Where is this from? I really wish that I could get some stable snow for the whole of winter, but so far that has not been the case.
My baiku, the paranoid winter darkness edition.
New rotors and now my brakes don't squeal anymore, and being floating rotors hopefully they won't rub as much when they heat up.
Funny how they're a closer colour match to the pedals than the rims despite the rims and pedals being from the same manufacturer, headset is also from a different company and still a better match.

Eh, it's working fine I guess? It's cuts out some of the pedal bob while climbing, but it's still very noticeable (at least relative to my hardtail).
But the bike is light as fuck and really nimble. Bought it from a guy off Craigslist two years ago for $1k, which was a steal. It's my first fully-suspended mountain bike, good mix of XT/XTR/SRAM X.0 with a good ol' 3x9 gearing setup. Couldn't be happier.

>>1033418
Are those HED jet 5s? How do u like them man?
>>1033834
Didn't have an MTB cassette with a carrier at the time (alloy freehub body), plus it's only 8 speed and I like like small steps (inb4 'dirt roadie pls go'). I'll be using it for a longer range bikepacking trip in the winter, going with an 11-34 out back and keeping the 32/22 up front so I have a bailout, Just in case.
>>1033844
>8-speed
>11-34
>Like small steps
Wait, what?
Do you have a tighter cassette on their right now, and you're going to put an 11-34 on in the future? Because I'm not familiar with any 11-34 8-speed cassette, and if one existed, if would have bonkers large gaps between gears. Maaaaybe Shimano made a low-end "MEGARANGE" cassette like that for shit department store bikes with a giant gap between gear 7 and 8? AFAIK with the old 8-speed XT and XTR, you could get 11-28, 11-30, and 12-32. 11-32 and 11-34 didn't really become a thing until the 9-speed era.
I'm going to be biking from Alaska to Argentina in two years. Help me build my bike, /n/.
Should I make my own thread?
>>1033853
Right now I have a 12-28, putting on a CS-HG31 11-34 (midrange) when it gets delivered. I have one on another bike, the gaps are pretty big, but consistent so it's liveable. Maybe I'll go 1x10 with an 11-36 in the future, but for now 2x8 is great. It's more than enough range, and it's cheap as fuck to maintain ($7 chains, fuck yeah).
Here's the cassette (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/mobile/us/en/shimano-altus-hg31-8-speed-mtb-cassette/rp-prod120026?gs=1&gclid=CLKN6oXs8tACFc-CswodE1ICuw&gclsrc=aw.ds)
>>1033863
Yeah, I'm actually running an 11-28 8-speed and 50/34 rings on my commuter right now, which is great. I'm debating turning it back into a hardtail MTB, in which case it will get 46/34/24 rings and either a 12-32 8-speed or 11-32 9-speed cassette.
>CS-HG31-8
>11-13-15-17-20-23-26-34
Huh, like a 9-speed 11-34 that they ripped the 8th gear (30T) out of. I guess if you're just using the low end as a bailout gear, that 31% gap between the 26 and 34 might not be too awful...

Velo Orange Dajia Far/Origin 8 Gary Ergo Sweep/Satori Boondocks. Satori is the OEM, they're all the same bar.
I've used the Salsa Cowchipper on a MTB conversion before, which worked really well.
I've been meaning to give the Ritchey Venturemax a try. I really like the looks overall - the slight backsweep on the tops, the round & open hooks, the shallow drop with the drops nearly parallel to the tops... I wish it had more sweep in the drops in addition to the flare at the hooks. And I'm not sure how I feel about those ergo bulges in general. I did NOT like the old Salsa Bell Lap bars...

>>1034695
CETMA and Pass&Stow both sell similar front racks.
Lane (CETMA) used to sell both narrower and wider racks, but currently only sells the relatively square 5-rail racks. Matt (P&S) bas been teasing a rear rack and a narrow front rack for months now, but I don't think they're available yet.
I have both. Lane's racks are heavier and less convenient to mount - the axle mount makes patching a tube a fuckin' pain. Matt's racks are much more expensive, but you get what you pay for - the rack is way lighter, and much more convenient to work with.
> i feel like it may hinder my vision just a little bit looking down my cockpit.
I keep seeing people complain that they don't like the idea of a front platform rack because it'll block their view of the front tire, but I've never heard this complaint from someone who actually *uses* one. It's pretty good but could be much better, a few things I noticed:
-There's not really any difference between street and dirt jump MTBs other than perhaps the tyre choice, either can have suspension on the front or not
-Trail, AM/Enduro, and Freeride MTBs are basically the same, they're really just mid to long travel full sussers
-Beam frame bikes can be either road or TT, I don't know why it's even on there when it's as meaningful as saying "double diamond"
-No flat bar road bikes
-No idea what the text says above the fixie, if it's actually used on a track then it would be considered a track bike, if not then it's a road bike (that happens to be single speed and fixed). Also pretty much any bike can be fixed, the term only refers to the drive train
fa/tg/uy here, this are the bikes I have
A wooden balance bike, 8" wheels and Cars stickers
And my Trek 800 sport (no meme bike just poorfag, it was for $85 USD, I had the plan to buy a nicer bike but my son got sick and the hospital bill said otherwise)it have Shimano sis components and lots of dirt, steel rims, and cantilever brakes, it's not the best bike but I like it full rigid feels more fun actually.
So besides change the rims and brakes is there anything worth upgrade? Did just leave as is and make a beater and get myself a better bike?
>>1034851
Left it on to perform it's purpose, which is to keep debris out of the sprocket. Last time I went cross country riding I got a bunch of grass tangled up in my sprocket and the chain kept hopping till I could pull it all out of there.
>>1034919
No, its purpose is to stop the chain getting caught between the spokes and cassette due to a poorly adjusted derailer. It's a sign of someone who doesn't have faith in their own ability to setup their bike correctly.

A flat bar road bike and a "hybrid" are not the same thing, the geometry is different and "hybrids" tend to have short travel suspension forks as shown in that image, some also having much larger tyres and sometimes smaller wheels (being closer to mountain bikes).
Flat bar road bikes are the same as drop bar road bikes but with a slightly longer top tube.
>>1034990
Hybrids are often rigid.
Reposting, i guess.
There was a week at the beginning of november where we got a good amount of snow, but then all pretty much disappeared.
>>1035096
"Hybrids" can be many things, it's a shitty and very broad term. If you try and nail it down then they're an actual hybrid of a mountain bike and a road bike and that usually means a suspension fork. A "hybrid" and a flat bar road bike are very different things.
>>1035151
Mtbs can be rigid and road bikes are rigid so actually a hybrid makes more sense to be rigid, with geo kinda like cx but a little slacker, and 30-45mm tires. But I'm just arguing semantics, I'm not denying that suspension hybrids are indeed hybrids.
I completely agree that fbrs are not hybrids.
And yes hybrid is way too broad of a term. Some hybrids (the rigid sporty type like Dew, FX, Sirrus, etc) are awesome bikes. Others (the "comfort"/cruiser type) are pure shit.
>>1035171
I can't tell the difference between god tier hybrids and flat bar road bikes.
>>1035175
The god tier hybrid is going to have slacker geo, clearance for wider tyres and probably mounting points for hardware like fenders/rack that a FBRB might not have.
Dick breaks too unless it's super entry level these days.
>>1035175
There isn't one.
>>1035177
The only thing of those that would distinguish a road bike is the geo, and that's really subtle. Hell, roadbikes even have dick brakes in this year of our lord MMXVI
>>1035175
The difference is that the person riding the fbr feels somehow shamed if he admits that he rides a hybrid.
does /pybt/ have any dank stickers on their helmet/bike that they can post?
>>1035195
>>1035214
That's not the issue, the issue is that calling anything a hybrid lacks clarity. It could be a department store town bike or a flat bar road bike, or anything in between. By all means call a flat bar road bike a hybrid if it makes you happy but it just makes you look like an idiot.
>>1035217
>it could be a department store town bike or a flat bar road bike, or anything in between
And they would all fit the bill, because they all have roughly the same geometry and roughly the same configuration of components such that they can be distinguished as a group from other kinds of bikes that are more specialized in purpose.
It doesn't matter that some are higher quality than others. "Road bike" can refer to anything from a Denali to a Venge, too, but it's perfectly clear that they're both still road bikes.
If anything, it's "flat-bar road bike" that's imprecise and misleading, as they are *not* just road bikes with different handlebars. They're just hybrids, with thinner wheels and more aggressive groupsets.
It's a way of configuring a hybrid, not a way of configuring a road bike.
>>1035216

>>1035276

Still hosed it off tho, it can really slow down the drivetrain.
>>1035253
>And they would all fit the bill, because they all have roughly the same geometry and roughly the same configuration of components
Not even close.
>If anything, it's "flat-bar road bike" that's imprecise and misleading, as they are *not* just road bikes with different handlebars
They have longer top tubes to compensate for the handlebars having less reach, other than that they're very similar to drop bar road bikes (geometry and components).
>>1035285
>They have longer top tubes to compensate for the handlebars having less reach
Why would anyone want this? I don't understand.
>>1035272

all that build-up on your BB, crank, and seat tube is because you didn't hang 3 inches of random material off your front fender
>>1035302
Thanks for the tip. It seems like some of it is also due to spray making its way around the outside after snow buildup inside. That's worth a shot tho.
>>1035303
then your fenders are too close to the tire and / or too narrow.
slim fenders close to the tire look nice but sacrifice function to form to some extent.

>Thanks for the tip.
no prob, bro.
>It seems like some of it is also due to spray making its way around the outside after snow buildup inside.
I mean, yeah, that too. but look where the build-up starts on the downtube: it's right in a line with where the spray gets stopped by the fender.
with new wheels and brakes
>>1035295
What's so hard to understand? Drop bars have more reach, if you just swapped to flat bars you'd have a more upright riding position so making the top tube longer makes up for this to give you similar positioning to being in the hoods of drop bars.
>>1035350
>so making the top tube longer makes up for this to give you similar positioning to being in the hoods of drop bars.

It's ok to be casual about riding, dude. It's not ok to be a douche about it.
>>1035393
Apart from the longer top tube a flat bar road bike and a drop bar road bike are very similar in geometry (in fact you could find many models with identical geometry) and components. The other types of "hybrids" are the ones that differ in geometry and components, both compared to road bikes (drop or flat bar) and to each other.
>>1035393
>can't stand the ego-blow of acknowledging that he doesn't ride a road bike
I own exactly one flat bar bike out of four. It's my mountainbike. You have no idea what you're talking about, fucktard.
If you're going to question self-evident shit that your average five year old understands you really need to provide a list of your most major malfunctions. >>1035745
looks very nice
>>1035842
how can you say it needs a shorter stem if you don't know how tall anon is?
>>1035856
Isn't stem length more about handling than fit? (on mtb at least) Far as I know the trend in recent years has been wide bars, short stems and slack geometries.
Need to take some new pictures. Been riding the MTB and garbage commuter too much since the cold started.
>>1035813
Lucky you, I don't get my bike until next week.
>>1035842
I don't want a dropper post, because it useless in cc racing. With 660mm flatbar and 80mm stem it handles very nice. I'm not sure that I needs wider bar on this bike, but will try.
>>1035860
That is a beautiful stem.
creepin' never sleepin' duckin' and divin' as I do my ride
>>1035859
But the trend is also accompanied by new frames having longer top tubes. If you have an older frame it might feel to small with a super short stem and vice versa. Handling/feel is the reason of the trend, but you can't simply put a short stem on any old bike and call it a day.
>>1035929
A shorter stem isn't going to compromise fit too much (compared to a road bike for example) and your body position varies a lot on a mountain bike, but it can have a large effect on how the bike feels to steer.
I bought this thing for 20€ put some new tires on that I had around and I have way to much fun with this.
when I bought it it was rattlecanned black completly.
I have it at my mas place , the next time I'm there I'll tune up the gears.
It also need some new rims, those are worn pretty bad.
>>1035938
So you removed the black paint and the original livery was still under there? Awesome
>>1035939
yeah , I was super satisfying.
the paint is nice and in good shape.
the whole bike is quite allright , black 7sp lx group tange cromo mtb tubes.
tha's wuite allright for 20€
I used cheap nailpolish remover with aceton to remove the paint
>>1035940
It's lovely indeed. You should treat it to some new bar grips too.
>>1035943
yea definitly.
I'll probably ebay some stuff.
the saddle is weirdly comfy but I think I`ll get something new
>>1035940
>7sp lx group tange cromo mtb tubes.
ya done good. she will serve you well.
>>1035870
>I don't want a dropper post, because it useless in cc racing.
Then why are the UCI pro XC riders starting to use them?
>With 660mm flatbar and 80mm stem it handles very nice.
Yikes. Sounds like a twitchy nightmare. Most XC bikes are running 700+ now.
>>1033245
What bike is that?
>>1036036
Specialized AWOL
>>1035994
I`m absolutly with you on modern stuff and I would say shorter stem and wider bars are worth considering.
but where would that dropper post drop to with that seattube.
>>1034915
that`s a nice bike for a good price.
I'd say fix up your son and then fix the bike up a bit.
maybe pass it on to him when he's older as those things hardly ever break

>>1035974
Yeah, the higher-end M730/732/735 Deore XT stuff was great and is easy to find nowadays, but the black enamel finish on the M560/563/565 Deore LX stuff just makes me go HNNNNNGGGG for some reason.

Is that fork crashed? Looks like tight gapz with the downtube. May just be the angle.

>>1036306
>Does this bike have >700c wheels? It looks huge for some reason.
probably old school 27" wheels. common on mid/low tier frames up to the late 80s, maybe even high tier stuff from earlier.
>>1036306
>how well do those straps on the top hold things?
Not the same guy, but I have a setup kinda like that and the straps work great, I've never really had anything slip out
If you want extra security, a bungee over the top never hurts
Not sure if I should buy knobbies or not. I go out of my way to ride off road all the time but I feel like they would slow me down too much on the road.
>>1036348
Unless you do a lot of mud or sand those kinds of tyres are fine, just make sure they're not pumped up too hard.
>>1036348
Stick with what you have
>>1036270
Switch your tires around... Aspens are sketchy up front. The faster tire should go in the back.
>>1036306
They work fine for lightweight stuff. I have a thermal base layer and a windbreaker strapped on in the pic, they held on fine, even on singletrack.
>>1036362
Thanks mate, will do.
Little project im working on. Lower-end Marin Tange 2 steel...... had some shitty 200LX stuff on it I've beefed it up to Deore LX. Almost have all the parts to make it work.

I like how the seatpost is a perfect match for the chrome on the fork. Is it a stripped and polished campy post?
Finished building this today. 2015 Brodie Romax SS. Limited edition frame colour for the SSCXWC in Victoria. Couldn't get a colour-matched fork but I think I like it better with the black fork. Studded tires for commuting (fenders not mounted yet). Now I can race the morning and afternoon races next CX season!
>>1036822
Is that an eccentric BB?
>>1036834
It is. It's a bit of a pain in the ass... I'd have preferred horizontal dropouts but I don't think the Romax SS frame is actually materially different from the geared Romax frame so I guess I can see why they wouldn't have wanted to put different dropouts on.
>>1036835
Eh, at least those dropouts look really nice.
>>1036835
At least you don't have to faff about aligning the wheel when replacing it, which would be even more of a pain with disc brakes. Is that a split seatstay? If it's designed to be able to run a belt that'd be another reason for the vertical dropouts and eccentric BB.
>>1036846
No split seat stay. Didn't think about wheel alignment... good point there.
>>1036846
>disk brakes
>horizontal dropout
yeah, they did the right thing there, getting the position right for disks is a PITA when you have horizontal dropout

>>1037031
You're on the right track, but like other anon says I won't think your bike is cool/special until you actually modify it (more than just swapping out tires, and the saddle?). Right now it's just a stock Rockhooper with slick tires.
>>1036422
The rack is by gamoh. Idk what the frame is, it only says Bianchi Edordo. Probs from the 80's, its got sweet chrome suntour dropouts.

Did you set your rotors on fire?
Seriously, douse them in rubbing alcohol and apply a match.
It burns off the contaminates.
My first suspension bike.
I still have it after building it in 2000. It rides ... awful. Especially after the two newer suspension bikes I've bought/built.
Still a kick for the nostalgia.
>>1037091
I've had good luck on other bikes sanding the discs and then fitting new pads but with this particular combination of parts they were just prone to squealing, not from contamination. The front still squeals a little bit if I really yank on it but it's bearable.
>>1037091
>Set your rotors on fire
>It burns off the contaminates
...Seriously? That's completely unnecessary, and not very effective. Rubbing alcohol doesn't burn very hot, and you're assuming the contaminants are both flammable and won't leave residue behind. Alcohol is useful as a *solvent*, not for burninating.
If you're having issues with discs and suspect contamination:
1) Remove the discs and pads
2) Scrub both the disc and braking surface of the pads with scotchbrite or lightly sand with high-grit sandpaper. Take care not to bend the brake rotor or introduce other contaminants
3) Wipe down again with IPA
4) Wipe down with a clean, dry paper towel and re-install.

Ask at your LBS.
It works, m8.
>>1036602
I've got a '93 Marin Muirwoods that I just finished converting to fixed using an NOS Surly Fixxer, and cut the stock axle short a-la Sheldon Brown to allow for tension adjustment with the vertical dropouts.
>>1037110
You cut the actual axle in the hub flush with the locknuts? That's a very dumb idea and you'll probably end up bending the skewer. Should've used a ghost ring or a fixed (not sprung) tensioner. Or you could've just kept it freewheel, not like there's any purpose or advantage to fixed.
where are my fellow ronin
Trying dirt drops out for bit. So far so good
>>1037117
It has worked for over 3000 off-road miles on my 29er, no issues. I use the old-style, beefy enclosed cam Shimano skewers, and carry a spare just in case.
No tensioners are beefy enough for fixed use, and I've had issues with ghost rings popping out and/or buckling/twisting, at least on my tallbike.
>not like there's any purpose or advantage to fixed
Uh, yeah there is... it's called fun. Makes riding the same old trails new and exciting.

>>1037110

that said I`d have 1xed it.
>>1037126
Why did you put "cunt" on your bike
>>1037202
I wanted to, but the derailleur hanger is fucked (pulled back, and quite twisted). 30 mins with a DAG and a new derailleur and it still won't shift right at all.
It's a nice Tange double butted frame, pretty light and comfy.
>>1037126
Looks great, what model bars are you using and do you like the shape? I'm running Salsa Bell Lap bars on my CX bike and it took me a long time to figure out how to get them rotated to get the anatomic bump in just the right place for my hands.
>>1037222
Ive got the exact same bars on it right now, they came off a torelli cx that i used to have a few years back. A buddy of mine gave me the 8spd sti shifters so i dug these bars out of the bin. Honestly the drops are a little too deep for the stem thats on it at the moment and im thinking about trying out a pair of soma clarence bars that i just came up on
Stock photo- mine is exactly the same, too fucking cold to go outside.

DESU I am happy at how it rides, and it looks better than the other bikes in the price range.
>>1037260
It's the bicycle equivalent of this. You should feel bad.
Can someone tell me whether I should buy this bike for $700? The guy at the pawn shop says "the bike is a 2012 superX 3 carbon with upgraded brakes. I'm guessing market value on the bike is around $1200 or so. It's a cyclecross bike so it has a bit wider tires than the typical road bike."
>>1037268
If it's in good shape and you want a cx bike then yeah.
>>1037267
IMO still better than a regular econobike
>>1037268
Not a terrible deal. Mavic wheels have a funky freehub body design, but if she's in good condition wear-wise, in your size and you fancy a CX it's a fair price I'd say. Yes, mini-V is most likely an upgrade in all but mud clearance.
First-gen Shimano tenspeed is a bit of a bitch, but not a deal breaker. And Cannondale is always Cannondale.
Compare; is it exactly what you want, and what would what you want cost you new - online or in store. And what would a similar bike cost you, new.
>>1037272
That's not first gen 10-sp. It's second gen.
>>1037273
From 2012? No, then it's still the old wire pull ratio. Or are you counting getting the wires under the tape as a whole generation? That's what seriously fucked up the long (and sometimes short) term performance of the first gen tenspeed system.
>>1037277
7800, 6600, 5600 was first gen 10-sp. 7900, 6700, 5700 is second. This bike has 6700.
I've never had any problems with my 5700 set.
>>1037280
>7800, 6600, 5600 was first gen 10-sp. 7900, 6700, 5700 is second.
Well, no. Those are mechanically compatible and only the cable routing has changed. New model, sure, but it's the same shifting system. Just like Dyna-Sys is Dyna-Sys, no matter the model year of the kit.
>>1037282
We're using the generation term differently then.

>>1037524
Shit. That hadn't even occurred to me. I do need gears though since I live in a hilly area. Maybe I can get an Alfine 11-speed with a belt gear laced to a 26" clincher rim.
>>1037531
Ideally you'd still need an eccentric bottom bracket to tension the belt, although you may be able to rig up some sort of fixed pulley tensioner. There's also the chance that the chainstay wouldn't clear the belt. Finally if you need that large a gear range and actually use that granny ring an Alfine 11 isn't going to work for you.

>>1037605
at high speeds there is an aerodynamic benefit, but your bike isn't designed to go that fast. Like most of the stuff on your bike, it's there for show; to look modern so it sells. Your suspension is another thing like that. if there are dials to dampen or lock them rigid, I recommend you do so while road riding.
