Most of my cycling is touring and for that i absolutely want to avoid looking like a cyclist. On the other hand, given how much time i spend on the saddle, adequate clothing is extremely important. In the end i found that the best compromise is using cycling specific underwear with trekking pants and shirts. It offers excellent protection against UV, great breathability and fast drying. The only drawback is poor aerodynamics compared to skintight Lycra but that doesn't matter much at touring speeds.

its a pretty significant difference in speed but also in comfort (NO CHAFING) and also in body temp regulations, with mtb baggies, wind has the comodity of going under the pant sleeves and cooling you down when you dont want it, with lycra you can go short on temperatures when you would go 3/4 or long sleeve with baggies.

with higher speeds on a road bike, it isnt even comparable, you can be almost 15khm faster just by using proper clothes insted of fredding it out with baggies.

My ass hurts so much. I've never been on anything more sporty than a Wal-Mart BSO, and now if I go further than a half a mile at a time I kind of want to cut my ass off. I've heard it's easy enough to mix a set of cycling shorts with a plain cotton tee, and that's the route I'm going to go for the time being. I'm a 240 pound fatass and could not leave the house in full lycra and survive the embarrassment.
