Is it possible to equip a Q400 with a giant set of floats? It would be quite a hop up from a Twin Otter but I think it would be practical given the plane's incredible STOL performance. The applications for passenger travel as well as maritime search and rescue would be enough of an incentive.

Funny, I heard Burt Rutan say pretty much the exact opposite during the 2015 WSPA fly-in. Something to the effect of "when you look at it, you wish you had a paper bag to throw up in."

Not that I agree with that reaction... But of course, Rutan's very much a function-over-form type of engineer, so I could see how he might find a machine that very clearly compromises function for the sake of form to be visually revulsive.
