Previous one is full, time for a new Post Your Bike Thread.
Here's my winter rig, got some bar mitts for Christmas and I'm really liking them so far. I still haven't put the studded tires on once yet this season, but I probably will need them for my commute on Thursday.
>>1038336
Looks good. what did you make your mudflap out of? I tried making one out of an old tube and it looks like hot garbage.
>>1038339
not him, but it looks like fenders that come with one
Dont have a good drive side picture. Both are mine, taken when I lent one to a friend the other day.
Left is a Boardman Road Sport basic bitch Claris equipped commuter, and slightly too tall for me but whatevet.
Right is a 2006 (?) Giant TCR1 with Campag Centaur. Recently swapped the shitty ergo bars for a compact drop set and it's amazing. Purchased second hand, largely in good condition and I've replaced the shitty parts. Thinking about changing out the fork for a new one though...theres too many scuffs on it for my full confidence.

Why have I been asked this twice now? No, I'm not a grill :)
>>1038475
Funnily enough my other bike is a CAADX just like that one, it's way too small for me though, my Tarmac is a 54 and the Cannondale is a 48. Was sort of in a rush to buy a cross bike for racing season and my LBS had these on sale, but the 48 was the largest size that I could still stand over without my balls being crushed.
>>1038489
nice nice I see you've put on decent tyres on yours
how do you find the brakes? it's the only thing i have upgraded (apart from the saddle and stem but those are not upgrades, that's just fitting)
also I had some issues (ie clicking noises) with the pressfit bottom bracket :( so watch out for that
other than that it's a pretty cool bike, it's taking my abuse (>90kg fat fuck rider, constant crashing because I like doing stupid things, etc) pretty well so far
it looks cute in size 48 btw lmao
>>1038493
Yeah, the brakes are pretty crappy- since I pretty much only use it for cross and the speeds never get very high they are okay, but the few times I have taken it on a regular road ride they were pretty terrible going downhill, the feel is crappy, but at least they work the same whether they are wet or dry.
Thankfully the bike is still quiet, but it only has <400 miles on it. I've crashed mine countless times, obviously cross crashes aren't terribly bad, but it's been put down a lot, and isn't any worse for wear functionally, although the shifters are all chewed up from when I took a fall on a paved section of a CX course. I'm actually in the process of selling it now- I enjoyed cross, but I just love riding my road bike so much more.
>>1038475
>>1038489
My brother just bought a CAADX. He's tried to be into mountain biking before, bought a lovely Devinci hardtail, rode it for a few years, then gave up and left his heavily upgraded expensive bike sitting outside in the sea air to get completely fucked. He has flirted with getting back into it but it just fizzles out.
I brought my road bike to visit this christmas and he got jealous and immediately bought one of those in the Christmas sales. It looks like such a nice bike, I really hope he keeps up at it so I can go riding with my bro.
Annoyingly he is way taller than me, so it's not like he can just give it to me if he quits the idea.
Just finished this up. Riser bars made a huge differnce. Also installed a brand new cassette. Feels good to mash and not skip, man

Probably around axle deep on flats, and even on a regular mtb.. as long as it's steep enough I can ride up to handlebar deep descending. This setup is a tank though can plow through almost anything and enough traction to lift the back wheel on packed snow.

Nice looking bike.
Surly Straggler fork, right? How do you like that Surly rack? The lower mounts seem like a really shitty design that will really limit the load capability.
Really like the wheel + tire combo. I've had nothing but good experiences with DTSwiss hubs and rims, and Compass tires are great - see >>1038604
Sprung for the Paul's levers but paired them with BB7s? C'mon, they're garbage. TRP Spyre or Paul's Clampers are so much nicer.
Finally, that's a handsome frame. At first glance, with that monostay/unicrown-fork rear end, I thought it was a Twinsix Standard Rando. Lugged main triangle with the welded monostay rear with breezer dropouts is... interesting. Huh. The threaded hole in the bottom of the monostay for mounting the fender is pretty slick. I would have stuck some brazeons in the back for a rear rack, but that's just me...
>>1039558
I'm going to tell you what I told you last time you posted this: I love ever silly detail on your bike: the drillium chainrings, the stem with the canti brake cable roller, the bullhorns with the proper levers, the vintage Suntour derailleurs. It's perfect. I want it.

I've used a few portour racks over the years and the 24-pack has been my favorite. I can't say much about the load capacity of it vs others as I only really carry small amounts of groceries on it, but being able to run it so low makes the ride feel really stable.
The Paul levers are a carry-over from the SS Cross Check I was riding, I didn't buy them for this build. I did buy the BB7s though, and I picked them up because I'm familiar with them and they were cheap as chips. You do know the Klamper is a BB7 clone, right?
Thanks all for the compliments, I'm really happy with how it turned out

>>1039674

>>1039663

>>1039687

>>1039671
Alright, now I'm interested - what makes the 24-pack your favorite? I've used a lot of portour racks as well. I currently have an older Cetma halfrack on my bike; the lower pannier bars are nice but I rarely use them and DAMN it's a heavy rack.
>You do know the Klamper is a BB7 clone, right?
I mean, only as much as any single-piston mech caliper is a "BB7 clone". FWIW, the action is smoother, pad adjustment is easier (I fucking hate the BB7 pad adjusters), and they're fully serviceable and rebuildable. That said, performance-wise they're only an incremental improvement; the only reason that I brought them up was your Paul levers.
But I *am* serious about the TRP Spyre/Spyke brakes. They're comparable in price to the BB7 and are so much better in every way.
>>1039670
Just you wait until the end of the month when I get fenders :^)
xD
>>1039718
>what makes the 24-pack your favorite?
It's lighter than the Cetma or Soma that I had before. It's super adjustable, and it doesn't mount to the front axle or the brake mount.
>BB7s
I guess it just boils down to personal preference. Would it help ease your mind if I mentioned I bought the set of BB7 calipers new in-box for about $100USD?
>>1039731
>$100 for shitty single piston calipers
You're an idiot. Should've flipped the stupid Paul levers to some gullible hipster and got some half decent hydros.
>>1039469
the bosses in the middle of your fork lugs crack me up
Just eyeballing it, is it even particularly low trail? (I don't know shit about 650 and im just guessing here). It's kind of a constructeur bike right? Couldn't you have more fork rake to make front loading more stable? I doubt you'd want to race crits on it or fang along at 50km/h so you don't need sharp handling.
Your pimped out utility bikes make me smile and the gotta go fast anal side to me grimace

>>1039731
>24-pack
Huh, maybe I'll check it out - one of my bikes has a Surly Troll fork with the midblade and upper eyelets that the 24-pack needs. It looks like it might play nice with a set of lowrider pannier racks.
The Cetma axle mount is really strong, but it definitely does make working on the front wheel a pain. I like the Pass&Stow rack but it's pricy.
>Would it help ease your mind if I mentioned I bought the set of BB7 calipers new in-box for about $100USD?
I mean, I don't really care - whatever floats your boat; the BB7 is a known quantity and if you're happy with it after all these years, you do you. But the Spyre brakes are better in pretty much every way and *cheaper* that the BB7 series as well. The nicest version of the TRP with the carbon fiber bits goes $90 or so. The ones without the carbon bits are $65.

>>1039737
Not the guy with that bike, but 99% sure that's a Surly Straggler fork: http://surlybikes.com/parts/forks/straggler_650b_fork
Those side-of-the-fork-crown threaded bosses are a real giveaway; I don't think I've seen them on any other fork.
In which case it's a pretty normal 44mm rake fork with moderate trail, instead of the 65-70mm of fork rake you'd see on a purpose-built low-trail 650B rando.
>>1039597
Campy on a cross bike oh yes
>>1039761
The elevated stay means you don't need to split the frame somewhere to install the belt.
On the other hand, EStay frames were known for being flexy and belt drives sometimes don't mix well with flexy rear ends - no sprung derailleur tensioning the thing means you can either throw the belt or snap the belt if the frame flex is bad enough.

>>1039624
I get it's a piece of shit and all, but I'm pretty curious about what the fuck is going on with that chain tensioner/rear derailleur?
It looks like a derailleur, but it's just being used as a tensioner for a single speed sprocket on the product? I'm confused.
>>1039978
It also has a grip shifter, however the cable seems to stop once it's gone under the top tube and seat tube junction. I think it may just be a mock up, the seat is shopped and the plate in the front triangle of the frame looks to be as well.
I must ask what all this tape is about.
>>1039977
Meh. It's not horrible looking, but would be better (less chunky) if you stretched the tape taut and used just enough to cover the stay.

>>1040707
>Do you think you cool cool all hunched forward resting your little bum on that dildo saddle
The traditional road cycling position ("hunched over") is more efficient for power transfer and actually a lot better for your back, shoulders and neck with a proper fit (and assuming you don't suffer preexisting problems in these areas) The increasingly narrow saddles are to give thigh-clearence for the more aggressive riding possession.
Who cares who's riding what to work? They're still enjoying riding a bike which is also that matters to me.
>>1040714
>calling suspension forks "shocks"
They're overkill for most American cities, but in the EU there are some god awful roads and plenty of cobble stones to make use of that front end suspension.

how do you like those bars?
I've been thinking about switching to a moustache bar on my commuter, they look pretty comfy
>>1040867
First, those aren't mustache bars, they're cruiser bars flipped upside down, so they'd full under the 'North Road' category. As for how they work, north road and mustache bars are a love/hate item - if you get them set up just right then they're great and offer multiple convenient riding positions, but the downside is that they're more complicated to fit than drop bars and you may find it extremely frustrating to get your fit correct with those kinds of bars. For instance, I can't use mustache bars, I like the shape but all the production models available end up being too wide for my shoulders.

>>1040966
Droppers are perhaps one of the least meme innovations in mountain biking in recent years. If you have the saddle at the ideal height for efficient pedalling it's going to be way too high for rough terrain and descending. Sure you can use a quick release clamp but it's not very convenient to have to stop and fiddle with the saddle height.

That's pretty meaningless, the difficulty of a double black can vary greatly. If it's all down hill then sure you can slam your seat and do it all standing up, and if if there's some climbing you can also do it standing up if it's short enough.

recommend replacing those tyres with something slicker

It needs bars with flatter ramps (the hoods should not be much lower than the bar tops). Running those oldschool track-esque bars with a steep drop down to the hoods, tilted up and with a high stem, is silly. Those bars are made for a very aggressive riding position. Don't slam your stem, but a quill that's taller than it is long looks terrible. The whole front end would stiffen up with a lower stem and more relax bars. I bet those bars are stupidly narrow too. Alternately, you could keep your stem height, run bars with flat ramps, tilt them up, and just have less saddle- hoods drop. That would be better for very short, or very long rides.
Is that 8 speed sachs? Get some ergos.
Is that a half step triple? Run half step triple rings, they're awesome. If not, it atleast looks like that inner bcd could take a smaller small ring, which would be nice. You could get a closer cassette/ freewheel if you had a triple/ a smaller inner ring.
Get some new cartridge brake pads. That old shit you have is dangerous.
Get some tires that aren't $10 junk. Tires are fucking important. Again, dangerous.
Get pedals which don't have awful big ridges. Your pedals are designed for use with oldschool cycling shoes with cleats and they cut into regular shoes making hotspots on your feet. Get nice leather straps and metal toe cages. Or clipless. Or plastic bmx platforms.
I really don't like your saddle or post.
I love the british racing green paint the rear mech and the wheels.
The frame is too small for you.

Oh wow, thanks for the input! It is far more thorough than I hoped for!
Honestly, I got tricked into buying this bike when I didn't know any better. It used to be a Peugeot Performance 100 painted as a counterfeit F.Moser. When I found out it isn't an Italian classic, I decided to sand-blast the whole thing and powder-coat it in British racing green. This is why the bike is called Skandal (Polish for Scandal).
I agree the bars aren't the best, just what came with the bike (some old ITM pipe), awaiting suitable replacement. Any steps with the bars are laboursome, since that is a DIY stitched leather wrap.
Since the picture was taken, I've replaced the brake levers with Ultegra 6500 brifters, along with Ultegra 53/39 chainset. I've also replaced the brakes for Miche Performance long-drops with cartridge Dura-Ace inserts.
The choice of tires is very limited since I wanted tan sides. The only other option at the time was a set of Schwalbe Luganos, which are even more shitty than those Michelin Dynamics. Some Continental GP 4000IIs are on the upgrade list since they are available with transparent (tan) sides.
Pedals have since been upgraded (?) to PD520 clipless.
The saddle is whatever came with the bike, just wrapped in the same leather as the bars. It is comfortable and I've no intent to change it. The seatpost on the other hand is a real pain. Those old Peugeots had a non-standard seat tube diameter of 23mm. The only seatpost that thin is some generic Decathlon shit, no other models available. It replaced a custom made (turned on a lathe!) pipe with a clamp taken from a Dutch omafiets!
Your criticism is much appreciated, thank you. It also showed me that I really need an updated photo!

Thanks!

what's with your shifter?
>>1041226
Keep an eye on /pybt/ over the next month or so. I'm gonna change the stem, bartape, saddle, and add fenders all in the next month. I'll hi-res then.
>>1041271
It was a part time affair that never had more than one shift a week, and the shift wasn't even a full day. Is it that unbelievable?
>>1038336
holy shit that looks stupid
>>1041284
>shift up
>get hand caught in wheel
>>1041284
Nothing. It just looks like it overlaps with the tire from this perspective. They've been upgraded to STIs anyway.
>>1041339
Make bar ends great again
>>1041351
The point is DT shifters should never go down past the DT
>>1041194
As long as you've spent the night there it's fine. That bike looks fun, local trails?
>>1041372
Why not? Their range of motion allows it. I'm genuinely curious, is there any obvious disadvantage to using them this way?
>>1041405
They can interfere with the wheel (more likely if you have fenders) and it makes them harder to reach. There shouldn't be any need to have them go that low, I think they're actually meant to have a hard stop that prevents them going past the downtube.

I used to ride a German-style (flat bar + suspension fork) touring/cross bike as a daily commuter for the past 4 years and, while it saved my face twice when I rode up a curb/debris without noticing, it didn't work all that well on shitty roads that were (and still are) majority of what I had to ride on. The problem was, it did carry all the vibrations directly into my wrists and that was really fucking tiring.

You can stand and pedal just fine without bar ends. The point of bar ends is to have a secondary hand position for comfort, and unless the guy that rides that bike is also twice as wide as the average man those bar ends are too far apart to be comfortable for anything other than short bursts.
Those bars are wide enough that he could put some horns inboard of the brakes for a much more comfortable cruising position, then switch to the grips when the extra leverage is needed.
>>1041719
Damn really? post pics.
>>1041265
Best move here is selling it. It's worth probably $150 on craigslist if it is shifting and stopping properly, and the drivetrain isn't rusted
But upgrades will cost you more than the bike itself is worth. instead, sell and use the money to upgrade a more worthy bike

Most likely story - Some vagrant stole a college kid's bike, and was too inebriated to figure out how to take off a Ulock, and ditches it in the woods. Gonna take it to the university police just to say that I did the right thing mangs
>>1042133
More like you have no idea what you're doing
Why not just ride the bike with the fork un-fucked instead of detracting from it's practicality?
>>1042199
>no idea what im doing
lol, it works exactly how i thought and planned it to work
since it's an MTB, i felt like i was sitting way too far up with it stock and wanted to be more "forward" on the bike. its my winter commuter so it's not like i need that front suspension that much anyways since im mostly just on roads/paved trails
>>1041936
Leominster DSG?
sorry for the bad quality
>>1042269

>>1042232
Why do you keep the fork, then? Now its just a super heavy (and ugly) rigid fork.
A picture from this morning at the end of my commute. Weather's nice today.

I've locked it there 5 days a week for over a year now, and it hasn't disappeared yet. I even keep spare tubes, a multitool, and sometimes snacks in the panniers and I've never had anything go missing from inside them. Sorry you live in a shitty town.
>>1042310
I use a U-lock and cable, with another cable lock looped through the saddle. If I'm somewhere sketchy or it's late, I have a second U-lock.
>>1042314
I've spent a long time riding crappy bikes, and wanted to own a nice one.

i said in a previous post that i wanted a rigid fork/more aggressive positioning/geo but i just didnt want to send any more money on it
My "new" Dunelt. Need to replace the 3-speed hub's indicator spindle so I can actually change the gears, but other than that the bike is pretty much complete.
It's even older than the seller thought, too. The bike license initially dated the thing to 1963, but it has a Hercules rear hub and a different fork. I think this bike was from before Dunelt was bought out by Raleigh in 1960.
how are you liking my carpenter?

After talking to the dudes on BikeForum who know English 3-speeds, they've said that a lot of the stuff on the bike is from after Raleigh bought them out so it was probably made in 1963. But it also has a lot of stuff from Birmingham-made bikes on it, so it looks like it was a factory-made parts bin special.
>>1041194
Could you carry at that camping gear on your bike?
>>1041141
fork looks kind of ugly.
but just my opinion.
Folding bike from Amazon, only cost about $150
>>1043242
>stolen toolbox
I fear this more than stolen bike
>>1043380
Now we just have to wait for your teeth and bones to be broken
>>1043395
It's sturdy as hell and I can go pretty fast on it because of the high gearing. Only problem is that it's kind of heavy.
>>1043414
I have a foldable BSO that cost me 200 and I have carried many times 25-30kg loads on it. I have been using that bike for short commuting several days per week during years. They sure look fragile, but they are pretty strong, mine has 20' wheels.
>>1043442
>20' wheels
>gentlemen
>>1043475
Eyyyy Raleigh 3-speed bro.
>>1043475
very, very nice.
the absence of a 3-speed hub is troubling. not seeing the chain thing/cable on the hub or a shifter. odd that a model called "Tourist" would not only not have the gearing Raleigh is most famous for, but be a single speed.
tell me I'm missing something.
still, a slamming ride.
>>1043462
>>1043414
Only weird thing is the unusually tight steering. I swerve a bit more since all my other daily rider bikes are 29ers or 700c road or hybrid bikes.
>>1043462
This. The seatpost or steerer could be flimsy. The frame is hi-ten steel, but very thick, so it should be still pretty strong.
>>1043454
Anything smaller than 20" is a no go for me, since it has to have some off roading ability. Having BMX sized wheels is perfectly fine with adequate gearing.
>>1043414
Wouldn't trust anything other than Dahon or Bromptons.
>>1043502

>>1043502
Yes, took the picture on a test ride. I was still fiddling with the hub. It is, I'm fact, a three speed and the cable and shifter is now on the bike.
Picked this one up for cheap on CL
>>1043568
>It is, I'm fact, a three speed and the cable and shifter is now on the bike.

so cool looking. They weigh fifty pounds, though, amiright?
