Quite a lot of changes since the last time I posted. Brake upgrade to XT M785, shorter stem, 1x10 11-42 conversion, some more sensible tyres (Schwalbe of course, the professional's choice) and some new wheels.

Brought the weight down from 18.2kg to 16.1kg (40.1 pounds to 35.5) and with most of that weight coming off the wheels it makes a massive difference to the handling.

Took this obligatory picture the other day.
Going to swap this frame out soon, the rear disc tab has a crack that is growing at an alarming rate. I have an Identiti Dr. Jekkyl frame, I'll probably use that with some new wheels.

The only pink it's ever had is a bit on the saddle.

Current build Project. Waiting for my cantis to arrive. Current weight is 12.5 kg , not too bad for the fact that I just put it together from parts I had laying around except for the handlebars.
The fork might be a bit too extreme tho (it's also quite heavy)
Maybe I'll get a rigid fork soonish then I'll also be able to run the same brakes front and rear.

It's the stock fork that comes with the original frame, I never bought a different one. 1" steerer diameter makes it difficult to find a nice affordable fork that's not quill stem.

I have mai baiku on the trainer and use it to warm up though, got that zwift setup right now.
Sometimes I take my beater if I have to go shopping after work though and that one has risers with some clip-ons for maximum aero

>>1027039
Nope, the heavier suspension fork and the knobby tires will make you work harder regardless or "correct" orientation. Those arrows are just there for the people that panic about these things. Get some city tires for it and if you want to, look at the little direction arrow and follow it. I would say it's more important to orient the valve with the logo so you can follow where the tube was punctured if you have to fix a flat.
>>
>>1026882
God damn, I wish I had more Miele parts than an old suede saddle.
>>
>>1027040
it's pretty rugged i'll give it that.. not as heavy as i was expecting either. but i tried a friends hybrid bike, it was only barely lighter actually but damn it was about 5 or so minutes quicker on the usual 5km commute

>>1027041

was thinking about getting some slimmer tires but thought the suspension might be a bit much for them.. probably end up just getting a bit of a nicer bike altogether when i can. but then again i could put them nice wheels onto a new bike too

I love using them like this. I get that the guys brother says he wants regular pursuits, but by rotating them 180 in the stem clamp, they become the perfect swept-back riser for city riding. I used the stock brake lever clamps wrapped in old tubes to get a more forward position, too.

th-thanks guize. I'm here every day but I seldom post my bike. this is an old pic that has been posted before (maybe in a commuter thread, though). no changes since this pic, but one of these days I'm going to get a crank with a smaller BCD so my small ring can be less than a 42.

>>1027149
I'm thinking lavender bar tape but might be hard to match. Was thinking silver to match the frame.

Good question on the Maruishi. I've searched high and low and have found every other model they offered except this one. One of my guesses is that it was only made in Japan for a short time and somehow this one got brought to thestates. Once again, a guess. The crafstmenship is awesome. The lugs, paint, and especially the fork are all awesome. The paint isn't perfect as there are dings and rub marks from cables. Probably keep the paint it has now. Thanks for the kind remarks.

I'm the same way as you, I follow pretty much every bike thread on /n/ but I've never posted my ride

good call on going smaller than 42t for small ring, especially for a commuter/grocery getter, roadies will laugh but it makes riding up big hills so easy
>>
>>1027160
>those fucking bike parking things
also, you can't get your bike out if someone with wide bars parks right next to you cause the posts are way too close together

they need to make those at an angle, with the posts slightly sideways so you can just roll your bike out a bit and lift it over the other guy's bars

>good call on going smaller than 42t for small ring, especially for a commuter/grocery getter, roadies will laugh but it makes riding up big hills so easy

ya, I thought getting my MegaRange freewheel would be the final solution. didn't realize that it required a long cage derailleur, though, so that put it at a two-part solution. I'm leg strong enough to get up the hills around here when I'm fully loaded on the 42/34, but it's close. it definitely doesn't feel like the "bailout" gear that the 34 is supposed to be, and the hills here aren't even all that crazy. So I need to quit procrastinating and get like a 110 BCD crank and a smaller ring. fuck pride.

It's a whole bunch of random-ass secondhand and used parts.

Frame is a Nashbar 853 mountain frame that I bought new in 2007ish - really wanted the Salsa Ala Carte, but this was about half the price, and it turned out to be a really nice frame. Fork is for a Surly Troll. Homeless person 700C conversion with some lightweight 29'er wheels I had laying around the garage.

Drivetrain is a 50/34 double and 11-28 8-speed in the back. Cassette is a Deore XT, I think. The derailleurs and crankset are all first-gen XTR, and the chainrings are off a Sora compact double. Barend friction shifters, TRP Sypre brakes and levers, Salsa Cowchipper bars.

It rides surprisingly well. 700C conversion means it has very large steering trail, which makes for super stable no-hands riding, but a lot of wheel flop - so the front basket is really only good for light loads. Sky-high BB is great for curbhopping without pedal strikes.

>>1027309

Heres my baby getting hosed down after a very muddy ride. She now needs repairs after a violent crash at 50kph, parts are taking long to arrive and I am itching to get back to riding, even though it might not be the best idea with my concussion.

Also why do manufacturers think white bartape is a good idea? It got dirty after a few rides and then I just stopped caring. If I get new bartape, should I just go safe and get black or do you think red might suit well?

My old ass beat up bike. Bought from a coworker for 100 eurobucks after having brand new bikes vandalized and stolen several times in a year. 3rd gear in front is bent and unusable, plus it looks stolen several times because of broken and sawed up locks, so nobody wants it. Expecting it to serve me for many years to come.

Thanks. DOF achieved by using a long focal length relative to sensor size and wide aperture. I took that one (and pic related) with a Helios 44M-4 f/2 58mm lens on a Micro 4/3 camera, which translates to 116mm focal length. At wide aperture it gets quite narrow.

Nice, second one's gorgeous too.
Best lense I have only goes down to f/3.2 so I've never been able to get anything like that.

>>
>>1027477
Well, you can get a Helios 44 for $20-$70 depending on the condition and plonk it on nearly any digital system with a cheap M42 adapter. If you want to play around with narrow DOF and compressed perspective, then adapting old M42 lenses is the cheapest way to go. I also recommend the f/3.5 135mm Takumar for this sort of stuff.

not them, but the answer is basically gotta go fast. "Monster Cross" bikes are basically just ghetto gravel grinders, fast descents on on fire roads while not giving a shit what's underneath you is the general idea, and just to have fun on technical courses, etc.

This is hilarious. I love it.

That said, have you ever ridden a drop-bar MTB before? Because that's a crazy roadie-tard amount of saddle-bar drop, which is going to put more of your weight on your hands and less on the saddle. It's going to be terrifying on descents and really beat up your hands on the rough stuff, even with the suspension fork.

Most people who do dropbar MTBs put the tops about level with the seat, and look for bars with a really shallow drop. It doesn't look like those bars have all that much flair/sweep either, which means you're going to be knocking your forearms into the bars when you're in the drops and trying to put some body english into the bike.

Thanks man.
It was a weekend project, so taking that into account, it took around four months.
As for general difficulty, it wasn't hard (at least by my DIY standards) but did require a lot of prior experience and skill.
You need to be familiar with woodworking and fiberglass to an intimate level, also having a vaccum bag is good for forming the carbon.

Also working with carbon fiber on an amateur level is basically slow suicide.

I am currently planning a 11x2 bamboo road bike but I'm waiting on some paychecks. carbon, epoxy, and aluminium are expensive to buy non-wholesale amounts of.

If you're talking about selling one or something, I don't really have the time or dedication for something like that.

here's a picture a month or so before the other one, about half way through applying carbon.

>>1027972

>-Would Zefal Paragon C50 mudguards fit this bike?
Very likely.
>-Why does the frame sticker says "size L 58 cm" but the online catalogue says "size L 56 cm"?
Because there is no universaly accepted way of measuring bike size. The longer measurement is probably 'CT' - center of bottom bracket to top of seat tube. The shorter would then be CTT - bottom bracket to over side of top tube. Looks to be about a 2cm difference.
>>
>>1028165

It actually says "Fuji Cycling" although I needed it to be upside-down to make it out.
Dunno why I wanted to see "Touring" there.

Raleigh Record Ace, mine for £75. He threw in various freewheels, bits and some random tools. And a cheap lock.

So far I have spent £10 on it in the form of a freewheel removal tool. I also removed the mudguards, because they made it look 350 years old as opposed to 35. Next up is the front tyre, which is going to be replaced to match the rear.

It's aged, but it rides well and the frame, fork and stays are all Reynolds 531 with only minor surface rust, no dents and it's all straight. The Weinmann brakes stop, eventually, and it shifts alright considering the state it was in when I picked it up. I'm slightly too tall for it, but I'm keeping it as I'm quite fond and hopefully someone will come along who can give it a decent home.

I saw the same bike, same size, same year, same gear going for £850 on a certain hispter bike website.

The seatstay brake is just a u-brake.

yeah i realised that too when i put it against my road bike (which is set up rather relaxed) since then i flipped the stem and also lowered the saddle a bit. and also as i wrote before i fitted a shorter rigid fork. much better geometry now.
i am currently waiting on a new front chainring ( old one was sharp a shark teeth) and some fenders. i will then fit some narrower tires too, since those big tires really feel retarded, they were just the best tires i still had laying around.
you are right about the bars, tho i really dont like those sweeping bars.
the main use will be for getting around my town and the next small towns, which means roads, undpaved roads, some wide wood trails and sometimes some very tame single trail. first task will be to get through the winter tho. for everything rougher i take my "normal" mtb.

yes. MKS makes some good flat pedals that aren't overly expensive. I've got the "lambda" model, which is more commuter friendly. paid $40 US, very solid, all aluminum. they have sportier flats, tho.

sheldon is right. bikes are nice or not irrespective of frame material

that looks very nice indeed

It's a cross bike right? A nice light one at that. I'd take the rack off. It's weight you don't need. On trails with stuff on the rack it will rattle. If you stand to climb, rear rack weight will sway in a tail wagging the dog type deal (revelate-esque seatbag if you really need room).
I'd also take the fenders off (fenders and knobblies are mutually exclusive imo, if it's wet on trails that require tires with tread pattern, mud will completely gunk up inside the fenders)

I think this bike will be an absolute blast to ride trails on. It's a capable specialist. Obviously it's a great all rounder but If you just wanted a relaxed road bike, i think the standard road gearing and aluminium frame will be frustrating.

Are you new here? Is this the first PYBT you've seen? It wasn't created solely to discuss OP's bike so of course not every post is going to be commenting on it. Think of the OP post as being the same as every other person who posted their bike and look at how many replies they get.

this guy (>>1029341) said nobody cares [about your new brakes and tyres and shit], then called OP a retarded cunt

Then, someone I assume is OP said "wow look everyone cares because there are a lot of replies"

Then I said "fuck you nobody cares about your bike, they're just here to post theirs and wait for someone to congratulate them on having a bicycle"

sorry none of you know how to read

No numb dick for me. I sit properly and the saddle fits correctly. I can easily do 120 miles with no discomfort, probably more but 120 is the most I've done in a day on this bike.

You sit further back on a saddle like this (Brooks Professional), and look at pictures... this is how one sets up a proper leather saddle.

Sold my old camera so had some spare money. Bought this purely to commute on and take away for work, since I don't like putting my nice bike in the back of a muddy truck.

Its surprisingly nice to ride. Actually finding that 8 speed suits my retarded riding style. Also I'm used to Campy shifters so moving the whole lever is weird. Also internal cable routing is fucking sexy I don't care how bargain bucket this bike is.

>>
>>1029933
Don't shit on Claris. For cheap money, it actually shift surprisingly well, and it's tough as shit. I built up a drop-bar 29er and used Claris with an 8-speed Deore derailleur out back, to let me use 22-34-46 up front and 11-32 in back. Worked flawlessly and actually had a bit more range than I probably needed. 600 miles of mostly mountain singletrack through New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.

>Still need to find a 105 crank, BB, headset

there's no reason to do that. I'd get new brake pads, maybe a dual pivot front brake, touch up the paint on the top tube and leave it there. Maybe nicer tires.

The only other worthwhile upgrade path would be getting lower climbing gears with a compact crank or a triple, but i'd wait until that bb or the chainrings go foul (potentially never).
>>
>>1030068
You're actually right. The sport lx crank and brakes work well. I do need new pads. Any recommendations? Also, the tires are Vitoria rubino pros. They are pretty fast
>>
>>1030070
shimano or ashima cartridges and then when they wear, put kool stops in the holders.

anything up from oldschool hex bolt pads will be a BIG improvement though.

Rubinos are the worst good tire, but yeah, a good tire nonetheless.

>>
>>1030289
not the same anon, but damn yeah your legs are short

>>
>>1030285
I've ridden big miles for years with a poor fit and it's doable, but you are fucking your body up and limiting yourself. Now i'm 8 months into a knee injury and only just starting to ride much again. It's probably going to be a lifelong issue. I wish i hadn't ignored my body for so long.

If all a fit achieves is small comfort and efficiency improvements, it's worth it, but it might also save you from serious injury. Your setup with the saddle slammed back and tilted upwards looks very wrong and combined with such a relaxed front end, must be extremely poor for generating power on the flat. I don't think you'd be merely finessing your fit, it looks completely off.

Free from a shop you know or cheap from an unfamiliar shop, ~15 minutes discussing things with a pro is a good idea.

>650km week
Really? That's a lot of riding. IMO anyone riding seriously on a road bike should pay for a proper fit. There are charlatans and snake oil to avoid but it's worth seeking out.

Judging from his pics he lives in the Midwest and it's flat. He also has huge quads meaning he's probably a Clyde who can tear it up on flat roads and put down tons of power but will fall apart almost immediately on a 3% grade. That's at least my inference.

That Vitus had some severe constraints on it. The riders went a few cm smaller than they usually would on the frame because the whole thing was held together with epoxy as opposed to welds, and needed to reduce some of the lateral flex.

Kelly always rode small frames anyway. It worked for him, evidently.

If it works for the rider then it's good. I tend to go for smaller frames than most men my size, it's personal preference.
