I like them so far, I tried going for something that rolls well on asphalt yet provides enough grip for some light offroading, I think they do that job well.
Already had a puncture though but I have really, really bad luck regarding those so it probably means nothing. I might try running these tubeless soon.

Loving the 1x group too, shifting is really snappy and precise and I actually like the bigger gear jumps due to the huge cassette.

It depends on your body and frame geometry, for some people it actually makes sense but as a general rule it's fucking stupid. People who follow those rules probably don't ride much since anyone who actually puts in miles will learn very fast to set their bike up for comfort, health and performance, not looks or retarded cycling memes.

Being comfy on your bike makes you faster for longer which more than counteracts being slightly less aero.

dam wish i had an aero bike, sadly i am just a mere 19 yr old student with outdated tiagra.Do you not know how to adjust your headset? you are on a aero bike yet you have a pretty upright riding position.

r8 my pro setup, undersized frame 120mm stem, 5.25 inch saddle to bar drop.
>>
>>1019435
You really dont need a saddle bag, its best to travel simple and stash all gear in your 3 huge back jersey pockets, and remove the dork disc, the dork disc is a universal indicator that the person who owns the bike has no idea what they are doing.
>>
>>1019458
Except a saddlebag let's you store stuff like a spare tube and multi-tool and patches with the bike so you never have to worry about where it is when you remove it from your jersey to do laundry.

I'm thinking of getting one of those cheap chinese carbon seatposts from ebay for my road bike.

Have you had any issues with chinese carbon? I'm not really worried about the carbon itself, rather the manufacturing (like where the part that holds your seat attaches to the tube).

Kinda worried because failing seatposts can cause some nasty injuries.

They're called that because they are unnecessary and look ugly. The only function they serve is to prevent your chain from slipping off the outermost rear sprocket and end up in your spokes.
The only way this can happen is if your rear derailleur is set up incorrectly. There's absolutely no reason to have this thing if you know what you're doing.

It's basically a safety measure you would only need if you're an idiot. Otherwise it's just a useless piece of junk that clutters up your bike. Hence the name dork disc.

>>1019458
i tried going without one, but i feel like my pockets are so annoyingly massive if i have to keep it all there. I know some people dont bring spare tubes, Co2 cannisters and tools, but I like to, for peace of mind.
Also, regarding the dorc disc. - doesnt it prevent the chain from getting into the spokes? that happened to my last bike, and the entire rear wheel, rear shifter (shimano 105) and chain exploded while i was riding. So im kinda reluctant to remove it.

>>1019634

i personally would not go through ebay, there are more security measures in place for amazon. Issues with china carbon is pretty much QC. The stem i purchased for this build was super light carbon and it wouldnt hold the steerer tube even properly torqued with a shitton of carbon paste, the steerer tube clamp was out of spec. i bought it in august and I got a refund last sunday when i wrote a review of it on amazon, i doubt ebay would have done the same. Look at reviews and find one that isnt complete garbage. Dont get kabobbed homie

>1x roadbike with MTB cassette, giant gaps between gears

It's not a roadbike, but thanks for proving to everyone right away that you don't know what the fuck youre talking about. Also, I actually prefer big jumps in gears, means you have to shift less.

>Cable pull/mechanical discs on a bike that expensive
Again, see above. There's a bunch of advantages and disadvantages to each system, especially for hydraulic STIs which are very new and still have a bunch of problems to sort out. They're also next to impossible to maintain outside of a professional bike stop so they suck for travelling which is what I'll do with this bike. They also look fugly as hell. Why am I even explaining this? Do your research before commenting on things you know nothing about.

>Giant saddle-bar drop but still had a huge headset spacer stack

It's the largest frame they make. I`m 6"4 and have long legs. You're probably a manlet and know nothing about the struggles of finding a frame that fits at my height. This one actually comes very close. I'm used to the bar drop, I've had way worse.

Congratulations on making a complete fool of yourself with that jelly shitposting.

Youre talking to the #1 gazelle hater in the world,I hate about everything they make and do.

They used to make very study frames with very good paint that inhibits rust, the wheels and especially hubs were great(think Sachs hubs) and the overall quality was quite good.

But after about 1970 the quality started to drop and nowadays there is not a single good reason to choose a gazelle over a (usually)superior German brand.
The gazelle bikes now are just shiny, extremely shitty riding with stupid overpriced gimmicks and parts that keep on breakin.
And the worst part is that people still think gazelle is the best brand like evaaar.
So no,I absolutely don't think gazelle's are worth it.

My one rides pretty sweet though,I dunno yet how old it is but I inherited from my granny who died at like 92,I did make a fucktonne of modifications to make it ride this nice tho.

>>
>>1020055
No, you can make the chain much shorter than that. If you bought that thing prebuilt I have no idea why the manufacturer made it so short, or maybe that was down to the bike shop.

To get the chain the right length separate it at the quick disconnect link (if you don't already have one then get one). Let all the air out of your shock and get someone to push on the seat to compress it all the way and then wrap the chain around the chainring and largest cog but not through the derailer, add a couple links to the length needed to do so. Then run it back through the derailer and reconnect the ends.
>>
>>1019974
>>1019984
Now that I've had a chance to give this setup a decent ride in good weather (it was hella windy last night), it rides beautifully for being put together the way it is. I just might need to bring the handlebars a little closer to me but otherwise I love it
>>
>>1020163
Is there a video or some pictures you can show me? What length should I set it to and how would I measure it?
>>
>>1020255
This may help: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html#chain

I can't tell you the exact length, it varies from frame to frame and with different gearing. The chain only needs to be long enough to wrap around the largest cog (with the suspension compressed) plus a few links.

You can find some images of how it should look here:

Ah
My lbs has to rebuild my hub on my fixed gear that I use as a beater every 6-8 months because I don't have the tools and it gives me a chance to hang out there and learn a bit about maintenance
Sounds like you might want to make sure your cones are tightened too
Also sometimes manufacturers put plastic rings and stuff in hubs to keep dust out and things like that
I had a crushed one that was making horrible sounds on my rides
But all in all the service is 12 bucks and takes like 30 minutes
Good luck anon

Well, I live in San Antonio. Here, it's very much urban-ish but very hilly with weirdly, you may not expect this, miles long city-built trails running 10's of miles throughout the city. You may be riding through rush hour traffic in the medical district, see a grove of trees to pull off into and next thing you know you're thrashing around on paved and unpaved windy and rough stuff combined, come out hours later near a ghetto ass shopping mall on the west/northwest side.
>>

I ride a fixed gear as my daily beater
I've ridden probably close to a thousand miles in the 6-8 months I've owned it
I have a front brake on it and I almost never use it

I don't even know how to skid yet I still get by even though I have the brake for emergencies or days where my legs are extra tired
Your wrong shut up
>>
>>1020870
I've ridden coaster brake bikes (not my own) which are functionally the same as fixed when it comes to slowing down. It's also makes logical sense if you actually think about it, but perhaps that's expecting too much from a brakeless fixie riding hipster.

You have a lot more control on fixed gear than with a coaster brake, not even close to being the same thing.

The CAAD10 and Giro Foray helmet is a perfect entry combo. You could ride that set up for a couple of years before the need or want of upgrading to carbon. Even the helmet is a good price and it looks like the more expensive Synthe at a fraction of the price. You need to lose the dork disc and slam that stem though.
>>
>>1020847
Ayyy, happened to me too. Left me with a concussion, whiplash, and a brand new broken CAAD10. I had both brakes at my disposal, I even locked my wheels and skidded while pulling them. Nothing I could have done could have changed the outcome. The driver should have looked and yielded to bicycle traffic on the bike path.

Non-roadie here, what does compact actually refer to? Lower gearing?

I always assumed it referred to a small difference in chainring size, for example 52/39 may be considered compact but 52/36 wouldn't be (just example numbers). What would be the correct term for something like this? I would think perhaps "close ratio" but I don't think I've ever seen that mentioned.

Been a couple weeks since I built this up now and I've got the fit dialled in. Dropped the stem a bit and levelled the saddle + shifted it forwards a bit since this picture. Will get some proper chorus shifters when I can afford it. Might try and find an original flite too since that was the saddle of choice when this frame was made.

Rides real nice though, super stiff frame and the closest thing to an 'aero' bike I've owned.

Also, you can't really claim to be anti-meme when you're riding a 29er with a dropper post. What dropper is that anyway?

Similar to the recoil, it's a Nishiki Wasatch expert frame, which is a rebadged Santa Cruz Superlight.
Full ano frame, pretty nice.

It's a TMARS dropper, which I give a 7.9/10. Long travel, simple design (gravity dropper copy), and it's taken an absolute beating but won't die. It's a bit heavy and the remote isn't the most comfy thing (thinking of getting a different one), but for 85$ bucks it's great.

Not particularly, but they're not slow either. They're built tougher than fast road slicks and have a small amount of water displacement tread which makes them slower. However they're still quicker than a bombproof city tyre like a marathon plus for example, by virtue of weight and the suppleness from not having a really thick anti-puncture band. They'll also be faster than anything with knobbles or a deep tread.

The only modifications I am making are new (brown) bar tape, a new (to match the rear) front tyre and perhaps a new saddle. It came with factory mudguards, I have removed them but will keep if I decide to sell it on.

Yes. They're amazing tires. Just make sure to get the PT version, not the standard, because the standard is very prone to punctures.

Looks uncomfortable. Every time I see someone ride by riding on the drops they look so awkward. Unless they're sprinting, bombing down a huge hill, or fighting against headwind, of course.

Any additions to my improved-aesthetics checklist? So far I have

> cut down steerer

> matching bottle cages

> smaller saddlebag

> replace bar tape (probably black or gray)

>>
>>1021972
>black or gray
No way, white bartape is what you need for that bike (matches saddle, and decals). Try Fizik Microtex, it's easy to keep clean.
>>
>>1022030
how does it compare to lizard skins dsp which is the other tape I'd been considering?
>>
>>1022043
The Fizik tape is smooth, the Lizard has a grippy surface texture. They're both good, which you should use comes down to preference.

Sorry about my ignorance, but why canti brakes? V-brake has better performance, but almost no cx use them. There's must be a reason for that.
>>
>>1022263
The main reason is probably the difference in cable pull.
>>
>>1022263
Cantis are standard equipment on CX bikes because V-brakes aren't compatible with normal road brake levers.
>>
>>1022268
>>1022267
Are there v-brake-compatible road brake levers?
Or some kind of adaptor?
>>
>>1022270
Both exist: Tektro RL520 levers work with V-brakes, but obviously if you use them that means you can't run brifters. And there are V-brake adaptor pulleys, but they're fidly to setup and can damage your brake cables. There are also mini-V brakes that are compatible with standard road levers, but they're expensive.

Perhaps more importantly, if someone really wants/needs more braking power than good cantilevers can provide, these days it makes a lot more sense to get a CX bike with disc brakes than to bother with a marginal upgrade to their rim brakes.
>>
>>1022270
To expand further, road calipers and canti brakes have a short cable pull, whereas v-brakes have a long cable pull.

Try to use road levers with V-brakes, and you won't be able to pull enough cable to move the pads against the rim. Try to use modern MTB levers with cantis or road calipers, and you won't have enough mechanical advantage to apply pressure to the brakes - the lever will feel *very* firm in the hand and good in the stand, but it'll brake like shit out in the real world.

Yes, there are some long-pull (v-brake) compatible drop bar levers -I know both Cane Creek and Tekro make some - but no brifters, so you're stuck with bar-ends shifters (either actually on the end of the bars, converted to thumb shifters with Paul's Thumbies, or mounted on the brake lever hood with Gevenall's brake levers).

In addition to cantis, there are also mini-V brakes that are compatible with short-pull road levers. IIRC, Paul's, Tektro, and TRP all make some of these. They're super nice - a LOT of stopping power with light lever feel, but you have to set the pads very close to the rim; much closer than with cantis. So they're less forgiving of out-of-true wheels and can pack up with mud fast.

There are also adapters to mix & match long and short pull brake components. The most common type is the offset concentric pulley type - search for the Problem Solver's "Travel Agent". It's a pretty ugly hack, fiddly to set up right, and eats brake cables.
>>
>>1022028
Husband must be a manlet, then. It's a 46cm frame with 650c wheels
>>
>>1022263
Also mud clearance, v-brakes can get clogged much faster
>>
>>1022043
Lizard Skins falls apart pretty easily IMO, one little nick in the thin grippy layer on the surface turned into a giant hole and it just peeled apart

Also followed instructions and didn't stretch it so that's not why it ripped
>>
>>1022375
Are mini-v's nice enough to be compared with regular road calipers? My waifu has a steel cx Masi that she likes to use as a road bike, but the tektro oryx brakes that came stock with it are pretty shit. I'd like to take her out on the highway for the first time and since it's impossible to use regular road calipers on that bike, I'd like to find the next best thing.

Yep, those are the ones.

TRP CX8.4 are nearly half the price, $150 for a set instead of $285.

Tektro 926 are a screaming deal at under $30 for a set.

Just converted the Leopard over to single speed for winter commuting.

>Inb4 cranks are fucked
I'm aware. First time working on a cottered crank and I fucked up. Fixing it tomorrow.
>>
>>1023341
Just preplace them with square taper cranks. More choice of chainrings, more adjustability, and cartridge bearing BB.
>>
>>1023365

That's the long term plan. At the moment I just need new cotter pins (stripped threads) and to not put it the pins the wrong way next time.

They weren't that bad to work on really. Just different.
>>
>>1023341
that chainring is beautiful
>>
>>1023481

Thanks. This is why I'm keeping the cottered cranks for now. If I ever wear that thing out I'll probably switch to a cartridge bb, but for now that thing looks cool and works fine.
