Honestly, I feel kinda bad for that bike. It doesn't WANT to be shit, and it's not its fault it's so heavy. I almost want to get an old department store bike and fix it up with good components so it can be the good bike it wants to be.

>t. autist who is sympathetic towards inanimate bicycles
>>
>>1046725
Dear GOD! I know this feel. I feel bad when I see bikes set up shit and unlooked after, especially when I see them on gumtree.
>>
>>1046179
I vote for the Mercier Kilo TT. It's in the ballpark of $300, has proper track geometry and the threaded headset version had aesthetics. Even the current version beats the living hell out of any other "fixie" bikes in the same price point.
>>
>>1046712
>>1046686
Probably on account of the fact that it's not a bicycle, it's simply a piece of shit hastily molded into the shape of something resembling a bicycle.

I still can't believe they're legally allowed to sell the split handlebar.
>>
>>1046725
>I almost want to get an old department store bike and fix it up with good components so it can be the good bike it wants to be.
Or you could just go to the bank, get that money cashed in dimes, and shove them up your ass one at a time; the end results would probably be similar.

I loved the crap out of this shitty Schwinn back when it was all I had. It's not even a bike compared to my Cannondale, but it did the job every time. (Until the pedals fell off)

The thruster fixie weighs less. So does the Kent cruiser bike. They made an aluminum fixie bike called the PHX which might be the lightest adult Walmart bike you can get.
>>

I've enjoyed a lot of Walmart bikes. Even the Roadmaster bikes are more pleasant. The Denali is a bike from hell. My brother gave it to me for free, so I don't want to toss or scrap it.

The Thruster Fixies are $59 now. I hear they are not bad for a wal-mart bike. The newest iteration has center-pull brakes but I hear the older side-pull ones aren't so good. Not terribly heavy.

Saw the Thruster Fixie today. 1 left. I think my single speed obsession is over since I rode my Diamondback MTB today. Went to both Wal-Marts and got my hair cut. They have a 27.5 MTB for $150 with front/rear discs. There were also a few sporting front disc/rear rim brakes.
>>
>>1047770
It looked ok to me. Fairly narrow tires and not too heavy. It's only 7 speeds but that's good for such a cheap bike. The seat post and clamp looked flimsy.

They also had a green road bike with stem shifters. Much better and cheaper than the hideous GMC Denali. Twist shifters are horrible on a road bike.

This entire assembled bike costs less than one component of my drivetrain (pick any). I can't imagine it's any good at all, for pretty much any purpose.

>>1048084
These I'm actually curious about. If they can be made of steel or stiff alluminum, and don't need as many delicate drivetrain parts... Obviously you need to replace the wheels with trued ones, real tires and tubes and QR... And probably overhaul the brakes too if you enjoy living, but they might actually ride decently for less than $300 total.

I hear the dual suspension makes them flimsy. My old aluminum frame Pacific bike (made in 1999) was pretty tough. That 27.5 bike was probably heavy steel, but not anything like that fluorescent yellow Huffy POS. That particular bike must be unpopular since it keeps getting marked down.

At CalPoly in SLO, California, I saw so many of those. I figured they were giving them out free with tuition or something.

People say a car is required, but very few spend a tiny fraction of the cost of a car on alternative transport... no surprise it's a struggle. Avg. cost of car ownership is supposedly ~$8700/yr in the US. At that amount, buy train, bus, uber fare and still have enough for a new top of the line commuter bike dressed in ortlieb twice a year. Or expensive coffees on the way to work. Or a hub powered ham radio station.

Actually I might hurt myself or collapse the ramps with that heavy ass bike. Especially when you accidentally hit the coaster brake at the top and end up falling off.

This is the king of Walmart bikes. Cheap, reliable (good reviews), and finally has good brakes too (they went with center-pull MTB style brakes finally). I believe there is still a drop bar variant, but it's not worth the extra money and I've never seen it in-store.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the Mongoose Beast fatbike, my mistake.

I think this one might be pretty cool. Looks a bit higher quality than the Dirt Jumper. It's still only $100 at Walmart.
>>
>>1050578
I can tell you firsthand then that doesn't mean much. The Schwinn was total garbage while the Cannondale is an excellent bike.
>>
Talk me out of this. I already have a nice quality road bike, but I want something that doesn't matter if it gets stolen from a bike rack, and is cheaply replaced often.

Rear derailleur cable housing!
>>
>>1050777
Do it. The riser bar one is cheaper and reportedly has better brakes though (at least the newer, tasteful blue colored model). If you need drop bars, get this one I guess. The standard tires aren't great but you can get replacements once you wear them out.

I'm really tempted to get one myself, but I live with mom and dad and my basement is filled with old BMX bikes that my dad won't part with, and I have more than enough bikes myself. I wonder how narrow the rims are, if I can use skinnier tires. IIRC there is an aluminum fixie but it only has the riser bars and it is the most ugly (but lightest) of the bunch.

This was my first decent department store bike. I think it was made around 1998/1999 and I got it from a garage sale. It was made from aluminum and decently light. It had a super granny gear (huge rear cog) which made it a great hill climber. It lasted a pretty long time but I eventually gave it to some kid and it got ripped off almost immediately.
>>
>>1052611
That bike looks kind of cool. Would ride.
>>
>>1052616
That one's not mine really, I don't have a pic of it anymore lol. It was the same bike. I put one of those springy seats on it. That was back when I was fat and wanted a comfy seat for long rides. Nowadays I usually prefer the skinny MTB or road style seats. I don't know where it was bought from originally, but I think K-mart. It's kind of weird, because it's a late 90s bike, which places it in between the classic 90s rigid MTB and today's mountain bikes. It has suspension but it still has a more traditional geometry.

Wow that thing looks like an actual mountain bike
>>
As a Walmart employee I wouldn't suggest even buying one.

>I see countless bikes returned with a snapped crank
>Bikes left out all winter and sold with a preinstalled layer of rust
>The company that puts our stores bikes together over tightens bolts like a mother fucker leading to broken stems
>The one that boggles my mind is the tons of people that wind up losing their saddle, and it's not one specific model

The one good thing I can say is that management makes sure bikes get somewhat taken care of. At Christmas time when we do layaway all the stuff gets thrown in the room where we have our morning meetings, and they always yell at me for sitting on a bike because there aren't any chairs left.
>>

I think it held up pretty well. Seeing them ride it at a skate park actually piqued my interest. It might be a good cheap adult sized alternative to a BMX. I don't need any more bikes though since I'm going to get 2 ten speeds for free.

>>1057549
>You get your hair cut at Wal-Mart?
No, both have a Great Clips nearby. Still not a fancy place, but my hair is uncomplicated.

Earlier that day I went on a 25 mile ride on the other bike and a bird shit on my face like 5 miles away from the town I was approaching. It got on my glasses, hoodie, and brake levers.
