Anybody else sick of this hipster bullshit meme?

No, your rigid 90s MTB is not cool. It is slow on the road, shit on mountains, and basically useless for anything serious.

You meme'd your way into a shit bike. Great job

correct, I won't be riding my gt in a race anytime soon

OP, you're completely missing the point of a bike like this.
The reason people love these bikes is because if you maintain them, they are reliable as fuck. The parts are so standardized that you can find replacements for everything on it for almost nothing. They're cheap to buy and cheap to keep running.

No they aren't fast, but they aren't all that slow either. They can't go on real trails, but they're fine riding on gravel.

They're the perfect bike for causually riding around town when you don't care how fast you're going

Oh shit, it's a meme? I just bought one a couple days ago, I'm new to /n/ and bicycles in general.

Also I've been meaning to ask if I overpaid for it. I paid $200, it's a norco frame and the bike shop said they refurbished it, everything but the frame seems to be new, it has a new shimano derailleur and sprockets, and some other entry level but brand name components.

I didn't think it was such a bad price considering I can take it to them any time and get it serviced for free
>>
ehhh, i think that everybody in this thread needs to calm down.
they're just bikes.
if it makes the person happy, if they like their bike, it is a good bike.
it isn't supposed to be a racing bike, or whatever you think it should be.

Compass tires. Pictured are the 700C x 35mm (Bon Jon Pass), but they make a variety of widths for 26", 650B, and 700C. If you care about tubeless, pay attention - only the newer ones (700C x 44mm and 35mm, 650B x 48mm, 26" x 2.3" and 1.8") have tubeless-compatible casings.

Compass tires are excellent, they're made by Panaracer and are essentially Paselas with upgraded casings (first gen Compass tires even used the Pasela mold for their tread).

Here's my current 90's MTB with Compass 26x1.75 tires. It's stupid fun to ride, especially around tight corners at speed (low center of gravity, MTB geometry requires lots of countersteer, round profile tires), makes me want to try a minivelo.

It's a very small meme that only exists in a handful of places online. As to whether your coworker is actively participating in the game or not, you'll have to look closely at his ride, because there are two kinds of bikes in this category:

1. Ordinary mountain bikes that are largely unchanged except for their tires - these belong to people who wanted a cheap commuting bike.

2. Mountain bike frames that have been deliberately repurposed in a way that allows the owner to express their creativity and mechanical skills - these are custom bikes that don't draw much attention except from fellow mechanics and enthusiasts.

warning: this is a serious post with a serious concern. if you guys can help me it would be cool. not beeing sarcastic.
so i re-discovered riding bikes again like 2 years ago. it started like an easy way to doing stuff near home, to beeing one of the things where i invest most of my time (besides work), i currently ride 40-60km 3-4 times a week plus a 80-100km, im starting to train more seriously and im always pushing myself. on a local hill where a lot of people train i usually beat everyone or 90% of the people there, a lot of them in expensive road/xc bikes (yes, some of them may be freds, but some are serious and i can at least keep their pace, 90% of the time). the thing is that im very excited about riding right now..
heres the thing.. ive been riding a late 90s hardtail till this moment. its a semi high end bike of that time so it aint shit. but still, its a late 90's hardtail. i use 1.50 slicks on it, and ride on roads 99% of the time. 80% of my riding is in the city cause its a huge ass city... anyway, i have money so im thinking in buying a proper bike. dont wanna go crazy in money spending but i dont mind droping something like 1-1.5k. maybe used cause theres a big marked here.

heres where i need your advice.. what kind of bike should i buy?im doing road.. but the city has harsh streets, its not strange to be bunny hopping large pots (50cm wide aprox)..and i dont know.. im just used to these 1.5wide tires and not sure if a road bike will give me the strengh to be riding with confidence in shit roads side by side or in between cars. at the same time i want a bike that will get me even more involved with riding. aka riding fast.

what should i do? i really appreciate your guys feedback as i ride alone and have no bike buddies here...so the voice of more experienced riders would be great. and sorry for my crap english, it aint my main languague obviously.

thanks!

get a propper road bike. somehting like a specialized allez or maybe a rose or something , ask the bbg thread.
keep your current bike for commuting and use the other one for training and stuff like this.
also get a cheap kit and a helment

and some bottlecages , don't forget to hydrate !

Here's something I've always wondered, and I guess this'll be the right thread to post because I wanted to build a hard frame commuter with mtb tires.

Why can't they make hybrid tires with an extra thick strip of rubber going down the centre for roads to keep the mtb tread lugs off the asphalt , but dig into dirt when on a trail?

literally this image, but A: why isn't it more common B: is it going to work or will I have a slow bike with less traction?

Cheapest option would be to get aero on your current frame -- take it to a shop and tell the guys to slap a drop bar on it.

Will cost around $200 / $300 if you want STI shifters. STI + handlebars + new stem + tape + mini Vs... yes pricey

But if you wanna go fast in the city fat tire road style bikes like a cyclocross bike are the way to do it. CX bikes will have shorter chainstays which = faster handling compared to a touring bike.

I think I read something (and it might have been jan heine's propaganda) about those sorts of tyres where the knobs on the tyres make them squirrely as shit on tarmac and the grip isn't enough when it gets super sloppy.

>>1010027
>>1009967
I've tried out tires like this before - band of smooth in the middle for pavement, knobs on the side for dirt. They never live up to expectations.

They're usually overly-heavy with too-stiff sidewalls to be comfy on the road. They're not confidence inspiring on road descents - try to lean in a turn and you're on the knobs, and you suddenly have way less rubber on the road and lose traction right when you need it the most.

They near-universally suck off road - you're on the snooth center portion while going straight, so good fucking luck climbing on the loose stuff...

XC mountain bike tires that are meant to roll fast on hard-pack dirt will usually do acceptably both on and off the road.

Not all beach cruisers are as heavy as you think, especially aluminum ones. I like single speed, but derailleur + cassette and internal hubs are very common these days on cruisers. Cruiser bars take getting used to for sure, but are comfy. You can actually tuck on them easier than with flat bars.

Like $50-100. The bikes are memes because they're cheap and practical. If they're no longer cheap they're no longer practical. A lot of it is a reaction to the fact that most hybrids are BSOs with suspension forks, and city bikes are expensive, and 90's rigid MTBs can fill the same niche but for much less given they're 20 years old and not appreciated because people want suspension new MTBs and they make shitty fixies.

I've done a 700C conversion (disk brakes so IDGAF)

Two big differences:

1) BB is hilariously high off the ground. Sky-high.

2) Bigger wheel = more steering trail. SUPER stable steering. Great for no-hands riding, not great on decreasing-radius corners on steep descents. Really gotta be comfortable leaning in fast corners.
>>
>>1012312

Stem is temporary

MTB drop bar conversions need short stems. Top tubes on these bikes are very long

I'm 6'5, higher the saddle goes the farther back you go. Add that to talk people usually having all their height in your legs and you get a weird setup like mine

The stem is 45mm and I'm going to go to 70mm
>>
>>1012338

Thanks.

I have a bike with 90mm trail and it is super stable with loads and when going fast, but slow speed handling is balls
>>
>>1012338

Bought a late 80s/early 90s ATB because it was the best balance of quality and cost off my local craigslist. Stuck the 26x2.0 semislicks and fenders off my old bike (a newer MTB) on it.

It's top tier for riding around a college campus.
>faster than a standard mountain bike and any cheaper road bike on pavement
>can go on grass, gravel, and dirt paths without trouble
>weaving through crowds at high speed is easy with wide tires flat bars
>fenders keep the rain and mud off
>doesn't stand out on a bike rack

Durable as fuck. I've put my baby through a few tours and thousands of miles and shes still kicking.

Sexy. You cannot tell me that the geometry on the 90's rigid mtb's is not mouth watering.

Easy to maintain and customize.

I like the DGAF setup with the 1x etc

canitlevers look a little crazy with the yoke that high but I don't know shit about them

>>
>>1012705

Yeah they could be adjusted, but as of right now they stop hard.
>>
>>1012706
>>1012705
Long pull, strong stopping.

Does it have to do with the brake levers? I only know about MTB stuff, do those levers have a pretty long pull?
>>
>>1012707

Yeah they have a pretty long pull. I'd like to try a few different straddle cables to mess with the yoke angle to see if I can get some better performance out of the setup. It stops on a dime, but I still think there some room for improvement.

>>

Completely new to /n/, thought it would be cool to visit all boards in 4chan today.

What's wrong with rigid mountain bikes? I know one with a suspension would be so much better, but what other alternative do I have for a city with awful roads? A fixed gear bike? That's slow as shit. Those extralight racing bikes (sorry for not knowing the proper name) would die and I would die too if I bump into a tiny rock or just any of the dangers of shitty uneven roads.

Rigid mountain bikes have hears and are cheap enough to use in cities, so what's exactly wrong with them?

Hi folks, i'm getting a new bike and tossed between:
>Giant Propel Advanced Pro 1 (pic related)
>Felt AR3

There's a local bike shop that wants to sell me the AR3 for 3000 bucks (1000 cheaper than the retail price) so it's like 800 cheaper than the giant (unless giant make me a deal too) but the giant has more proper aero wheels.

halp, also if you want to recommend something different, Im looking for something that can be a general road bike and has the geometry for time trialing and these two seem to fit that.

not bad for a cheap commuter.
make sure you get some actual lights on it, reflectors aren't enough
also, the chain is in small/small, which you shouldn't ride in. Read about how to shift well on: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gears.html

If you need nay maintnence help, post in the /bqg/ and we'll help you out.

Can't help much on the saddle or helmet since I ride hobo saddle and no helmet, but I'm sure someone will have a rec.

Maybe consider slicker tyres, but it doesn't really matter too much

Your bike is a rigid steel MTB.

It has cantilever brakes, which were replaced with V-brakes and later disc-brakes

It has a threadless fork and a quill stem.

The wheels are 26"

The tires are "tanwall" an older style

You have a triple crankset

I don't know how many speeds in the rear but it is good to know. I would guess 7

Your bike has trigger shifters

Thing to note:
* You have a quick release seatpost lever. Your saddle will be very easy to steal if you do not do something about that and live in a high crime area
>>

I don't go truly fast on mine - which also has pretty worn components, got it cheap and haven't been able to replace them - but I do pass nearly everyone riding around NYC, and the small turning radius really comes in handy.

He's saying 90's rigid MTBs are cheaper and OP doesn't understand how better bikes are more expensive as well. That's why 90s MTBs are popular despite being shitty. They be cheep.
>>
>>1020468
honestly, they're not even that shitty
mine rides about as well as the average entry level hybrid/city bike, and it can still go off curbs and over gravel and light singletrack easily

part of the appeal is that for the price of a $50 used 90s mtb you can get a better commuter/beater than for $300-$400 on a new bike
>>
>>1020468
>That's why 90s MTBs are popular despite being shitty.
They aren't shitty at all.
They make cool af everyday beaters.
>>
Can anyone help me choose a rigid '90s MTB for commuting/beater under $200?

I'm in the Phoenix area and my inseam is 32. I'm looking for something that's rideable that I can improve on. Just need a secondary form of transportation and I'm poor.

here's a pretty good deal. its right at your limit, but set up for commutting and comes with a pump
https://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/bik/5844647532.html

for a bit less, but functional:
https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/bik/5822682658.html

not a 90s mtb, just a standard new-ish commuter, but cheap as fuck. you'd need to be tall to ride it though

Look you faggots, I don't know where you ride most of the time but for the country side and all but the shittiest woodland trails they are great, you aren't peddeling a tank on the roads and if you blame the tires for not being able to do a trail you just flat out suck.

They are very pleasant and convenient tires unless you insist on being an elitist douche who hates any sorts of convenience and lives for optimal performance over any sort of practicality.
>>
>>1020321

>>1015262
Why the fuck sell the Pauls. They're cool, give the bike character and he got them for dirt cheap with the rest of the bike.

Ur dumb. He should just upgrade tires and saddle - it sounds like he did - and appreciate the good deal he got on a good bike as he's shit ripping through town.

look for marin, trek, kona, diamond back and such.

I generally look for something with a slight slope in the geometry and and maybe a stx rc group set.

just browse through some galleries you'll "learn the look" pretty fast.

I actually think aluminum beach cruisers are lighter since they have less stuff on them than mountain bikes. Compared to a 90s rigid steel MTB with the same wheel size, they are probably light.

Love the bike. I'm a bit leery of Velocity wheels, though. I had an A23 set and a Dyad set that both dented badly right on the sleeve joint. I've had no trouble from welded rims like DTSwiss and Mavic. Looking at the 36-spoke DTSwiss TK540 for my next 700C rim-brake touring bike wheelbuild.

The cheapest aluminum one at Wal-Mart is 27 lbs with chain guard and fenders removed. That's lighter than a Wal-Mart road bike. I'm not sure about the 29er version, which is what I have. But 90s MTBs are pretty much only 26", so that doesn't matter.
