it goes in the slot on the side of the rack with a bungee cord over it to keep it from bouncing around

jesus christ what's wrong with the actual kryptonite bracket? It works great
>>
>>1042648
If you look at the lock, that lock doesn't have a way to mount to a bracket. nor do many other u locks
>>
I'm amazed at all of the bad reviews on amazon for various U-Locks where people seemed to have put their bike in the worst possible location, and then got mad when somebody steals it.

>I left my $1,500 bike in a dark alley in the ghetto at night in New York, and somebody stole it!
>This lock is terrible!

>>
>>1042648
On my Abus lock that shit snapped pretty fast in cold temps and rough roads. It was handy on the few rides it worked.

So I carry it in my backpack. Or just take a snall cable lock on the handlebars if I don't need better security.

are you womyns? just mount it on the frame, most u lock come with pretty good frame mounts

i use the laptop pocket in my rucksack, as i hardly every take a laptop with me, and it keeps the lock close to my back and low down.

where are you keeping your water bottle then?
>>
>>1042712
>where are you keeping your water bottle then?

one on the DT fits easily on my 54cm commuter, you can even mount 2 by mounting u lock on top tube and angling it a bit.
>>
>>1042649
because they took it off...

I have that lock
>>
>>1042638
for one bike, its strapped on top of the front rack with a toe clip strap
alternately can slip into the rail slot on rack, but not as good cause that will rattle around

for other bike, it goes into the frame triangle bag

been tempted to save the riding weight though and just buy multiple locks, and leave them locked to racks where I frequent. with only 3 or so locations it's not unfeasible...
>>
>>1042701
Kryptonite has a really great design compared to other lock companies tho. Honestly the reason they're the best

Lock mounts rattle too much
I used to carry it on my belt loop but I rarely ever ride with jeans
If I'm carrying stuff on my rack I'll put it there
But most of the time, like this

here, silent as a sleepy puppy >>1042706

>>1042719
Even if the mount is perfectly still and sturdy, the lock itself still rattles. Plus I've had locks fly off their mounts mid-ride, it wasn't very pleasant

>>

Damn, that's huge
>>
>>1042724
if it goes on the frame, its better to buy huge, its a commuter so weight doesnt bother me. its easier to lock on posts etc., .. they are even huger ones
>>
>>1042726
I know. I purposely chose the smallest possible lock that could go through frame+wheel+pole, so as to leave the smallest possible space for someone to jam a bar through, and break the lock with leverage.
Spending a minute looking for a proper post is a small inconvenience.
>>
>>1042728
>Spending a minute looking for a proper post is a small inconvenience.

Its managable, but I have a different approach - I like to be able to lock it as fast as possible,
>>
>>1042638
I have a weighty chain and padlock that I throw in my backpack, I don't mind the extra weight it kinda feels like I'm getting more exercise out of my rides.

>>
>>1042638
I use a chain lock. Yeah, it's supposedly not as secure but more convenient.
>>
I wonder why there's no standard commuter frame mounting point for u-locks.

The bidon mount isn't very sturdy, annoying to use, and it frequently interferes with other mounts.

Pic somewhat related.
>>
guis ur dooin et wrong

just leave ur lock wherever you intend on parking your bike if you are paranoid about the company removing write plz no cut on it

Nice oxymoron, fuck sweaty backs.
>>
>>1042718
Lock mounts rattle too much but this doesn't?
>>
>>1042804
Panniers too clunky - body offers some suspension for when I have my laptop in there. Plus I don't like the way the bike handles when there's weight on it. I sweat regardless.
>>
>>1042805
Indeed, due to the position you can push the lock down and it tightens, so it doesn't move around at all. Maybe a small rattle when riding over a pothole or something
>>
If I'm on a ride for the sake of riding, then I don't carry a lock at all because I don't get off my bike. If I do its because ive stopped in some rural ass cafe in the countryside where it will never get stolen and I can sit next to it outside or whatever.

If I'm commuting or riding about town for a seperate purpose to the shops or whatever I always have a bag with me where I keep my bits and bobs like locks etc.

Its a good system and I would advise everyone to do the same.
>>
>>1042945
>bag
>good system
>>
On my beater/spare, unless I have a rack fitted, the lock sits behind the steer tube, locked around the top tube and downtube. Shit rattles and bangs around and wears the paint, but the bike is aluminum and a POS so I don't really give a shit. It's a mountain bike, so there's enough wheel clearance that the lock doesn't interfere with steering.

My commuter has a rack, so the lock usually sits on that. It's still suboptimal, the thing rattles and it's bending the fuck out of the rack deck.

The rack is one of those Topeak "MTX" types with a mounting "rail" built into the deck- so when I get around to it, I'd like to fashion a mounting plate for the lock so I can just slide it into the rack deck to hold it in place.

>>1042648
I used the Kryptonite bracket for one of their cheaper locks and the fucker snapped within days. Now I use a Fahgettaboudit, which is much heavier, so I haven't bothered trying a bracket. There's no mounting clip anyway.

>>1042651
To be fair, there are a lot of naive people who seem to believe that any kind of solid lock, even a sub-$40 U-lock, is an impenetrable defense against theft. That might've been true in the 80s, but the cheap shit gets snipped easily now.
>>
What do y'all think about carrying it on your waist?
>>
>>1042648
It doesn't fit small frames. 5'4 manlet here and they never fit.

I just use an el-cheapo pannier I got for $2.50 off kijiji (Canadian craigslist equivalent) to carry my locks with. I also have carpenter pants that I use for commuting. The hammer loops allow me to carry locks. It sits pretty high up on the thighs that it wouldn't swing a whole lot.
>>
>>1043184
I don't want that shit hanging from my waist. I can't imagine how having this weight on my waist can make a good ride.
I always put my lock in my small Ortlieb together with my tools, spare tube and raingear.

>>
>>1043399
If by $120 you mean $90 which is on their website. Great quality; made in Canada. The price is fully justified. Also, I use it all the time and it's perfectly comfortable. Maybe you should stop using a pokey lock.
>>
>>1043184
Uncomfortable but I'd do it on very short trips.

>>
well fug I'm the only person ITT with a "motorcycle" chain locked around his waist plus mini ulock
>>
u lock stuck it through my bike seat. U get used to the extra weight.
>>
Just carry one in my bag with me. Even so, had too many locks cut so I only use em if I'm gonna be inside for a short amount of time. Otherwise I just walk. Here we have a rediculously high bike theft rate. Fucking poor people piss me off.

Just picked up this Abus Mini lock. I went back and forth on that and the Kryptonite Evolution 4 Mini. What sold me on the Abus was the double locking shackle VS the Evo's one. Plus my hope would be potential thieves have run into this lock less.

It's a small lock, so I'll probably use good ol' Sheldon's locking method and a cable for the front wheel.
>>
>>1043492
>implying poor people are cutting locks for your bike. Odds are pros are doing that.
>>
>>1043626
I have an Abus and it rattles against itself in shackle. Feels bad man.
>>
Commuting its in my bag. My laptop weighs as much, its no biggie.

I'm not a fancyboy so usually ride with a belt and pants, so the lock goes there for quick p2p rides.

If I'm riding to ride I won't take a lock or just a small New York Lock and cable. Big lock is for when I'm at work.

Frame mounts are awful. I cringe erry teim I see an expensive bike that just looks like it lives to carry the lock around it.

Buy a length of heater hose/radiator hose that fits snugly, and slip it over the shackle of the ulock. You can get this at any auto parts store, and some hardware stores. It's cheap, maybe $2 for enough to do a bike lock.

Drip a few drops of soapy water inside the hose before you try to slide it on, to counterract the friction of the rubber.

Heater hose is made out of a durable, reinforced black rubber, so you won't get that metal-on-metal noise.

For my lock, I had to be pretty precise with the length of the hose, to prevent rattle from the shackle/body. But it's silent now, regardless of how bumpy the road/trail is.

The only con I can think of: It will decrease the 'capacity' of your lock a bit. For instance, I can still lock around a street sign, but not a parking meter pole.
