I saw a works train not too long ago with a tracked digger parked on a flat car picking up a pile of ties with a grappling claw. There was some sort of big hydraulic system on the back of the engine but I couldn't tell what it was for.

It's probably a slot train. Used for picking up scrap of all kind along the RoW. I forget what the shit on the back is for. I think it's actually an air compressor for the brake pipe, but I never pay that much attention when I go buy them.
