Thinking of buying one of these today for daily commute and light riding on the weekend. Replacing a Jamis Coda. Am i making a mistake?

Those tires probably aren't great for road commutes, but you will love the STIs and the full fenders stock is great. How much is it?

Is that an aluminium fork?

Rolling resistance is meant to be really good for a MTB style tyre. Puncture resistance not good tho, might swap for some schwalbe marathon.
I found one on sale for about USD $1075 (I'm in Aus so AUD $1420)

yes unfortunately, I'm telling myself that as my commute is only 5k each way it will be OK (?)

i used to commute 6km to school on a rusty old mountainbike, weighing 27kg. so this will be a walk in the park with this bike. - remember to get a pump and always carry a spare tube, and your good to go :)

Bike deserves Supremes if you go Schwalbe.
I think an aluminum fork is fine with fat tires. Really none of that matters when you are running 35c at 50 psi

Don't forget to factor in the cost of non-shitty replacements such as Spyres. Alternatively you could go flat bar and get hydros and maybe even save some money for a similarly specced bike.

If there was a mini-v model I'd tell OP to get that instead
Fuck any mechanical disc brake that isn't Spyre or maybe... MAYBE... BB7

BB7 are still junk single piston just like the BB5.

I would never trade in a steel bike for an aluminium one.
