it just displays gps points on the map, and with Garmin's smart recording the distance between points can vary a lot.

Nearly every traffic light in the city uses radar to determine if there is a vehicle present. And some minor roadways never get a green light unless a vehicle is detected. I was at one of these intersections that has been giving me trouble lately and it skipped my cycle again today. So after traffic cleared I rode though the red light and the car behind me followed. Though the presence of that car probably would have triggered the light on the next cycle, but fuck it I waited long enough.
>>
Feeling really stupid and a little bit shaken, especially since Mr. Scarponi just died when he did have right of way.

Must have spaced out going through an intersection, because it didn't register at all that it was my give way. Fortunately the Hyundai who had right of way had the wherewithal to notice I was being retarded, and stepped short.

>out for ride
>see 3 cars ahead lined up waiting to cross wide busy street
>turn left down alley before that street, cut through sub shop parking lot, then turn right onto busy street getting into left turn lane
>get to cross before any of the vehicles that were waiting
I generally cross busy roads at traffic lights. Next road over has lights but its a bit of a death trap between a blind curve, apartments and mall traffic.

I hate wide roads with multiple lanes of traffic in each direction. Can be difficult getting a gap in traffic from both directions in order to cross whole road. Half the time someone slows to a crawl or stops, compressing traffic eliminating the gap I was aiming for. Drivers are too unpredictable to go half way across without ending up in a dangerous situation. ie: stop in one lane, blocking my view of other lane while traffic in other lane doesn't stop.

So my sneak technique gives me a safe place to wait while waiting for chance to cross first half, then a median protected left turn lane to wait for gap in traffic on second half of road.

Drivers illegally trying to yield their right of way to me drives me fucking nuts. Its completely retarded, and delays cyclists more than if they hadn't stopped. 95% of the time I wave them past which seems to piss them off for some reason.

>he has duty for small imports
I want to laugh, but they're trying to introduce it here and there is a massive shitstorm because the gubmint thinks for some reason international retailers should be collecting gst to send to australia.

That said we do have gst on purchases over $1000, it's still usually cheaper to import though.
>>
>>1067080
I'm jelly of US $800 limit for tax free imports for individuals. In Canada its $20. Ordering from US I get nailed for tax damn near every time. From the UK I think I'm at twice ever but maybe that's changing or maybe they look for certain codes on the customs form.

Some US websites will charge the Canadian tax at the time of purchase which ends up saving money by eliminating the $10 fee which used to only be $5 a few years back (or $30 through a courier).

OpenStreetMap editing season has returned. Not warm / calm enough for long country rides so a lot of 2.5 hour city rides where I ride around and notice new stuff to add to the map. That and the satellite imagery was recently updated to only be a year old instead of 4 years old.

While out today I found a narrow sidewalk path in an old neighborhood that cut between houses from one road to another. I thought I had all those little shortcuts that are invisible on the satellite images mapped out. Those types of paths have all but disappear in the designs for newer neighborhoods, making it harder to get around on foot / bike.

Slow 200 km ride today. First 80 km was fast with a good tailwind. Once we got into a headwind the two guys I rode with weren't doing so well. Since I was feeling pretty good I just pulled the last 120 km to keep my HR up, but even then it was in the 120s much of the time.

But I love how smooth it rides, I got a rack for it too and a rackbag.
Had to heighten my seat a bit but holy beans it feels way better riding with the seatpost up.

>>
>>1068736
cool, enjoy that - price point means it's got a limited lifespan but you can easily extend that by doing routine maintenance and treating it well. fenders are a good investment for sure.
>>
>>1068708
I thought the other guys were really slacking yesterday but I think part of it was something that also happened last year. Early in yesterday's ride my HR for a given effort dropped about 20-25 bpm. For the last few weeks my HR hovered around 150-155 bpm under a decent but not strenuous effort, which is higher than my typical 145, but that's normal for me coming out of winter. Then yesterday after warming up it dropped to 130 or less.

I went out for a 2 hour ride today and my HR was between 125 and 130 most of the time. Weird.
>>
Did some maintenance today. While cleaning chain on most used bike I noticed some unusual movement in the lower jockey wheel. When I gave it a wiggle I could move it side to side about half an inch. So I replaced both wheels with better quality sealed ones off a mangled derailleur.

Also going to have to re-lace my Brooks saddle. Last time used leather lace which appears to have stretched out. Regular fabric laces break after a year, so I got some some kevlar laces like I have on my other saddles.

I've only started riding again about a month ago, before that I rode maybe 4 months, took around 6 months off.

I've done much longer rides but never had a computer to target my cadence which is a weak point of mine.

This has got to be the hardest ride I've ever done, had I waited until later in the evening it may have been better but I guess I am satisfied with the results but I really need to work on keeping 80+ on the climbs.

I did my first fairly long ride this weekend, over 60 miles, where the longest I've gone before that was 25. I think I pushed myself a bit too hard because I have some pain in my right kneecap when I move it in certain ways. Is this the common runners knee? What should I do?
>>
>>1069815
Pushing too big a gear can cause knee issues, spin an easier gear faster. Might also be saddle position, too high, too low, too far forward or back. If you knee sort of jogs outward during the pedal stroke that could be an indication of a fit issue.

Uh oh, I accidentally stumbled across Veloviewer's Explorer feature. Now I'm going to be compelled to ride far and wide to expand my max square coverage. I currently have a few 10x10s but should be able to get to between 13 and 16 in a few rides by filling some small gaps.

The G one is good but wears fast. Not ideal for touring. The cyclo speed won't wear as fast but it will still wear fairly fast due to having limited tread thickness. There's a reason it's only 350g for 35mm. It's cheap though.
>>
>>1070021
I've got 1,300 km on the Cyclocross Speed's already, mostly pavement. Center row of knobs (roughly 3 mm wide) on the rear have worn just about smooth. Not quite as good on loose gravel as I had hoped, which isn't surprising, but it gets the job done. I'll keep an eye on it and see how far I can let it wear before it starts giving me trouble. Front tire is doing fine, when I ordered them I got 3 of them expecting the front to last much longer.

Today's ride got me to a 13 x 13 box. Finished riding some dirt roads west of town that were too wet to ride last fall. Came to a rail crossing where a train was coming to a stop. In other train related news, CP is going to start using 60 ft intermodal containers in Canada.

Wind was 30 gusting to 40 km/h when I woke up for a 200 km ride, so I emailed the organizer to say I wouldn't be going then went back to sleep. The wind died down before I woke up so the right might have been borderline doable if we got the first 50 km done before it picked up to the forecast 40 gusting to 60. By then it was too late to get ready in time, so I hopped on a ride another club was running. On the way home I got 3 wind assisted top 10 MUP segment places. One of them is tricky due to tight flat corners and s-curves.

Tomorrow the wind is still supposed to be 40 gusting to 60 km/h. I'm helping do some work on my parents cottage which happens to be downwind 54 km. So I'm going to ride out there and throw my bike in a truck for the return trip. But since I need to drive my brother's car back, I can bike from his place to mine which is also downwind.

Did some exploring in some spots that were too wet to ride last year. They were less wet but still a few permanent bogs right in the middle of the road. The gravel roads are mostly loose and will need a decent rain to get packed back down. I saw a grader going down one road with a rotary bar in the front breaking up the road surface which would explain the really loose stuff. Got my first wedge tan from the gap between my sun sleeves and gloves.

Recently moved my pump to my seat tube. Just far enough out of the way that my legs don't hit it. When I first got the pump years ago I put it on the bosses under the downtube where it caught all the crap thrown off my front tire giving it a sandblasted look.

Took my new frame for a spin, still need a new clamp for the FD but couldn't wait to try it so I just put the chain on the small ring and went for a ride anyway. Frame feels solid, carbon fork smoothens the ride, geo is more relaxed than my previous frame, stem is already slammed yet the saddle-bar drop is very little (headtube is HUGE). Guess I'll get a stem with a more aggressive angle eventually.

Was only supposed to be a 15-20 kph wind yesterday but it ended up being between 30 and 40. I was collecting some veloviewer explorer squares yesterday and missed two that I'll have to go back for. One of them because when I plot a route with an out and back my Garmin will often tell me to turn around well before the point I had plotted so I missed entering the square by about 100 feet. A bunch of impossible to reach squares, so this latest obsession should only keep me busy a few more weeks.

Windy again today but also cold and cloudy so I'll sit this one out.

Tomorrow I'm going to check if a new paved service road is open yet which will make a nice route for going east.

>while distracted fixing flat, forgot to put bottles on the bike
And it was windy again. I had some water since I was planning a long ride and had a bag for refilling my bottles. Cut the ride a little short since I was going to be heading back into the wind and it was twice as strong as forecast.
>>
I rode shirtless and helmetless today. I feel so bad but the wind felt so good.

Reckon your tyre might still have something in it? Had a problem similar to that, took a super thorough going over and I'm still not sure it's fixed.

At least one of them was a poorly adhered patch that I managed to peel off. I think the other was used in my studded tire as it was on its last leg pushing the studs through the casing damaging the tube in multiple spots.

I really should do a better job of verifying a tube is free of leaks before putting it back into rotation. I should also buy some new ones. Only have one 700x32 spare so I've started using extra 23-25's I had laying around.

>Try to do route again today but modified
>It starts pouring again not even 10 miles into my ride despite it being previously sunny and 10% chance of rain
>Fuckit not backing out
>My route takes me along a road with no shoulder and only a rumble strip with two lanes and traffic going in both directions
>I rode up the road once and vowed to never do that again since it's a steep climb and there's only the rumble strip
>I figured going down would be better
>It wasn't since there was a lot of traffic and people were unable to pass due to windyness of road and traffic in the other direction
>Nearly wiped out on rumble strip when a car did pass super close
>Made down road in a decent time
>Rode through heavy tourist area, soaking wet, but felt bad ass becasue it was still raining pretty heavily
>Hit my turn around point and start heading back home
>Still fucking raining my entire climb home
>Don't regret the ride one single bit even though my kit ended up with a few stains

It's starting to get to the point where I don't know what to do unless I'm on my bike. I don't give a fuck about TV shows, couldn't care less about any video games all I can think about is my next ride.

how did they 'find' you on strava? IS it like in real time with avatars?

Out for a 100 km mostly gravel ride today. My legs felt pretty good until I'd encounter a hill, then jello. I should take a few consecutive days off to give my legs a break. I've been riding a lot to take advantage of the unusually dry May to visit a bunch of dirt roads that are unusable when wet.

I really fucking hate Hawaii sometimes.

>Set out for ride
>First half of ride is all down hill
>Manage to have really strong head wind the entire way
>Figure "At least I'll have the tail wind coming back up"
>Wind decided to change direction and face same strong head win going back home all the way up the climb
>Wind decides to shift to the side too so I'm fighting for control

>No matter where I ride I'm either going up or down a hill

>Weather forecast could say 10% chance of rain and it be perfectly sunny out
>Manages to pour even though there's blue sky

I mean the weather is nice for year round fitness but the shit gets old FAST. I figure at least when I get stationed somewhere else and if there's flats I should be able to do really well on them since I'm basically always climbing or descending, a majority of the time into some degree of headwind.
Despite all this I still fucking love riding and even though there may be times that I go really slow on a route I know I can do fast and even though I know I could push myself harder even though i don't know how I still always look forward to my daily ride
Nasty wind today, riding is definitely out of the question. Currently gusting to 90 km/h. The sky is a tan colour from all the dust getting kicked up.

It rained yesterday, the local trails were really muddy today, got lots of clay stuck under my fenders, I had fun nonetheless.

1000m sweet climb and descent today, messed up my front rim - not the one pictured, ma40 is durable as hell.
I had Mavic Module 3 SPB in front and after the bad part of the road on descent, had a wobble Ill have to tru, but the rim is so soft, barely made it down...

What 36h, box profile rim do you recommend?

i learned the hard way to slime up my tubes too, now all i hear is a faint little hiss then nothing.

Having one of the longest non-riding stretches in quite a while. Nothing in the past 4 days and probably nothing tomorrow either. Partly shitty weather, partly things and stuff. Need to order a few cubic yards of poop for the garden tomorrow.

Got back from a ~230 mile (long) weekend tour this morning. I would have gone further, but I ran into some terrain I didn't think I could ride through (pic related). I got some solitude past the 'road closed' signs and it rekindled my thirst for adventure.

Hopefully I get plenty of opportunities to get out this summer, in spite of the 40 hour weeks I'm expected to work.
