I like buses, and I want to take photos of them. But I don't want to be seen as a bus spotter because of the strange looks from people and even drivers. I don't know what to do at this point. It's painful having a hobby which is so looked down at.

>It's painful having a hobby which is so looked down at.

I know what you mean.
>>
If you get a decent looking camera people will just think you're a photographer and won't give it a second thought.
>>
I take photos of them as well as trains and planes and I don't care about what people may think
>>
>>1029883
Good luck you don't have to care.
In Eastern Europe, it's much harder, because some operators don't really support taking photos freely...
>>
Move to Japan. They don't mind transport otakus.
>>
>>1029873
I live in a tourist area. Taking pictures is common. Nobody cares.

It's easier to say than to do it. The public is very hostile for some reason and it sucks away the enjoyment due to the anxiety I get from it.

What? I never ever had a major problem taking bus pictures anywhere on the east or west. You can spot some mad drivers from time to time but that happens very rarely.

From what I read the most problematic place on the Earth for taking bus and train pictures is the US of A, because 1) dangerous neighbourhoods and 2) cops that see terrurists everywhere

>>1029873
Just get a proper camera and YOLO. People give you strange looks because of your greasy hair and baggy pants not because of what you're doing.
>>
>>1029873
Act like a professional photographer instead of an otaku.
>>
>>1029873

this is the reason i go to quiet areas, to be fair it has some advantages, riding my bike around to find quiet areas by main roads and railways ive found some really nice places to sit all afternoon, especially over summer, and spot buses, trucks and trains, some places i can get all 3 from one spot
>>
If it's the UK or US then it's perfectly legal even if they object to it. Fuck it and snap away.
>>
>>1029930
OK.
Then go to a random main bus station somewhere in Hungary. 50% is the possibility that at least one of the local employees will fuck you in the ass just because "you don't have the permission to take photos in the territory of the company". Good luck.
>>
>>1030494
Been there, done that.
Nothing happened to me.
Even in the metro right in front of the infamous controler guys.
>>
>>1030501
No problem with the metro, I often go down there and make photos (despite the shitty lightings).
But for a good insult, try the main bus stations of Zalaegerszeg, Kaposvár, Pécs, etc., or some Volánbusz-owned stations in Budapest or the agglomeration.
>>
>>1029873

Why would you let this stop you from practicing photography. what a shit reason

People will either not care, or not remember that they cared about this.

what's your favorite bus?

mine is the volvo olympian for nostalgia.

raised floor, steps divided in half when you entered through the front, handrails with the indented diamond texture on them

Heh, same here. Senpais on /p/ were telling me to prepare to get fucked in the ass by roaming nazi mobs in Hungary. In the end I roamed around and took photos of anything I pleased and nobody bothered me. I visited the metrol control center, a day after the fucking terrorist attack in Brussels, got to see the main control room, ride a train on the test track, watch maintenance guys do their stuff, and they INVITED me to take as many photos as I wanted.
>>
>>1031212
Metro control center of Budapest, to add. My articulation isn't at its best at this hour.
>>

wut?
Anyway, just believe me, the capital and the country are two really different things. Just like the blue and the red parts of the USA, if you know what I mean.
>>
>>1029909
I love the British, they take the weirdest things and make them mundane, and take the most mundane things and make them weird.
>>
Act like you're taking a picture of some architecture but the bus just got in the way.

Sit there, waiting, camera not pointing at the bus, then snap a photo while the bus is in front of you. After it drives off, snap a few photos of whatever's across the street from you then walk away.

>tfw when on southamerica nobody really cares about bus spotting
>tfw you take a photo of some bus and the driver salutes you/slows down the bus
Here that isn't that creepy, obviously you hide your power level, except when taking photos.
On my country (Chile) some drivers also take bus photos, and they love doing it, they even make their own conventions when everybody brings their bus/truck or simply a camera to take photos of the riced out buses, and hang out (ExpoPesados), the bus distributors show off every unit on FB so bus lovers can see them, and is really more bigger on parts like Brazil, where's even a project for a "bus-spotting(busólogia) day" on SP.
I could talk about it more, the connection that bus spotters have with drivers/bus manufacturers or companies is really impressive.
Even normies find some charm on buses, just see what happened when the Transantiago appeared.

Also, bus spotting or "busología" is bigger here since buses are REALLY more interesting on Latin America, on most parts of Chile buses are riced out, even if they're part of the government system they still have lime green curtains, wheel caps and neon lights.
The designs are more aggressive, while European ones look softer, elegant.
Liveries aren't just two colors, there's even a Sub-Zero themed bus for interurban trams (Santiago-Curicó, 5hrs I think), most companies spend time doing them.
Pic related, a minibus for 1hr intercity trips.
On Brazil they have simpler designs, but on Christmas some of them have LED lights, trying to imitate Christmas trees, at least on Sao Paulo.
At least for me, European transport is a little bit boring.
>>
>>1033683
That's so fucking gaudy
>>
>>1034047
There's more, you know...
But most liveries are pretty simple.
>>
>>1029909
Britbongs are retarded, what else is new. Meanwhile trainspotting videos on US freight trains get hundreds of thousands or even millions of views on youtube.
>>
>>1033683
>At least for me, European transport is a little bit boring.
And to me that's aesthetically the most pleasing.
In an ideal world there wouldn't be a single riced out bus here, and Valparaiso would stop fucking with the micros and get some proper full length buses, hill flaites can go get fucked.

just go to indonesia, bus spotting is basically a national past time, and you will enjoy the crazy horns too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjI_oHRfIS0
>>
>>1029909

If they just continue to take photos there will be a point where the police get fed up of being called for nonsense and put something in place to prevent false alarms.
>>
>>1029873
Get a hat or jacket saying local paper name and people will think you are a photographer from them.

Try taking pictures inside Washington DC's metro stations, it'll be a fun time. Even more so now that the city is basically being guarded like a fortress for these next few days for the inauguration of Trump.
>>
>>1042423
Have you run into any problems doing it lately? I did back in like 2012 and no one stopped me

They've started to become anal about "hostile reconnaissance" in the capital area. Its a good thing brown people arent into train spotting

Update: Took a bunch of metro photos in DC this weekend, no one gave a shit, I just avoided taking any around transit cops

So you think that would solve a problem. You even wouldn't ask him/her what are you doing - like an ordinary human.
You could even lose your job, and I think this would be right as fuck. Remember: if you have a problem, speak about it.

what's the appeal of all of this? I'm genuinely curious, I only come here for the cycling shit and people's fascinations with public transport baffles me.

To me it's because they are so mundane, yet at the same time there is so much to them that you just don't think about. When I was a kid (6 or 7) and we would go on class trips we would go in these old Australian Denning landseer coaches. They had a Detroit 6v92 with Jacobs and they used to sing. I remember sitting in my seat the whole time goofing off like "this thing is so cool!!"

About 20 years later I got to drive one of those busses on its final trip before getting sold.

Them feels were so strong

Also I am a bus mechanic, so I guess I have to be interested in how they work. I can't speak for general autists
