got hit by a car and my specialized allez sprint expert is kill

was riding in the bike lane, suv just took a right turn right infront of me and i slammed into the side of it, bounced off it onto the pavement. they didnt speed off and i got the insurance info, its on tape, hopefully everything will work out but that never seems to happen

always the worst because it means i cant ride anymore

Similiar thing just happened to me. Shit sucks. Their insurance company is talking about paying 'market value' on my bike not replacement cost so i might get jewd. It wasn't as nice as yours though. RIP

Thought you were just making a statement, not a question. One week of unusually warm November weather here, then back to more typical temperature. Goal for today's ride is to check out construction progress on the rail line through the valley going from Belle Plaine to the K+S mine.

Passed a horse rider on my commute to work today and it reminded me of this incident I had with a horse about two weeks ago

>be riding home from gym after a nice workout
>it's dark and well below freezing
>no worries as I've got lights and studded tires
>no snow yet so the studs make that nice they have on asphalt and ice
>pass a stable
>come up from behind to a girl/young woman in her late teens or early twenties riding a horse
>it's going along nicely on the left side of the MUP
>prepare to pass the horse and get as far right as possible to give it plenty of room
>riding to pretty massive headwind as I live on a coast
>just as I'm almost side by side with the horse it presumably hears my studs against the asphalt
>horse panics
>now I'm side by side next to a panicking horse on a narrow MUP
>nowheretoescape.png
>can't floor the brakes because slippery as fuck
>only option is to keep riding and get past the horse hoping it won't kill both me and it's rider before that
>manage to get past
>horse rider manages to stay on and calm the beast
>get a massive rush of adrenaline and ride home with my heart racing long after I've gotten home

Horses are amazing animals but oh boy are they scary when they panic next to you. Especially when they're on asphalt and you can hear every single frantic hoof stomp loudly next to you. Especially when you're clipped into your bike and it's pitch black save for the lights you and the other rider have.
>>
>>1025731
I drive past horse cucks sometimes on rural roads and i always do a key banger (where you kill your engine, press the accelerator a few times to flood the exhaust with fuel, and then start the engine again which makes a loud bang).

I think some lady got thrown the other night lel stupid horses.

An early 57 km this morning before wind was forecast to be 40 gusting to 60. -3 °C with a 30 kph wind when I left the house, so I immediately went back in and put on my winter tights. Today's ride makes 14,000 km for the year. Tail end of the forecast for the next week shows the first significant snow of the fall.

I just crashed at 50kph, and somehow me and the bike are fine. Just a sore hip from the landing.

it happened on a descent on a very nice cleared cycling path, suddenly exactly where the path makes a turn around a bus stop its suddenly a sea of leaves, couldnt see at all where the path went. Saw myself heading for a signpost and braked in panic, but of course braking with slicks does not work on wet leaves. I smashed down on my right side and my helmet took quite a hit too, slid a nice amount before coming to a standstill. Somehow none of my clothing is damaged and I couldnt find anything on my bike that seemed wonky. I think I was saved the slippery leaves, allowing me to slide on them instead of the road. And probably the helmet of course. A nice woman who saw it came running out of her car and didnt believe me when I said I was okay kek.

Id like to think im going to be more careful next time, but I dont anything can be done about rogue leaves like these. Maybe not riding in autumn and especially not in the dark.

It is a new (first day then) traffic calming boom barrier. The city admin, in their infinite wisdom, decided to skimp on the white and red paint.
could not see it until 2m before crash, going 25km/h, despite new kool stop dual compound v-brakes I planted my nose on that steel boom and ripped my pants and knees. i am not pleased :-)

you can get a special home trainer tire for it. it lasts longer and is more quet. but will cost you around 20 bucks. I am using my trainer with my usual tires. they are no slicks but it works fine. only time can tell now how bad they will wear out

So nice to ride on a low wind day for a change. Did 130 km half paved / half gravel. Slow leak on my rear tire, but it held good pressure most of the ride. I've had so many punctures this past month. also, XC geometry is horrible on descents-Ive been there, but its good for learning reflexes and stuff, saving rear slideouts, adjusting front tiere slideouts etc. heal soon bro!

Yes I am. Well they are just worn as shit actually.

>>1026626

desu I didn't even expected that crash I just slipped from behind. Time to get some new tyres.
>>
>>1026627

Not that horrible it's just my fork sucks ass pair that with XC tyres and you have a bumpy ride. I lose traction quite a bit as I push more speed. Saving up for RS Reba now.
>>
>>1026637
>>1026630
the problem might be pressure in tires, short travel forks rarelly causes crashes if the rebound is not super fast. what tires and what pressure?

Also, they way you save rear slipouts is to move the front - e.g. your rear slipped to the left, you should have steered to the right with front tire to get the body mass back to the center of the bike, that way you move the G force on the tires and allow them to do the job of regaining traction...youll get it with practice.

-You cam make mounts for the handlebars [use a 7/8" hole saw], or TreeFortBikes.com has ready made usable ones.
-Add 1 bungee cord
-Get hudge flashlight [WalMart, Home Depot,
<10 bux], brighter than any goddamn bike headlight.
-fug a trainer!
>>
>>1026796
Is your trainer very old? It looks a lot better than mine. And, well, I can't really tell since I've never had one before, so I figured it is supposed to be harder to pedal on the trainer than it would be on the road. I do know that you're supposed to use the gears to regulate your effort. I'm guessing it guess easier as you use it.
>>
>rear brake has been frozen for 2 weeks
>now front derailleur is frozen
Nothing of value lost so far desu. Need to do something g about the issue though before it spreads to front brake and rear derailleur.
>>
>>1026824
cant you just put it inside for the time being? theres always some corner of the house you can shove it in
>>
>>1026824
Frozen from cold or seized?

I've had my v-brakes get sticky due to water getting into the pivot bushings (they pivot on bushing not the brake posts). I took them off and worked in some triflow through a teeny gap to get them moving smooth again.
>>
>>1026826
And then have it freeze within 5 minutes of taking it back outside. It's inside but in a garage that's not heated. Besides freezing and melting a bike over and over again isn't the best option.

>>1026862
I'm pretty sure it's frozen water in the cables/levers somewhere along the way. The brake caliper and derailleur work just fine when activating them with hands but the levers are stuck. I'll have to open them at some point and figure out what is the problem.
>>
Its starting to look like November will end up being my highest distance month of the year. I've got 1260 km so far this month, and only need another 450 km to match my best month of the year. The temperature will start hovering around freezing but the wind will be low enough that I can go out for 3 - 4 hour rides.

While commuting home from uni, a cager and I stopped at an intersection at the same time, I was to his rigth, so by the clockwise rule, i had the right of way. While I'm about 1/3 of the wai into the intersection, the car starts rolling at me. I frantically dinged my bell to no affect. I realized I had to think like a cager to avert a crash, so I flipped the guy off. The cager promptly stopped and honked at me, while I smiled at my smug superiority, and rode off.

It's hard for me to say, I bought it used and as you can tell from the picture is missing one of the legs. The previous owner was a girl who used it with a mountain bike. I didn't ask anything else regarding the trainer. I imagine she got it from a store nearby at some point. Not even that many pictures come up online when looking for this trainer.
>>
>>1026970
why did you even get a castelli jersey if you have a bso bike? could have got some amazon jersey and get a good bike faster. arent those castelli jerseys $100+ ?

Hmm, my case is pretty much the same. It's supposed to be made by some Italian manufacturer called Supergo or some shit. I'd suggest you keep using it and see if it gets any better. I've had so many flat tires in the past month. Yet another one today, a piece of steel belting wire stuck in the tire. Really easy to find as the area around it was blasted with talc. Its getting too cold to be fixing flats.

Wind was gusting to beyond 50 kph, which meant a really slow ride out and a really fast ride back. It rained last night so I picked up a lot of mud going past a construction area.

I've been picking up McDonalds Monopoly pieces while I'm out riding. I have an entire board filled just from the pieces I found on the side of the road, probably have enough extras for a 2nd board. That is all the pieces EXCEPT the rare ones needed to win anything. Also found a few free burgers, fries and a drink along with a 3 month trial for a magazine app.

50 km with the temperature starting at -8 °C warming up to -5 by the time I got home with the wind between 20 and 30 kph. Come February that would practically be t-shirt weather, but it felt pretty cold today. About 12 km into the ride I encountered a long train and had to do some loops to keep from getting too cold.

For me it always feels coldest before the snow arrives. I think that is because the extra rolling resistance from snow both slows you down and makes you work harder, reducing windchill and increasing heat generated.

I wish I could find a place like that to ride. That and its more XC terrain than anything

No Garmin? Why? Is your mind so weak that a little bike pc controls you? Not me, mate. I ride how I want to ride, period. All that little bike pc does is record what I do, not tell me what to do. Grow a pair, mate. Quit fucking around with pizza stickers and cool bar tape and get some miles. Maybe you don't like the garmin because it proves how few miles you ride. Riding .3 miles to the star bucks on the corner doesn't add up to big miles, mate. If you think this is silly now, wait a few years, and when you finally actually square up, you'll read my words and thing I'm a fucking sage. But in reality, I just have common sense. So remember, dump the stickers, the pizza, the selfies, and log some fucking miles. And post them online for others to gauge, that is unless you don't have what it takes. And if that's the case, might as well keep the pizza stickers and keep playing grab ass with your friends at star bucks.

I encountered a singletrack course yesterday in the forest and had a go. Holy fuck that was insanely fun and very intense, did 3 laps of the 7km track and only stopped because it was getting dark. One of the laps I was following a speeddemon around which showed me just how fast I could throw the bike in the corners, which was cool and improved my speed dramatically. But like typical mountainbikers, these shits were very slow once they actually had to put in power.

Next time I should take off my kickstand and mudguards.

Road was a bit slippy so not amazing. I started 8 month ago (doing once per weekend) and appart from lower back problem, I have a blast.

Light dusting of snow this morning. It was gone by the time I finished my ride. The snow concealed the fact the graders were about again messing up the nice smooth gravel roads. Once the snow melted wet sand / clay started clinging to my tires slow things down a bit.

Broke my best monthly distance for the year today. I'm within a reasonable distance of my all time single month PR. But the weather has been unpredictable and generally worse than forecast lately.

Late start today and ran into lunch traffic while working my way through town. Didn't drink enough so my legs started to stiffen towards the end. Only need 132 km to reach the annual goal of 15,000 km I set at the beginning of the year, so I'll try to go that far tomorrow. At the time I set the goal I didn't think I'd actually reach it. An abnormally warm Feb, Mar and Nov was a big help.
>>
>>1029796

How can you reach 15 000km ? It means 300km per week, how can you find the time.

I started in march, but I can only do it in the week end, so once a week. It's hard to make progress.
>>
>>1029893
Plenty of long solo rides to cancel out the days I don't ride. I have 45 rides longer than 100 km this year. I try to get out for a few hours most days regardless of weather. I live on the edge of town so it makes going out quite easy. I might be deterred more often if I lived in a dense high traffic area.

Unless you are riding a road bike on the highway, riding time is probably a better goal to set than distance.

One thing I've noticed is that whenever you feel "too tired to go for a ride" or "aren't in the mood", just go away as you'll rarely regret it.
>>
>>1029915

I usually go home from work at 8h30, so it's hard to go biking. I guess I should do longer ride in the weekend.

Set out yesterday to do December's Strava Gran Fondo, but I was slow and my legs were stiff so I only did about 50 km. Today I went out to do it and I was still slow, but finished it anyway. I think the slowness may have be partly due to running my marathon winter tires at too low a pressure. The sidewalls are very stiff, so I imagine if the pressure is low enough to induce flexing it just eats your watts. I should have just run them at the max rated pressure like I normally do. Slowness might also be related to rotating through 3 of my bikes this week making my legs have to keep readjusting.

Temperature for the entire 5 hour ride was between -3 and -4 °C, with freezing drizzle constantly getting on my glasses for the first 2 hours. But with the temperature forecast to drop to -20 °C early next week I wanted to get my 12th Gran Fondo of the year out of the way.

Opted for the respirator today due to a 25 kph wind in addition to -20 °C temp. Keeps face warm, and glasses mostly free of fogging. One notable downside is the inability to drink, really need to get a straw. Added suspenders to my non-bib winter tights a few years back when I got tired of them catching on the saddle nose.

The UA Base 4.0 baselayer is super toasty. Legs were nice and warm. But upper body was too hot even with just 2 layers and my jacket left unzipped halfway most of the ride, should have wore my UA Base 2.0. Overheating was certainly due to the one factor I have the most difficulty planning for, exertion level. I always generate tons of heat riding the fat bike.

The huge volume of fat bike tires makes them dramatically affect by temperature swings. The 20 °C drop in temperature since the last time I used it made the tires far more squishy than I would have liked. But once I got going I didn't want to stop and screw around with a mini-pump.

Not a pleasant feeling. Sometimes you can stop and break the ice so it falls off which helps. Starting next Monday it is supposed to be around -9 °C for at least a week which will be fantastic. I sign up for the Festive 500 every year, but have never come remotely close to finishing it. This year should be no different.

Pop bottle visor worked pretty damn well. The plastic thickness isn't complete uniform so it distorts vision a little, so I'd recommend spending a few bucks and going to hardware store for a replacement visor they sell for full face shields. I just stuck it on using 3M Mounding Tape which is double sided with a bit of foam in the middle.

Kept upper part of my face and forehead much warmer. Which had the side effect of making my nose much less runny. Another thing I didn't expect is that when going down wind it catches some wind from behind directing it across my face which helps keep my glasses from fogging. Side of my face got cold in a cross wind, more of a wrap around would probably fix that. Great hitting the wind head on.

I just need to tape off the lower half of the front vents on my helmet and I should be good.

Quit my messenger job last month and getting less km in my legs now, but I think thats actually better for performance as I get to ride fast now.
Also changed my tyres from the Mavic ones I had to GP4000s, they feel a lot better than the mavics.
Getting a new hrm very soon, and most likely a stages power meter once I get the money...

That's 31 days of riding, one entire month of the year on my bike. Next year much less, since we are starting off 2017 with a normal winter, so I can do other stuff for a few months like snow shoeing and skiing. If May isn't complete shit, maybe I'll finally finish a full brevet series.

Wear loose pants. You want as much bloodflow as you can. Wear winter shoes - there are good ones and bad ones. Properly isolate the steel SPD mounting plate and fill the slots in with something isolating. Wear thicker socks in bigger shoes.
If all else fail, go cliplessless in softer shoes that allow you to move you feet.

First two rides of the year were on my rollers. Spent a bit of time doing some 80 rpm riding in my highest gear. I could use a bit more resistance for low cadence riding. But in that gear once I hit 100 rpm my HR gets up to almost 180. On the rollers only the 4-5 highest gears on the bike are of any use.

A little less cold today so I took my fatbike out for a bit. Managed 9.7 km in a little over an hour. Carefully threaded my way along a snowshoe trail I laid down a few days ago. I had some frozen pizza yesterday and the massive dose of sodium caused me to retain a couple extra pounds of water. Peed it all out around noon today. My homemade pizza with dry cured salami is even worse, I usually have to drink 1.5 L or more of water a few hours after eating it.

I've wondered if one could use that their advantage to be extra hydrated before a long ride. A cursory search didn't yield any relevant results.

>tfw you're a sweaty motherfucker when you ride no matter if it's 40 or 90 degrees outside

I don't mind being sweaty if I'm on my own time and can shower as soon as I get home from riding, but I can't have the back of my shirt soaked at the office.

How do those of you who bike commute in hotter climates deal with the sweat issue?

Go slow on your ride to work.
Don´t ride in your work clothes.
Have a washcloth and a towel at work. Use those to wipe your sweaty areas before changing into work clothes.

That works for me, though i gotta say i don´t sweat that much.
If there´s truly no space for you to change clothes you can do that on the toilet. Well, thats what comes to mind. Never had a workplace totally without any kind of room i could use for changing. But showers at work are kinda uncommon in my corner of the universe.
>>
>>1041400
Wear synthetic clothing so your skin breathes and sweat doesn't build up
Arrive early at work and don't change clothes right away, wait some 10 minutes to cool off
Go to a bathroom, get undressed, pat the sweat away with a towel and reapply deodorant
Get on your work clothes
I'd tell you to take it easy on your ride to work but I'm like you and I'll sweat profusely regardless of effort and temperature
>>
>>1041400
I've realized I can ride without sweating, but I have to ride with very little effort keeping my HR no higher than about 120 bpm. It is surprisingly hard to do because I always want to go fast. The funny thing is even riding with little effort it isn't as slow as you'd think. Its amazing how much extra effort you need to go just a little bit faster.

Cycleops Fluid 2 a decent trainer? I'm just getting back into cycling after a few years off and the online reviews seem decent.

Went snowshoeing a few hours this morning to pack down a path to fat bike on. I should have waited until tomorrow to ride on it though. The snow was too soft and needs to firm up overnight. The snowshoe trails I made earlier in the week were nice and firm. I have to avoid getting too carried away riding on those trails, if I veer outside the path and have to put a foot down I'm in snow up to my knee.

It was almost too warm today getting up to -4 °C. Some above freezing days this week so I might squeeze in a long ride on a less fat bike.

I can't comment on the trainer, but Zwift has been great for getting my FTP up without the distractions of traffic and frost dick. The group rides and segment records really do good at breaking up the monotony of pedaling away in my living room.

If you haven't used a trainer yet, it does take a while to get over the "torture machine" feeling of the bike staying stationary all the time.

Quick question: so I lost 80 pounds in 2016 and I decided this year to get into mountain biking to help with the fitness aspect. I currently weigh 250 pounds and I went riding on a bike for the first time in a decade the other day. After like 30 minutes I was too sore to continue. It's a mountain bike and outside of buying some biking shorts what can I do to help relieve the pressure? Is it something you just get a tolerance for in time?

1. you will need padded shorts- you can get some for <$10 on amazon or ebay but the sizing may not be right. Sometimes academy or dicks have them for $20ish. 2. Seats are a very personal preference- unfortunately you have to try many to find one that fits your body. 3. MTB saddle is never really gonna feel good but you should be able to find something that doesn't cause pain. I weigh about half of you and this feels good to me. Its a tri seat but i use it for mtb.

Went out for a 2 hours fat bike ride. Legs started feeling heavy around 1.5 hour mark. Weighed 3 lbs less when I got home. So hard to not sweat a ton riding fat bike in snow. As it is I'm not wearing much and don't think I could go to just one layer. Maybe washing my jacket will help. It gets stiff after a while and I think salt buildup limits it breathability.

Between schedule issues and road conditions I finally got in my first decent road ride of the year, just 25 miles but I picked a route that took me over pretty much all the big hills near me, so plenty of effort expending and the distance was just right given today's cold and wind . Felt really good, found I'm in better mid-winter condition than I expected I would be given that I've barely been doing 30 miles/week commuting lately, haven't been out on a decent ride in almost 4 weeks. I'll chalk it up to all the CX riding I did in November and early December, and the little bits of running and hiking I've done since then.

This was also the first time I tried using the Bar Mitts I got (myself) for Christmas on a proper road ride, if anything actually they're too warm to use when it's 33 and windy out, I had to take my gloves off entirely for the second half of the ride, and deliberately rode down the last big descent with bare hands to get rid of excess heat and moisture.

No on-ride pic but here's the bike I was on, with the BMs installed.

Another fat bike ride today. I snowshoed some more trails yesterday, but put a little more thought into the intersections. I made a pair of arcs joining perpendicular paths so it is easy to switch paths regardless of which direction I'm going. Some of the paths I made Sunday it is only possible to branch off if you are approaching from a certain direction, short of stopping and lifting the bike. Put my camera on and ended up with 13 GB of video.

Holy fuck /drt/, had such a great ride today. Finally caught a break with the weather and went out with 4 of my teammates. Racked up 110km and hit some strava sections pretty hard. All the winter training paid off, we were flying in the 40-50 kph zone in a few parts, dusting freds in our path.

Only sucky part is that the city still hasn't cleared the bike lanes of debris from >2 weeks ago. There's about 10mm of sand in some pretty fast corners. Mother fuckers.

Went 1 km around noon, said fuck it and turned around. Too much wind to be at all enjoyable.

But then around 4 pm it was much better so I went for a ride on the MUP. It got too warm and the packed snow on the side streets was getting soft so tires would sink into it making control very difficult to maintain. Back to colder temps in a few days which will mean lots of icy ruts.

Decided to keep on running this week since despite making my legs incredibly sore I didn't feel it while out riding in the cold. Ran 1 mile first day with a 2nd after a brief walk. Then 2 miles straight second day, 3 the 3rd and 4 the 4th. Should be good for a marathon by the end of the month. In the past whenever I built up to 1.5 hours running the tedium of it all just becomes unbearable even with a tv. After doing 5 tomorrow I'll probably bump the speed up from 5 mph rather than going longer.

The roads are in rather shitty condition at the moment for winter cycling. Lumpy icy ruts everywhere. If I wasn't using my studded fat bike it would induce much sphincter clenching. The back alleys are in pretty good, still packed with snow and didn't melt much. Just enough snow forecast tomorrow to hide the uneven ice on the roads, but not enough to smooth it out.

About 12 cm of snow yesterday. I went for a fat bike ride early this morning before the MUP gets plowed. Lots of light reflecting off the snow so I didn't even need a light. It was slow going, about 8.5 - 9 kph, and around 11 kph riding back along my track. Did the entire 73 min ride without unclipping once.

Just started running myself as it's less hassle than biking off-road in the dark, mud and rain. My legs are fucking killing me for days after and I'm only running a few miles 3 times a week.
Do you guys do some sort of weight lifting as well as cardio? I'm thinking of some dumbbell workouts. I'm a total noob to training as usually just ride for fun but would like to get fitter for biking

I've never tried weights.

I've run every day since Wednesday, the soreness went away by the 4th day.

Tried running at 5.5 mph on the treadmill today, considerably more sweating for me. Only ran for around 1.5 miles at a time before taking a few minute walking break. 5 miles total while watching a bit of Enter the Dragon on AMC (far too many commercials). A few days adjusting to that speed I should be able to run an hour continuous, maybe.

The last few times I took jogging before I started cycling I found the more I run the longer it takes for the endorphins to kick in. Early on I'd get into the groove after about 15 minutes then it would gradually push out to 30, 45 minutes. I notice the same thing riding but its more subtle due to the low impact.

I squat, use the leg press machine, lateral band walks, and calf exercises (standard calf raises and eccentric heel drops)

It's difficult to climb after lifting on the same day, so I don't. The day after hurts if you're not used to it but you get used to it and it's fine.

Yeah I thought I was going to die tonight running the first mile round the park in the dark in the pissing rain, then boom got into a bit of a pace and ran some more with extra energy. I haven't ran for about 20 years I'd imagine so it's a bit odd using non biking muscles. Gonna stick at it and obviously get more than a couple of miles in on my running days.

My plan is to do some light cardio (jogging) during the week as I'm out walking the dog normally anyway so spending that time running instead of walking should improve my fitness a bit.
Weights I plan to do 3 times a week but try and keep away from doing them on the run up to the weekend as that's when I get time to ride and I don't want tired legs ruining my weekend riding. Started squatting, but mostly upper body but I really have no idea what's good to compliment cycling fitness. I'm guessing just being stronger from weight lifting and fitter from running will be helpful. I'm thinking the upper body strength will help me out with the longer downhill (mtbiking) sections as my arms and legs just go numb after a while.

Whatever you're weakest at. Or if in doubt, squats and deadlifts.

>-28 °C last night
>rising to +2 by tomorrow morning
>falling to -10 by the afternoon
I hate these temperature swings as they are typically associated with huge winds. Supposed to be a relatively calm period late tonight that I could go ride in when the wind drops to around 30 kph.
