I went to a couple in 2006. I was okay with it being mostly degenerates. I never really got the whole run-through-solid-red-lights and piss people off thing. Especially on a Friday night. After I realized that the fights with motorists and kicking cars was a regular occurrence, I bounced.

Also, too many rookies/drunks not knowing what the hell is going on. You're better off riding with a solid crew of actual riders and obeying traffic signals. CM reminds me of the fucking motorcycle squid groups that ride around and piss people off.

You should see the fatties and retards who show up to this thing in Houston. Riding all over the sidewalks (which is illegal) and just general fuckery. They really just Fuck it up for people who ride regularly and not once a month.

We don't have them in my city anymore. We elected a mayor who's super into cycling and puts bike lanes everywhere so there's nothing left to protest. Also the cops started showing up and taking everybody's drugs and liqour away. It was a fun way to meet people when I was new to the city and didn't have money to do anything that wasn't free.

Liquor/drug enforcement took away the people who were there to party. Winning the bike lanes took away the people who were there to protest. That didn't leave anyone left so CM was no more.

Mid 1990's, I worked in San Francisco, and joined in 4 critical mass rides. The first three were before the crackdown, the final one after.

Before the crackdown the rides were great. It was just a solid mass of bicycles that stretched for 10 blocks, and completely fucked up traffic . Because of that though, Mayor Brown ordered a crackdown.

The crackdown ride sucked, as the police enforced stop lights. So rather than this continuous moving, you'd get stuck at a red light, and it would take like three cycles of red/green just to go one block. After that no more critical mass for me.

Monthly CMs in my country are chill if at times boring. Then there's also a yearly CM at the beginning of "cycling season", gathering a couple of thousand participants. It's a mess, but I guess it's fun because of it.
