Is anyone else obsessed with cruisers, even low quality ones like pic related? I have this sudden urge to buy another grandpa bike for cargo. I might want to buy a nicer cruiser if anything happens to mine (doubtful, because they last forever as long as you aren't doing Repack runs too often).

Imagine that frame with that double top tube supporting a bakfiet front rack

Like this? This is $179, kind of expensive for a Walmart bike
>>
I've wanted a nice 3 speed, hub geared cruiser for a while.
>>
As a fat guy it looks like a comfy bike. But once you lose weight (like I hope to) you will find a lighter bike more appealing due to cornering easier as you will have less weight to throw behind it.
>>
>>1041919
>for muritards, 'cruiser bikes' are a thing

o boy
>>
>>1041919
my first bike was a schwinn cruiser

got stolen
>>
I think they're ugly and I'm not sure what the point is
I'd rather ride a full suspension belt drive mountain bike with slicks and racks
>>
>>1041990
What's actually wrong with them? No worse than Dutch bikes or those shitty roadster bikes with rod brakes.
>>
>>1042155
Yeah. At least an actual Raleigh DL-1 has a 3-speed hub.
>>
>>1041947
I went from 5'11 215 lbs to 150 lbs in a summer. I ride a cruiser, mountain bike, and road bike. It's not about the seat for me. I sometimes like riding a SS bike with a coaster brake. My ass is nothing but bone and muscle at this point. Even BMX plastic seats feel okay. But my 29er mountain bike has hydro disc brakes that scrape and squeal. The front disc is out of true because of being dropped, or that texting driver that hit me at an intersection. My folding bike has shitty rim brakes, and the front squeals. The cruiser is just as fun to ride. I have launched it off dirt and skate ramps. It's not terribly heavy either, about 29 lbs. And it came from Walmart of all places.
>>
>>1042160
I tried riding a 24" BMX bike earlier. It's still not tall enough to pedal efficiently sitting down. It has a high gearing (it's a race bike, not a freestyle) and very fast in short bursts, but not really useful or comfortable transportation. For the mile or so to work and back, it's okay to take once in a while. But the cruiser is even simpler to ride and it is actually comfortable.
>>
>>1042180
Man, I could ride a 24" for days. Then again, I used to ride 35-45 km a day on a bmx. So it was, relative to my BMX, a luxury bike to me.
>>
>>1042155
>No worse than Dutch bikes or those shitty roadster bikes with rod brakes.

Cruiser bikes are for old and poor people, not sophisticated urbanites like myself that ride to our social media marketing job, gluten-free bakery and coffee shop, vinyl record shop, and bar with our craft beer bottles stuffed into the banana holders on the back. Keep Portland weird!
>>
>>1041919
Have no pictures

Unfortunately

But I used one of these for some real heavy cargo runs, 40lbs front 35lbs rear. Entire frame flexed front to back uncontrollably, was basically unridable. Look, I love these too but there's no getting around it: get a REAL frame for cargo work and save these cruisers for corner-store and bar cruise work.
>>
>>1042434
>40lbs front 35lbs rear. Entire frame flexed front to back uncontrollably, was basically unridable

I probably won't ever do that much. 35 lbs on the back maybe. My current cruiser is aluminum so that worries me, no rack anyway so I won't try carrying anything on it right now.

I'm about to get hold of one because I think they look cool. I'm mostly ignorant about them though. For example the guy had to explain how you break by peddling backwards or something along those lines.
>>
>>1042769
Electras are really nice, I thought about getting one. Of course the main feature of those bikes is the forward pedaling position. I'm not sure if it feels less upright/nimble with the cranks out forward like that.

Just don't do a long downhill with that brake

My coaster brake bike stops a little slower but it is the only one I never have issues with.

Does this qualify as a cruiser? For <5km rides it beats anything else.

Yes I know the saddle is way too pointy-uppy. Its very comfortable.

Also the saddle was probably pointing upwards because I had just crashed, coming to think of it.

>tfw you will never go for a ride at 5am without any worries at all, then crash and still dont have any worries.

ah bless school times.
>>
>>1042891
Also it does click and pop a lot. Probably needs new grease but it hasn't slowed me down any and still brakes well, so I'll fix it later.
>>
>>1042884
Well he's selling it for cheap ($275) and it's had a new chain, seat and some other stuff. 3 gear too. Even if I don;t take to it it;s not too big a loss.

>>1042889
>>1042891
Actually in the EU (or UK I'm not sure) there has to be a front brake to comply with some safety law.

Even though the Kent bikes are Chinese, I do think most of their bikes are better than Huffys. Especially the aluminum frame ones like the La Jolla. Even name brand aluminum cruisers like Fujis don't weigh less, even if they are higher quality. I prefer single speed/coaster but I have seen that version, called the "Rockdale"

>>1042968
I mean the drag isn't too bad. Coaster brake hubs have a reputation for having more drag than freewheels, but it hasn't affected my pedaling efficiency.
>>
>>1043008
>>1043010
I actually meant "Rockvale". It might not actually be the same frame as your bike because the Rockvale is a hi-ten steel bike and weighs 35 lbs (which is still a lot less than people think cruiser bikes weigh).

>>
>>1043010
>>1043008
Oh, it's actually the "La Jolla", the 26" aluminum one with coaster brake. It only weighs 29 lbs, which I think is good for a cruiser that only costs $100 new.
>>
Lol I went to the skate park on the 29er cruiser. Didn't do anything too dumb, just rode up and down the quarter pipes. One of the times I went up I accidentally engaged the coaster brake and fell off. It was really fun though. There were no BMXers there either, only skateboards and little kids on scooters. It does grip pretty well with the 29x2.3 Geax Tattoo tires (wraparound tread like BMX tires)

I did buy one, it was a an ammaco. Chinese shit. I couldn't find a shwinn in the uk and importing one would cost more.

so I figured id just put parts together myself.

the first thing I did was strip it down, then put a tri fork on it.

I lost the peddle thing, but wanted a certain gear on it, and some teardrop pedals. that requires a solid bar thing, but they are completely different sizes, so I don't know if I can make the pedals work through some kind of adapter.

I bought a Columbia chain guard.

got some fat rims for thick brick tyres.
want to put internal hubs in them.

basically I want it to look low like a motorcycle.
but I just have a mess of parts I don't know if can even work... lel I am fail

if I was in usa id just get shwinn

Bloody China.

I actually now have >>1042769 and the guy bought the frame for it from america. It's just been pissing it down so I haven't posed on it yet.

I'd have a poke at this, but I don;t see what use I'd get out of it:

hmm I have thought more recently about adding a motor.

im quite into the board track racer look at the moment. pic related, based almost on the same kind of frame.

if one could buy that ebay bike for not much over whats its currently at, it would be fun to mess about with for sure.
>>
>>1044970
I saw his buy it now price before it was relisted and it was around £450.
>>
>>1044972
certainly wouldn't pay that, the motorized kits are only about £70, maybe less if u can find one used.

>>
How come no one does tricks or trials in cruiser bikes? There's hardly anything on YT
>>
>>1045205
That's like asking why nobody rally drives in a bus. because theyre not designed for that.
>>
>>1045209
People do trials on road bikes, downhill on unicycles, I don't see why anyone won't pop a few tricks on a cruiser.
>>
>>1045210
theyre just heavy, no suspension. it would be pretty awkward and uncomfortable to do.
not impossible, just I think the kind of people that are into that, wouldn't go buy a beach cruiser.

I rode mine at the skate park today on the quarter pipes. It isn't the most nimble turning bike. Cruisers are strong enough for tricks, but don't have the best setup for technical maneuvers. Mine's aluminum so the weight is not an issue.
>>
>>1045210
>>1045205
A small road frame with a sloping top tube and the seatpost low is actually quite similar to a trials bike, it just has bigger wheels, which is why skilled trials riders can do all their usual tricks on a "road" bike.

Cruiser bikes are much, much more difficult to ride tricks/technical features on because they have very long wheelbases, which makes it much more difficult to shift your center of gravity fore/backwards and also makes steering very slow

Question. How good are these bikes for converting to light off-road duty? Like, say this Raleigh, here. Could you make a light trail rider out of it? Obviously it needs to be rehabbed, but.
>>
>>1045257
for smooth gravel roads and paths they'll do fine, you don't even need to change any parts beyond making the bike safe and comfortable to operate.

>>
>>1045274
Most of those bikes came stock with tires at least 1.25"/30cm or wider, that's plenty big enough for hardpacked gravel. Not that there's any harm in going to a wider tire if you wanted to.

I don't know exactly what your logging roads are like, but for rural dirt roads and US forest service roads where I am 700x27 road tires do fine, 35mm cross tires with a little tread do fine on gravel fire access roads with steep sections. Nothing wrong with going wider though, you'll be even more comfortable that way.
>>
>>1045275
I want to try to do a tailwhip on mine but I think it would be hard because of the long wheelbase. At least it's a coaster brake so there is no cable tangling. It's surprisingly hard to even get off the ground since they roll over everything, just like a mountain bike.
>>
>>1045219
