sub /n/ give me your best thief experience stories

I just came back to the trainstation I left my bike at, not overnight I must say.
both tires are sliced up and the tension belt I used for my carrier was gone.
It seems some kind of sceme from thiefs to see if the bikes are standing longer than a day or so

>left my bike at a crowded area in the middle of the city 9pm
>come back with a friend heading towards my bike 11pm
>see bike standing far ahead, 4 drunk guys standing around it
>playing with my bell (pic related, my bell)
>coming closer to my bike, 2 of those guys continue walking
>the other 2 remain at bike til they decide to carry it away (locked at the rear wheel)
>whitness everything as I come closer
>say " hey go away from that bike its mine!"
> the 4 suprised drunk eastern european guys approach me laughing, pointing at my bell "is stupid, is stupid haha"
>guy holding my bike puts it back where it was
>they continue walking, laughing smashing beer bottles etc.
>happened in germany

imagine I started a fight with those drunk angry looking slavs, jesus.

Bloomington, IN is home to Indiana University and tens of thousands of kids with daddy's money and not a lot of sense. The town is very, very bike friendly and there are many expensive and lightly-used bikes around. Many of these bikes aren't secured with the best locks, and they're left unattended in dark parking lots anyway. Many of these bikes find their way into the hands of individuals who transport them to Indianapolis and from there into... let's call it the secondary market. With the money generated from this endeavour drugs are shipped down to Bloomington for sale to the same IU students who are mourning the loss of their bikes.

Funny how most bike thiefs are complete idiots and would steal anything that looks even remotely "new". They don't understand what a good bike is and will grab any garbage BSO bikes as long as it looks "nice"

I have a shady pawn shop here where the same guy brings new bikes at least twice a week and no questions asked he walks out with cash. The bikes however are all recently bought BSOs and never something good or used.

Stealing bikes is like collecting cans tier of work even below begging for money. So much risk and so little reward.
>>
>>1029825
it because they only care about what will get them enough money to keep slamming
>>
>>1029825
Yep, best to keep informed as to which bikes might not look like much but are worth quite a bit. Shiny and silver doesn't necessarily make for big bucks on the secondary market.

As for risk, there really isn't that much unless one were to be caught in the act of stealing a bike. That much is just common sense and awareness, though.

I used to steak bikes whenever I need to get somewhere and didn't have a ride. I never owned or sold them, many of them ended up in ditched near my house.
>>
>>1029825
Problem is that valuable bikes are either never kept outside in public because people put them in their garage or apartement, or they're looked up really well. The only thing readily available to steal on the street are usually shitty beaters.

So yeah bike theft is definitely not worth it, especially if you have to fence them for 20% what they're worth because selling on ebay is way too risky

My mom left her specialized ruby in front of a candy store with a large window near the mall. Not even lock. It was snapped up as she was putting in her order. Mostly covered by home owners insurance.

Im not sure if they were dedicated thieves or if it was a crime of opportunity but sure as shit I dont even leave a beater without having a lock.

>Funny how most bike thiefs are complete idiots and would steal anything that looks even remotely "new". They don't understand what a good bike is and will grab any garbage BSO bikes as long as it looks "nice"

The question is what is actually valuable?

The thief wants something that can be quickly and easily turned into cash, which means valuable is what the fence will pay for, no questions asked.

The fence wants something that can be quickly and easily turned into cash, which means valuable is what the customer will pay for, no questions asked.

The customer is someone that buys from fences, so don't have a lot of money and don't care about bikes enough to go to actual bike shops, they want something cheap and cool looking.

So, newish looking BSOs with as much bicycle bling, are what will be turned into the most cash quickly.

So they're the most valuable to the stolen bike market.

Only the dedicated thieves that steal high-end bikes, chop 'em up and sell the parts on craig's list/ebay will actually regard a high-end sleeper as valuable because they're the only ones that can move the goods without getting caught. And they do get caught now and then so it's a dangerous game even for them.

Bottom-feeder thieves and fences almost never get caught, pawn shops are basically legal fences and cops leave them alone because, well I don't know really but I've never heard of them being prosecuted. So those guys are safe so long as they stick to things that move before the original owner can track it down.

So long as it can be in a back shed where customers won't see it until the owner stops looking...and out-front and sold before cops get around to looking (as if they ever would) then it's a safe game. But it needs to be generic, hard to identify and easy to sell.

>I have a shady pawn shop here where the same guy brings new bikes at least twice a week and no questions asked he walks out with cash
If you have a spare afternoon, why not tail him and see where he lives/hangs out?
Then on some other day, try to film him (from a distance) stealing a bike and taking it to the shop?

One less thief and fence would be good.

Here back in the days most of the bike theft was just some drunk asshole wanting an easy ride home without paying for a cab and the bike would eventually be found tossed in a ditch somewhere. Nowadays it's East European thieves who come here, tour cities quickly, and drive out of the country by the time people realize their shit has been gone. So when you wake up in the morning to find your bike missing, it may already be in Russia or Baltics and essentially lost forever. The last store-bought bike I owned left on its final journey this way.

>live in a commieblock, typical of commieblocks the bike shelters are grossly undersized and there's no room inside
>lock up bike at the yard rack with a heavy steel chain and a padlock
>wake up to go to work in the morning
>bike is gone, lock chain lies on the ground neatly cut
>can see fresh tire prints on the grass left by the van they backed up right to the bike rack

Second one isn't about bikes but anyway.

>move to a ghetto hellhole
>parking lot is a gravel field littered with broken into vehicles with missing plates and stolen wheels
>couple of gypsy kids disassembling a moped by the trash dumpsters
>park car and walk to the building after doing first shopping
>look back after entering the stairwell and see a gentleman of African background dressed up in construction work wear sneak up to the car
>peers carefully through all windows

Unfortunately for him I never keep anything valuable in the car and keep it in a horrible condition in general so it looks unappealing. I know the lock can be opened with a dull knife. Same philosophy with my current bike, it's beat up and looks stolen at least once because the body's integral lock has been sawed open (because I lost the key), third stage sprocket is bent out of shape and the saddle is rotting away. I can keep it in the yard in this ghetto and nobody ever touches it.

>Everyone in the block keeps their bikes chained to the stairway handrail, since the stairway is large as fuck and the flats are pretty small (great design choice, communist bulders!)
>One night, all bikes in the block (over 10 of them) disappear

I miss that bike. It wasn't any good, and it was too small for me when it got stolen, but I got it from my godparents as a birthday present back in primary school. Needless to say, none of my neighbors keep their bikes chained at the stairwell anymore.

I've had my tires slashed after a failed theft attempt (which was obvious as there were "bite marks" on my cable and Ulock)

And this was Atlanta, where we don't even have a seriously bad theft problem

>>1031947
I heard they did it so they could get you as you're pushing it home or w/e.

probably just bullshit though, I mean they could be sat watching the bike for hours before the owner comes and unlocks it.

I do see a small amount of bikes without seatposts here, so there is a cycle of peiple getting seatpoats and wheels stolen and then just stealing a replacements
Luckily I have a seatpost that is significantly larger than 27.2, so I got to keep mine

I am assuming they had the decency to leave it after they realized it wouldn'tfit their bike
