This one is going to take much longer and updates will be slower

>1973

Cannondale were the first company to push bike touring, which they called "bikepacking" in this catalog. That word took on another meaning recently

Here is there first catalog offering
>>
> 1973 (cont)

Here is their "bugger" trailer. I wonder if this sold well in the UK?
>>
> 1973 (cont.)

One Bugger model carried kids
>>
> 1974

Nothing really new in this catalog but you see the bike touring products come before the hiking equipment they were primarily selling in 1973. The shift towards a cycling company

Here is an image of a train station at the end of both the 73 and 74 catalogs. You can see where the original Cannondale logo design came from

I fucked up, these are all from the second 1983 catalog, not 1984

Keep that in mind. First cannondale bike was 1983. the 1984 catalog is next

The Cannondale SM-300. 24" rear, 26" front. Rumor has it that they couldn't get the rear triangle right and were forced to use 24". Unsubstantiated.

This has to be the most insane PR blurb I've ever seen...

1. "The stiffest production frame in the world"
2. "Ride 100 miles without experiencing the bone-jarring fatigue of harsh riding steel frames"

24" wheel continues
>>
> 1984 (cont.)

I think this one has been overlooked by history, but it looks like a modern flat bar touring bike.

It's a town/country bike. But looks awesome for touring. Widest tires of the bunch at 26x1.5"

This bike has dual 26" wheels, so I think the myths about the 24" rear on the ATB can be silenced. Cannondale probably actually believed in the 24 rear design
>>
>>1014464
>>1014467

Now I'm remembering the conspiracy theory about the 24" rear had to do something with the brakes and the seatstays.

Looking at both of these I'm wondering why they aren't canti in the rear

Maybe there is some truth to it. The canti's flexing the seatstays too much probably
>>
> 1984 (cont.)

Interesting claims:

1. Aluminium is stiff AND shock absorbant

2. Aluminum does not fatigue with time
but it will with "use"
Bad Boy Scalpel is too weird not to post

29er when? You're putting 700c wheels on mtb frames for christ's sake

I think cannondale officially lost their way in 2000-2002, looking at these catalogs

The basic road and MTB offerings are solid. The rest of the line looks insane. Also the paint jobs have become hideous

Cannondale filed for bankruptcy protection in 2003. They'd been trying to sell Motorcycles and ATVs since the late 90s

I think you can tell by the quality of the 2001-2002 catalogs that things had turned to shit and bad ideas were getting passed along the line due to negligence, financial issues, etc

One track frame was being sold as a "messenger" frame. Carbon fork. Can't tell if the geometry was different

This year was mostly a train wreck, aesthetically

The motorcycle division was sold off and the company is now owned by Pegasus Capital Advisors - an investment firm (who are going to start outsourcing frame production and capitalize on the Cannondale name.)

Very sad
>>
>>1015332

>>1015338

They are gippemme. I had a set on the 2003 r800

That's about it for Cannondale.

You can see where Surly took over on innovation in the early 2000s.

They were beautiful bikes. If we could have had a Made In USA cannondale still going, beating Surly at their game, they would have been the greatest bike company of all time

RIP

Can you do this with other companies? Godly thread, thanks
