90s rigid mountain meme
>>

b-but I dont have any mountains, or even hills.
>>
Any bike will do
>>
>>1014584
Move to a place with mountains
>>
A buddy of mine has disc brakes on his. They're good for mountain biking, or trail riding.
>>
Just buy literally any bike that fits. Only things to steer away from are department stores.
>>

Buy from a bike shop.
Any bike will do, as long as it has brakes, can pedal backwards and has multiple gears
Commuting to/from work if possible is an efficient way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine.
Many bike shops will let you test the bikes so find one that's comfortable and fits you.
Never, ever buy a bike from walmart/whatever department store if you value what little money you have.

This. Older mountain bikes are fine for city riding. A cruiser bike will be fine too, since you don't even have hills. Mountain bikes are better off road than cruisers, but both bikes are fine for simple trails. Cruisers are the most reliable type of bike since they have fewer components. Fully rigid MTBs are built just as tough though. The typical cruiser is 1 speed. Most mountain bikes have derailleurs and a fairly large number of gears. 1 speed MTBs are enthusiast bikes and most are not super cheap (The Nashbar one is $400, the best deal for a 1speed MTB with disc brakes). Cruisers usually have a coaster brake which stops the rear when you pedal backwards. MTBs usually have cantilever or disc brakes. My Diamondback 29er has disc brakes. I think disc brakes are overrated because they get bent easily and become noisy without correct maintenance. They stop well when wet.

Some of them are OK, but usually the components/suspension are poor quality. I also hear a lot of complaints about tubes. Always assemble them yourself or have a bike shop do it. I have a Walmart $150 cruiser bike and love it, it has lasted a few years of heavy use. OP doesn't want chink shit though, so stay away from department stores I guess.

>can pedal backwards
That's not necessary. I ride my cruiser on hiking trails all the time and the coaster brake won't let me do that.
>>
>>1014951
I wouldn't pedal fast enough for cardio as OP plans on a bike that can't coast. Pedals would beat OP's legs/ankles as they continue to spin.
>>

I was talking about pedaling backwards (coaster brake can coast, but pedaling backwards stops the bike), not fixed gear. I wouldn't recommend a fixie either anon.
>>
>>1014581
walmart bike, mines been fine, brakes needed to be fixed before the first month though
mine is 29 inches, so not bad for $161
