Beach cruisers, roadsters, and related bikes.

I bought a cheap Wal-Mart aluminum frame cruiser for $150 three years ago and it held up surprisingly well. Mine looks like this, minus lights and fenders. It is a nice bike for trail and off-road use.

Do you anons think cruisers should be single speed, 3 speed hub, or have a full cassette derailleur? Do you think a coaster brake is good enough? I like the traditional single speed coaster setup.
>>
>>1010507
I like a simple nexus 3 coaster brake hub onna cruiser.

But I hate cruisers anyway.
>>
>>1010519
Since you are apparently a Schwalbe enthusiast, is the Big Apple a good cruiser tire? This is a 29er so it should use the 55-622 tire.
>>
>>1010507
>Do you anons think cruisers should be single speed, 3 speed hub, or have a full cassette derailleur? Do you think a coaster brake is good enough?
3-speed is a lot nicer than 1, but 7- or 8-speed makes the bike a WHOLE lot nicer.
The nexus-7 hub you can get with a coaster brake. I think the 8-speed only comes with a roller brake. Which still works good for casual use too. Just no mountain descents.

>Since you are apparently a Schwalbe enthusiast, is the Big Apple a good cruiser tire? This is a 29er so it should use the 55-622 tire.
(I am not poster #2 but anyway)
The problem you have with using the FAT Big Apple is that it is so fat that it will not fit under most fenders--if you wanted fenders at all.
Not only is it wide, but the outer diameter is really big too. It tends to rub most fenders at the front mounting bolt and rear edge.
About the only bikes it really fits "good" on is MTBs, that were made for knobbies about that big to begin with. And MTBs rarely ever have full fenders.
>>
Living in a hilly city, I wouldn't buy anything without a full cassette. But in a flat area a single speed or 3-speed hub would be fine.
>>
>>1010524
>The problem you have with using the FAT Big Apple is that it is so fat that it will not fit under most fenders--if you wanted fenders at all.

It should fit fine, I took the fenders off anyway. They tend to get messed up rather easily on the cheap bikes. The main issue with the bike is that the rims and tube are kind of weird, and some people say it needs an extra long valve stem. I think 29ers are a long way from taking over the cruiser market at least.

OP here, this is what it looks like now. Finally removed the chain guard because it kept slapping going over bumps.
>>
>>1010888
replace your chain, mane
>>
>>1010890
I'll measure it before I ride it next time. I never realized the chain looks worn out. In person it doesn't look nearly that bad.
>>
I put 2.5" maxxis grifters on my Surly ECR and it's like the sickest beach cruiser ever.
>>
>>1010507
I still have most of the parts of a cruiser I built in the 1970's- just has a different frame these days. I prefer single speed coaster brake, but my cruiser serves no practical purpose, so...
>>
Would love an electric cruiser with a vintage motorcycle look

Nexus 7 CB is fun, and useful while letting you maintain clean lines. Here's mine.
>>
>>1010971
Yeah, my tires are wearing out and I need new ones soon. I have a used pair of Schwalbe Rapid Robs with some tread still left. Not sure if a 2.5" would fit. I think it would. It is pretty quick for a single speed, I can go up moderate hills fine, and there was a speed radar sign going up a mild hill and I did 20 pretty easily.

>>

I want to paint it too, any color suggestions? The only problem with painting it is that it's my only good "backup" bike. I guess I got a shitty road bike I could ride while the paint dries on this and if my mountain bike needed a tube or something.

Here is a clunker version of my bike someone made. Where do they get the extra wide BMX style bars? I think I have some old junk bikes at the old house that could loan a set of bars.
>>
Actually, when I look around there really aren't a huge number of 29er cruisers still. 26" is far from being replaced by any other size. There are also some 27.5" cruisers but even less common.

There are 2.2" grifters IIRC, good value tyres.

I looked at the Torch, look like good cruiser tires. 29" is still a non standard size for cruisers so most are knobby.

I think they are BMX cruiser bars. My 24" Diamondback Reactor has similar bars. I won't rip apart a nice BMX to put parts on a cheap cruiser though.

>>1016475
The extreme chopper-style geometry doesn't appeal to me. I like a relaxed position but not backwards. Cool for an ebike though.
>>
I thought about buying one of the Huffy ones from Wal-Mart (Nel Lusso or the Deluxe) just because it has a thick steel cargo rack welded directly to the frame. I'm thinking it might make a decent cargo bike Are there any higher quality bikes that have this?
>>
>>1016475
This is exactly what I want!
Electric chopper

How did you attach the battery though.

>not Fat Franks

Shit tier desu. They even managed to fit under the steel fender that came stock on my Schwinnn cruiser. (this being on MTX33 rims.)
>>
>>1018141
Fat Franks look like a traditional cruiser tire. Whatever I get, I want something that won't be quickly worn down by coaster brake induced skidding.

Found a 1977-79ish Schwinn Spitfire in the basement. I haven't rode it since 3rd grade. We got it from a garage sale many years ago and it was covered in green paint. What should I do with it?

Looks like this, but spray painted green. Tires look okay; no signs of dry rot. I think it weighs 45 lbs.
>>
>>1024477
Turns out it could be a 1980s cruiser too. They renamed the Spitfire to just the "Cruiser" and made it till 1985. It has the white wall tires, but it has the paint on it and I can't reach the thing (jammed in TIGHT with around 10 other bikes). Some bikes are hanging above it too, so I'll need help to get it out.
>>
>>1010507
>Do you think a coaster brake is good enough?
For riding in traffic? Probably not. For 99% of everything else, sure, why not.
>>
>>1024829
I don't mind riding in mild traffic with one when not going downhill. I rode one as my daily college commuter for around 2 years on a fairly hilly route with no close calls though. The Schwinn cruiser, if I can get it out, would maybe have more trouble on hills since it is much heavier than my aluminum cruiser.

can someone explain why some cruiser riders have their handlebars pointed to the sky like pic related? I see it all the time (live in SoCal) and it looks uncomfortable as fuck.
>>
>>1024835
What I mean to say is that any sort of rear-wheel-only braking system isn't going to stop you in an emergency as effectively as a front+rear breaking system.
>>
>>1024836
Because tweakers.
>>
>>1011054
noice.
>>
>>1024836
A lot of cruiser bike people only care about looks. I want them to be at a comfortable angle. Same with the seat, I want to have a decent pedal stroke instead of making it really low.
>>
>>1024858
True. My MTB with disc brakes is having trouble with the front (rotor out of true?) so I get about the same performance.

I want to get the Schwinn out but it's stuck under a giant pile of bikes in a confined space. WTF is this? Looks like a chopper bike and there are two of them. There are also 4 sting rays and a POS mountain bike stuck there. There are also 2 BMX bikes and a World Sport down there.

Here is the Schwinn. It nearly fell apart riding it to the other house. The 37 year old tires were fine. I need to re-tighten and lube everything else.
>>
I want to see a cruiser with drop bars and garbon wheels.
>>
>>1026795
Wouldn't be comfortable with drop bars I think. I thought about it, but the seating posture isn't good for a tuck position. I could try it, but my only drop bar bike right now is a POS with grip shifters.

I haven't seen that exactly, but here's an upright with garbon wheels.
>>
>>1026795
I wish they made nylon wheels in a 26" size just for nostalgia's sake. We still have a lot of old 20" wheels in the old house's basement. I think plastic wheels were weak and heavy though.
>>
>>1026795
Do they even make them in 26"? I thought they were for road bikes. I guess my 29er cruiser could use carbon wheels maybe.
>>
Is this garbon?
>>
>>1027187
Steel.
>>
>>1027232
I googled "carbon cruiser". I guess the lower tube is too narrow to be carbon. It still looks badass though.
>>
>>1010507
that bike looks so fine... except, i'm used to MTBs. Are these frames usable/comfy with more straighter steers? and can it be made to have more speed? eg. 21 speed gears
>>
>>1027240
No it doesn't
>>
>>1027241
There is a version of this bike with a rear derailleur. Not sure if it has a front or not. I have seen some using BMX bars but IDK how comfy it is.

These aluminum walmart cruisers are really good. Only weighs about 29 lbs, cost $100, and rides great.
>>
>>1028096
The Kent cruisers are decent quality. My 29" Genesis bike works great after 3.5 years with no maintenance except tire and tube changes. Wal-Mart should stick to these kind of bikes instead of selling a dual suspension POS that jiggles around.

haha you have the same concerns as the OGS in the 60s/70s when modified cruisers where the first mtbs 'klunkers'

of course you could add gear range

low trail steering is kind of nice though

reddit: the bike

I think it's more of an old fart bike than anything. Redditors don't like cruisers since they have been around forever and are a very traditional kind of bike. I like them because they are very cheap and simple bikes.

The back wheel was seriously out of true, so I won't be riding that anytime soon.

Here is the cruiser with the new Geax (made by Vittoria) tires. They are pretty sweet with the wraparound tread like on BMX freestyle tires. I was so happy to ride it through the yard until I ended up having to spray the dog shit off of them.

Are 29ers going to be the standard for cruiser bikes eventually? Cruiser bikes lent mountain bikes the 26" wheel and it may come back full circle. There are a few 27.5" cruisers at department stores. Haven't found any really good ones yet.
>>
>>1029811
I might want to get a fresh set of fenders. Rode 4 miles home in the rain and fairly strong wind. Lots of puddles. Coaster brakes work very well in wet conditions, fortunately. Probably need lights too since I came home around 7pm.
