Both piles of junk symbolise the sorry state of our railways.

They still exist purely as a result of greedy, idiotic, and corrupt companies allowed to form by stupid, short term thinking, and equally corrupt governments.

I cannot wait for the day old BR DMUs along with those damn Pacers are subjected to the cutters torch.

The fuck?

Some of the late BR DMUs (Sprinter and Networker classes) and late EMUs (319, 320, 321, 322 and ) are actually pretty good, they're not perfect on the inside but they're well built and reliable. They were decent efforts at minimalistic, but reliable multiple units.

That said, the newer ones are better both to ride and look at (pic related is top draw for a post-BR DMU), that's been the only positive from privatisation. Would like to see franchises re-nationalised again now they've sorted the quality of their rolling stock out.

But yeah I'm gonna celebrate when the Pacers get rekt, they're a fucking abortion of a 'train' and it's going to be literally fappable-tier if someone gets footage of them being smashed up and cut up. I want to get together a crowdfunding effort to buy a 141 as scrap just to blow it up and chuck some fireworks in.

Don't get why people were so obsessed with preserving 101s and 121s and the old third rail EMUs though, they were shit and looked shit.

BR made great EMUs which I do not have a problem with. I like them better than a lot of the modern crap trains. For example the London Overground class 317s are comfy as fuck, have opening windows, and feel and sound great.

However those short DMUs are pathetic pieces of crap which should have been scrapped a long time ago. The Turbostars are quite comfy though.

>old BR DMUs

*Old* BR DMU's are great though.
>>
>>1036079

They're not that bad, it's just Pacers that are the problem, they're fucking atrocious for ride quality. I used 158s a lot at uni and they weren't that bad. Need work doing on the insides cause they're a bit neglected but they're a decent ride quality and reliable short-range DMUs. Turbostars are better, but there's no reason to get rid of 158s and the other good Sprinter-class ones yet. It's like with some of the BR-built EMUs now they've been re-built like the 321s, they're great with a bit of modernising.

>>1036094

They were shit.

I can just about remember going on one of them on the Bedford-Bletchley line a few times when as a kid and they were uncomfortable AF. Look pretty shit too compared to later DMUs. Not Pacer-tier shit, but just not good.

That said, try going on the Isle of Wight line, that has to be the most comfortable ride in the country. Literally bouncing all over the fucking shop most of the route.

Correction there, some of the 158s are getting re-built now by Arriva and GWR.

Noticeable improvement on what they were like before, now as good as any smaller modern DMU.

The Varsity Line in a Derby Lightweight? How old _are_ you?
>>
>>1036108
What are the white ear looking things on the seats?
>>
Im probably going to miss the pacers when they go, rides on them were always entertaining, especially at places like crows nest and almost anywhere along the Wigan-Southport line before they replaced the rails
>>
>>1035971
156s are as rickety as an old leyland bus, 158s are pretty comfy and quiet.
>>
>>1036129

Probably not exactly then. They looked something like that and were in NSE colours at the time. Probably actually 101s, 117s or something newer. Whatever was running on it in the mid 90s.

>>1036131

Handles. They seem to do them like that everywhere now. Look the same as the ones on Pendolinos, if not a bit more exaggerated in shape.
>>
Well at least you can look forward to getting the Vivarail D Train to replace Pacers.
To be honest I'm not sure if they will be any better, the district line was always incredibly uncomfortable, slow, and jolty. Now you will have ford Transit engines bolted underneath your seat. Rail in the UK truly is a joke.

Don't care, as long as it's not a fucking Pacer

OP here

they were shit, but better than these...

the 170s are more comfortable though aye
any ideas what's going to get the retb for the west highland line?
>>
I know how to fix the pacer issue.
>Form new TOC
>Buy up 37s, 47s, 67s, and Mk3 coaches
>Replace all Pacer services with 2-5 coach loco hauled sets
>Monitor crowding and add or remove coaches to accommodate for it
>Don't waste all the passengers fare money on overpriced foreign rolling stock contracts, yet still deliver capacity and value
>>
>>1036143
Wouldn't handles be better if they were hollow in the middle so there's something you can hold on to?
>>
>>1035980
Both class 156 and 158 predate privatisation.
>>
>>1037490
And privatisation still uses them. Privatisation was 1993.
>>
>>1036549
maybe to start with on some lines yeah but not exclusively, new rolling stock needs to be made plus there's way more electrified lines now that should be made use of
