Looks like you must harden the fuck up and ride more until you can get a more aero position, maybe lowering your back a bit.
Theres a method that is useful to some people (it worked for me), take the lower bars and look at the wheel's hub, if your stem/reach is correct, you shouldn't be able to see the hub because it's blocked by the bars. If you see the hub above the bars, you need a longer stem, and if you see the hub below the bar, you need a shorter stem.It usually works, but it's not exact because not every person has the same body proportions/flexibility.

>>
>>1008108
Good this is what i actually wanted, so I really need to get on rollers to look at my fit? or would just warming up and taking some more photos (with less baggy clothes I guess too) be ok? I didn't know warming up actually mattered.

The problem is that after a couple hours riding (or after commuting 5 days) my neck muscles get a bit sore, like cramped, tight muscles, and I thought I was extending my arms a bit too much. I kind of am in the picture but again I wasn't warmed up or anything.

>>1008123
I just did the hub thing and I can see it below my bars which "confirms" my theory I might need a shorter stem, anyway I'll check tomorrow after warming up (commuting).

I have shit back flexibility, though I'm pretty flexible everywhere else, such shit body.

Thanks m8s
>>
>>1008125
Neck discomfort can be caused because you try to have your face up, try lowering it and move your eyes more. Also you can exercise your neck at home to gain flexibility and strenght, and during rides, change your position and move your head, because if you are static all the time, you will have some discomfort, it happens to your arms/hands too.

This is a strictly utilitarian bike. Fenders, discs, rack eyelets, reasonable drop, large tyres and high-spoke count. It even has a dynamo light. That's pretty much the opposite of a hipster bike. My only petty criticism is that the gearing is -maybe- a tad high for this kind of bike.

Get ride of the dork disc and you've got a real nice commuter. If you've got a 8 spd Shimano tranmission, you could get a pair of campy 8 speed brifters for less than 100 dollarydoos.
>>
I'm getting a 1991 56 cm specialized allez epic road bike as a commuter. Old, a little small, but for 300$ it seems good. It won't be my main bike, I have a different bike I'll post when I get home and I don't want to spoil it because I am proud of it(dank Craigslist find), just for school and work commuting. It was hard finding a decent old road bike that will semi fit me in this town full of fixie riding manlets.

Young wannabe fred reporting in. Got this second hand for £100 last week. Was comfy for a fairly fast 50mi ride on the weekend...

Fairly newish to road cycling but before you say it yes I will remove the dork disk when I can get the tools, and take out one of the stem spacers when I get more confident riding in that position. But before I was using an old 7 speed steel bike with dt shifters, this is a world apart already.
>>
>>1008574
100 for that seems like an excellent deal, nice one
>>
>>1008576

Yeah thanks. I was absolutely delighted that I was so quick with the email reply to the ad. Few cosmetic scuffs on the frame, and one major problem is that the seatpost bolts are rounded so I need them drilled out nd replaced. The saddle height is managable but it could do with being a cm or two higher...hopefully it isn't too expensive a fix.
>>

Also, its kind of annoying that campag don't have adjustable reach on their brake levers like shimano and sram do. I have short stubby fingers...
>>
>>1008581
Old Shimano didn't have adjustable reach, and not so old Shimano needed shims for adjustable reach.

Its not carbon its alu but the fork and stays are carbon. Its fairly light compared to what had before, around 8.5kg compared to 10.5. I got a good deal but desu it is from 2006 and I'm not expecting it to last another ten years. However the groupset is in great condition and would sell for the same I reckon so I think I did pretty good.

Dayumm, I wanna try one of those. Might be really good for the super loose, angle of repose, slabby, rocky stuff I ride. Probably wrecks shit riding in snow. I use a 5" front tire in the winter and it's fantastic. Does it snow where you live?

I recommend getting one of these: http://www.jensonusa.com/Meiser-Accu-Gage-Dial-Pressure-Gauge

With plus and fat tires, pressure makes a massive difference in handling. Gauges that read high psi aren't accurate for very low ranges and this thing will let you tune to within 0.25psi. Makes a massive difference when I'm rarely running more than 2 psi on that tire (Vee 2XL). This thing is a monster though.

always liked that color.

bit of a mess though: memeskin on the back and schwalbe in front, long derailleur cage on a small cassette--in fact, that cassette seems too race-y for what the rest of the bike seems to be for--and the electrical tape is the main offender here.

still, a solid ride despite the flaws. you're obviously riding this for transport, you've got a long cage, you may as well throw on a wider-range cassette. is it just super flat where you are?
>>
I could afford a much nicer bike and car than I currently run, but I just don't see the point when the car I have gets just as stuck in traffic, and I'm going to be just as slow on a higher end bike. I do wear fairly expensive clothes though.

I know this isn't supposed to be here but whatever its the most suitable

I'm new to cycling and noticed that bikes are labelled by year, much like cars

Do they really improve every year? Would you notice a difference between a bike from today and one from 10 years ago?
>>
>>1009705
There are minor improvements with each model year, either newer components or some new standard or technology, but if they share the same model name they're probably not going to differ too much over a few years.

10 years can make a big difference but it depends on how far back you're going. You're probably going to find a greater difference comparing 1996 to 2006 than you will comparing 2006 to 2016, perhaps even more so if we're talking about mountain bikes.
>>
>>1008102
>riding a mountain bike without a dropper post
Really?
>>
>>1009184
Maybe one day you can move to some mountains! You should be able to visit at the least.
>>
>>1009705
Some stuff improves incrementally, but other times the "standard" changes all at once.

1978 Freehubs were introduced and started replacing freewheels.

In 1984 SIS shifters were introduced, friction systems died off almost immediately. Full carbon frames came out about this time.

6 years later integrated STI brifters became a thing.

Lots of other are effectively a thing of the past, like 26" MTBs, cottered cranks, downtube shifters, steel rims, 650c wheels, etc.

Still, don't discount old bikes, old fancy bikes are a lot of fun and much cheaper than new entry level bikes.

>>1009713
This is very accurate.
>>
>>1009784
>Lots of other are effectively a thing of the past, like 26" MTBs
Not quite. Sure there aren't many 26" complete bikes any more but the components (frames and forks, rims, tyres and tubes) are still being made and will continue to be for quite a while (if it dies out at all). I agree with the rest of it though.

what's the bike? I like the way it looks
>>
>>1009689
My derailleur detonated one day and I bought a replacement, didn't even realise they had different lengths until after it was installed.

I could go a wider cassette but I normally only replace things when they break. I bought the gatorskins on the recommendations of a work colleague. I've found them to be no better at puncture resistance than any other tyre I've had.

>is it just super flat where you are?
It's Sydney, there are plenty of small hills around, its not flat, but not mountainous either.
>>
>>1009837
congrats for never failing to cross chain, skrub.
>>
>>1009014
Yeah I live in Milwaukee so it snows but I'll probably use it year round since I don't have a proper mtb. When I went in to buy the bike at my LBS the guy recommended to buy one of those low pressure gauges. He suggested 8 psi though.
>>
>>1009860
I've found gatorskins and the like to have better puncture resistance, but still run into issues with pinch flats if I hit pot holes or don't fill my tires properly.

It lets me not worry about goatheads and glass but I still have to pay attention.
>>
>>1009867
Cool man. Might be a pig to climb but it should be a beast on the descents or gnarly terrain. Yeah the 8 psi gauge could work too, though I think they break if you try to read over the max.

You could theoretically run a 29+ wheelset in that frame for the summer if you want a bit more nimble handling.

does that setup stop your rear suspension from absorbing the down stroke?
>>
>>1009988
Do you mean the downward travel of the rear wheel? That is controlled by rebound damping. There's nothing peculiar about that suspension setup, it's just a linkage driven single pivot.
>>
>>1009995
Oh I don't know my suspensions, I meant when you pedal forwards, usually shocks take a little energy from each stroke and slow you down on straightaways or asphalt. Are there designs for this? Or maybe I'll look for something that locks out.

lube the chain, clean everything, make sure your tires are full and check your breaks to make sure they aren't rubbing and they stop the bike well

>>1010100
I'll have you know I've also got a driver's license. Poorfag though.

I've really been thinking about getting some kind of light. Are ones with a dynamo the best?

>>1010102
I guess.
>>
>>1009998
Oh right, I get what you mean. A lot of shocks lessen how much energy is wasted with compression damping (to simplify it small forces below a certain point such as pedalling won't move the shock much but larger forces can overcome the resistance).

There are also certain suspension designs that pedal better than others. One way to achieve this is to have the chain length between the cranks and wheel get longer as the suspension compresses, thus when pedalling you're pulling the rear wheel closer to the cranks and counteracting some of the force that would otherwise compress the suspension. If you wish to research it further I think this aspect is usually called either anti-squat or anti-bob.

That is like a £350 shock with adjustable compression and rebound, as well as dual flow. Also, 4 bar linkage is good at not robbing pedal efficiency.

>>1010380
That's not four bar, it's a single pivot "faux bar" that Kona often likes to do.

True single pivot is GOAT.
Giant's Maestro is breddy gud, but in my mind, simple+effective trumps 'MUH AXLE PATH'. I have maestro on my dh bike and it's fine, but pic related is my preferred full sus bike.
>>
>>1010391
But it's just another style of linkage driven single pivot, actual four bar is something completely different. Yes it technically has four bars but that term refers to a specific design that has a virtual pivot point.

The Kona faux bar is no different to any other single pivot in terms of pedalling efficiency, it can just have a different shock rate.

Mostly disassembled. Left the cranks/bb in but removed the chainrings and taped bags around the crank arms. Can obviously leave bars/stem assembled and all cables attached to the bars and put that aside. I sprayed the fork and frame separately. Put small balls of blu-tac in eyelets, etc and remove it while it's still drying.

It does seem like a pretty fragile coating, but it's completely reversible so I can just peel it all off once it gets shaggy.

Yeah, still. Definitely more rotational mass with a tire that big, as well as the huge contact patch will add some rolling resistance. On any smoother climbs it will be slower than anything else probably. Will certainly roll over stuff well for rougher climbs though yeah.

I rock 1800g (each) 3" tires most of the time and do steep climbs at 9psi... so, it's really mostly fitness in any case. Low gears are nice to have.
>>
>>1011270
This, the marginal effect of adding mass to a rotating object on its moment of inertia is quadratically proportional to the mass's distance from the axis of rotation

I literally only ride my bike to and from work and go on trails on weekend so excuse my ignorance, but according to picture 2 im supposed to be slightly hunched over while riding my mountain bike?
My bike allows me to be seated like picture number 1 but i honestly have no idea what i'm talking about so educate me if you could
>>
>>1011682
Then you either have a ridiculous amount of spacers under your stem and bars with a lot of rise or your seat is way too low. Post a picture.

Get some allen wrenches and look up how to adjust a quill stem, which is what you have.

The most alarming thing about this bike is that you do not have a front brake. It is very dangerous to ride with only one brake. If your rear brake fails coming down a hill to an intersection, you could die

Outside of that, this is a very cheap, low-quality bike. Replacing the front brake might cost more than the bike is worth. Looking for a better used bike would be the smart move. Something in the $100 range would be an improvement.

Try this one out on walking trails where there are absolutely no automobiles or hills around. If you like it, buy a new bike.

Keep this one around to steal parts off of if you want to get into bike mechanics

This bike rules.

>>
>>1011700
>>1011703
It's less about the bar height (that may possibly be dangerously too high, make sure the minimum insertion line on the stem isn't showing), the seat is way too low and that's really going to kill pedalling efficiency. Once the seat is at the correct height he can slam the stem or keep it at the same height, the only difference it's going to make to him is comfort and speed (because aero).

I honestly make too little money to invest in a new bike with living expenses and all, minimum wage worker at the place where i live i couldnt even afford a middle end bike with a full paycheck so this bike i have at the moment is the only one i got for now.
I am however dealing with the front brake situation, the brake it had was completely busted and had to be removed but i have someone who will get me a new one.
Ill try and sell this one and get something better used anyhow.
>>

you can get something better used for like $50 on craigslist

That's fine. nobody is going to give you shit for that. I'm on a strict bike budget because I keep wasting money on bullshit

Installing a front disc is going to cost some money if you want a really good one. But you can get cheap stuff on aliexpress (from asia) but shipping usually takes 3 weeks

See if there is a bike co-op around where you live. You can use their tools, and they might give you free parts or even a very very cheap bike one day
>>
>>1011715
Craigslist isn't a thing here m8
There's a used items website but everything is so freaking overpriced its insane.

>>1011716
There isn't any bike co-op here, there is one bike shop and the owner is the crankiest person i've ever met in my life.
The breaks i'm putting in are the same brand as the back ones, the same person gave me the back one but didnt have spares for the front so he's getting me some when he comes to visit again

Sounds like a good deal then. I would definitely pull out the stem and check the minimum insertion line like the dude above said

Your bike is heavy and the shock absorbers are "useless" by mtb rider standards, but as long as you have the fit dialed in and working brakes, it's fine for getting around town

As far as the saddle height goes, move it so your knee does something like this

Remember that the seatpost also has a minimum insertion height. Check that too

Here's some more MTB fitting tips from REI

>>
>>1011732
I'm tiny, like 1,70m my leg already does this, if i put it much higher ill struggle to reach the floor.

Just a quick question since i have no idea about it, how are the shock absorbers useless? There aren't many trails around here but the ones that are aren't very aggressive so i should be ok in those right?
And when does a bike qualify as heavy? I don't find it heavy personally

thanks for all the help though

Sweet.

I started building this but never got any further than in this photo. I'll get back to it one day, maybe even put some Boxxers on it but that might be a bit too much. Just realised it's been nearly a year since I last touched it.
>>
>>1011855
Man, can't even afford some brake pads, and you're talking about Boxxers. I was lucky to get my components, though. Pretty rare stuff in my shithole.
UMF Hardy frame.
Some Drop Off Triple fork.
Truvativ Howitzer BB, Hussefelt shit all over the bike, Avid Juicy 7 brakes.
26" trials rims, 38mm wide front, 47mm rear.
Got a NS Bikes Coaster SS hub in the read, Echo TR in the front. Well... Yeah. I absolutely love this bike.
>>
>>1011856
The Hardy is designed for a long fork right? It looks right and the name or brand sounds familiar from back when I was checking out long travel hardtails. I'd love some rims that wide, I could buy some fairly cheap and rebuild my wheels but I just can't be arsed (30mm at the moment I think).

As for the Boxxers they're just shitty old spare ones (busted rebound adjustment so not worth trying to sell), I wouldn't want to spend too much on this project as I have a few other bikes (one being a DH with fairly decent Boxxers, which I'm taking parts from for another bike).

It had a 100mm DJ fork, and it never came with a long travel one.
Don't buy trials rims cause they look cool, they easily get fucked when landing sideways. Get some Double Wide rims if you can. I don't know if they make those now, but they used to be the strongest rims I ever heard of.
...And then I read the part about you owning a DH bike.
There's this russian huck bike trend. Search for "cтpитeц" on google. I just absolutely love the looks and its philosophy. Beer, drops on flat surfaces, and huge dual crown forks. Wanted one. Didn't have moneyz. Ended up building a tiny hardtail. My fork is 170mm btw, and the frame is 16". Looks like a fucking XC piece of shit.

Yeah I've seen those Russion hardtail huck bikes, love them (I love hucking in general, long live Bender).

Double Tracks and other similar old rims will probably be hard to find, if I did do it I'd just go with trials rims anyway with the bonus of less weight. I'm not very heavy and wouldn't be doing super big drops so strength isn't a massive concern.

You're fork is the same as mine by the way just an older model, mines an 08 and I think yours is probably 04/05 (was easy to look up on Marz's site before they changed it to some shitty layout). The biggest difference is my lower crown clamps on so I can loosen the bolts and adjust the height by like an inch. They're actually really short for a 170mm travel fork, similar to a lot of 150mm single crown forks.
>>
>>1011866
True dat, short fork. Didn't change much in terms of geometry. Compared it to my 100mm Marzocchi. 4cm difference.
Mate, just don't buy trials rims. There's not a lot of weight reduction, and they just suck for everything other than trials.
>>
>>1011708
Thank you anon. The frame is a 1986 Schwinn Paramount with garbon Time forks. The headset is an older chris king anodized in green. Chris king R45 hubs laced to hard ano tb14 rims and resist 28c tires. World class Ti bb and 7400 dura ace cranks. 7900 10spd down tube shifters and derailers. Cinelli stem and deda bars with brooks tape. The pedals are sealed chromoly welgo platform pedals. I have since replaced the concor saddle with a 1990 flite and the pedals with speedplay x
