congratulations on your effort- however, it really isn't all that much to comparatively boast about, considering how flat the terrain was. Keep going though, you'll be improving if you keep to your ambitions

Took the Raleigh out on a few different terrains today. I love not having to worry about offroading it because the shop trues the wheels for free. Yeah, I can true them myself, but why would I if they do it for me at not cost?

Didn't my phone with me so no pics of the ride itself. I really should buy a computer because I have no idea how far or fast I'm going.

Rotor states that it takes 10 hours of riding to get used to them, but honestly after 20 minutes the difference was indiscernible. And the BMC is fantastic, wonderful bike and stiff as hell due in part to its unorthodox geometry

this is as hilly as I can make it around here. Theres a certain charm about short hills, you never quite get to be in a rhythm like on longer climbs. If you encounter hill you just try to keep your speed up, otherwise you feel slow. You basically end up gunning it up every incline you come across. Its tons of fun to ride in general, just so dynamic.

Fuck e-bikers passing closely at 60+ km/h. Also fuck e-bikers going 20km/h making it a hard decision if I should pass.
>>
>>1002497
the 25kph ebikers are the worst. Most of them have their saddle all the way down and are at like 30rpm cadence, and they really have no control over their bikes at all. Doesnt help that most them are deaf. I am always afraid to pass.
>>
>>1002497
how are they going 60 km? im pretty sure thats illegal in most places, where i am from they can only go 32 km/h max

>>1002495
Did you check if your steerer is slightly bent? Maybe the headtube? On frontal collitions those are the parts that take the most damage, unlike wheels.
Doesn't sound like it was too bad of a crash to warrant any damage though

>>1002518
Yeah checked everything in the front end and there doesn't seem to be any damage. I managed to almost come to a stop before hitting him and his wheel gave up so the stop wasn't instant. He was on some department store MTB and I was on a solid alu cx bike.

What's a good daily target for somebody just starting out? 10, 15 or 20 km?
>>
>>1002811
Try to do 10km on your first ride just to get used to it, then try to do a daily of 20-25km, and on the weekend go ham and do something like 50-80km.

Took me about 3 months to get past 60km due to me babying myself and sticking to only 30km because muh excuses, so it's up to you and how hard you push yourself.
>>
>>1002813
>Try to do 10km on your first ride just to get used to it, then try to do a daily of 20-25km, and on the weekend go ham and do something like 50-80km.
>Took me about 3 months to get past 60km due to me babying myself and sticking to only 30km because muh excuses, so it's up to you and how hard you push yourself.

Hmm sounds like a good plan. I've already done a few 50+ km ride, one to the next town over (a local historical site and tourist trap) and one along a historic canal.

They were fun, but to do them more regularly I think need some better equipment.
>>
>>1002820
Right now I'm trying to git gud and be able to do 30km in an hour or under, just because I don't have that much free time because of work.

>but to do them more regularly I think need some better equipment.
Just do it dude, I'm riding a shitty bike that is maybe 2 sizes too big for me. It's better to at least try than to stay comfortable until you get around to getting better equipment.
>>
How much does the cardio from running carry over to cycling? i can do a 30 min 5k
>>
>>1002832
Pretty good at least the other way round. It'll probably take some time to get used to pedaling but after that you should be good. I absolutely hate running and hardly do any of it but can still run a 5k in well under 20 minutes.
>>
>>1002841
jeez a 20 min 5k, you must be skelly as fuck.
>>
>>1002811
I was told that you are bexlst doing 3 rides a week. 2 of them short and fast and one long and steady. So maybe try doing 2 10km as quick as you can, then go for 20-30km on a weekend day. Slowly build up distance of all of them prioritising average speed on shorter ones and distance on the long one.

Went out to the hills for the first time in months, and also the first time with a power meter. 80 km w/ 800m eleveation. Snapped up a couple of local KOMs on the way simply because the wind was strong.

Tried to see if I could hold >250 W on the climb and kind of blew myself up. Garmin ended up giving me a new best 20m power, 220.
>barely 3 W/kg
Dunno if I've just never had watts or my form has deteriorated that much.

Also not sure if I need to go back to my old saddle with a cutout or just try more angle adjustment on the current one, it's killing my taint after a bit more than an hour.

avg 22.3 km/h. Copenhagen trafic stops must be a bitch. does your strava not pause when your holding still?

also "vi skal hente en tur i lufthavnen klokken 8" what the fuck man? that makes no grammatical sense in danish, what so ever.

Og jeg burde vide det, jeg bor i Århus.
>>
I was riding my commuter as usual yesterday with my lock strapped to my rack with bungee cords. I was pretty sure it was secure but the hook caught the spokes and there was a violent snap. The hook was broken when it came around, stopped by the rack stays. It was an industrial strength cord so it took a lot of force to untangle. The only industrial strength part of it is the actual cord, the hooks had a largely plastic core with only an mm of steel.
>>
>>1003253
I use autopause at 8 km/h, anything below that is walking pace. Inner city drags it down a lot, and also traffic stops.

Vi er ment som firmaet jeg arbejder for, og når man "henter en tur" er det ment som i at man henter whatever man skal have med på den tur som kunden har bestilt.

Haven't rode MTB since my teen years, but I'm in my GF's hometown and she was busy all day so I rented pic related to check out the XC trails here, which have a good reputation.

>Start off on the marked trails, getting a feel for the bike and warming up
>Begin to feel confident handling the bike, having fun
>See some cheeky unmarked trails on the other side of the river
>Decide to go for it
>Trails are really fun, but clearly seldom ridden
>Get bretty deep, single track becomes very narrow
>Eventually come to a more open area clearly used for bush parties, lots of trash and broken glass
>Begin to wonder if I'm trespassing
>Hear gruff old man's voice from somewhere in the woods
>"For fucks sakes... Go get him boy"
>Hear dog barrelling through the woods
>Do a 360 and bike away
>I go full Jenny Rissveds and fly through the trails back where I came
>Cross the river back to the marked side safely, ride around for a bit more
>Get home and check Strava, I somehow have three Top 5 segments
>I can't even do that on the road

Overall, a good time. Would rent again
>>
>>1004068

See, that's why I gave up when I tried before. They can be insanely difficult to get loose to the point where you have to cut them out, like he did.

It's not off by much so I'll probably just leave it really. I tried freeing it when I first got the bike, back in 2010, but it doesn't really bother me anymore.

Dunno maybe I'll try with penetrating oil one day but that clearly didn't work for him. Mine's well and truly stuck and it probably would require cutting it out.
>>
>>1004110
>>Get home and check Strava, I somehow have three Top 5 segments

>>
Strava interestingly doesn't exclude my Garmin stoppages at red lights, so my averages are all skewed downwards. I think I did well considering I ran a 10k yesterday at right below a 7 min/mile pace

>live in a massive city with thousands of cyclists and cycling becoming incredibly popular
>will never actually get a KOM unless I drive out three hours in any direction and sprint

>>1003936
How is it shit, genuine question
>weight
Between 58 and 58.5 kg 5'9, pursuing skelly gains

Also, my cadence is and remains habitually shit so you are correct; I am trying to correct this, but I tend to grind gears when out of the saddle, which offsets my attempts at higher cadence while sitting

>>1003937
I had not noticed this until a few days ago, and have corrected it to a 270 W FTP setting (an estimate; I live in Atlanta and there is no nearby consistently flat or slightly uphill, uninterrupted stretch of road to conduct a proper FTP evaluation ). However, I believe that 270W is an accurate estimate based off of recent sustained power outputs (in fact it might be a minute amount higher) such as the 254W average held over two hours seen here:
>>1004159
>>
>>1004159
how does that work that your max average 20 minute power is below your average power?
>>
>>1004164
pay no mind to that guy, he's just a fat faggot who is below 3 w/kg

he posted his strava before and he was doing like 13 mph averages
>>
>>1004167
I got pissed at the volume of red lights I was getting caught in, so I believe that high successive accelerations thereafter skewed the data upwards; I seldom went uninterrupted for more than 20 minute intervals because, again, I went out during Rush Hour in Atlanta on a Friday afternoon/evening (so: highly trafficked, dense roads). The Strava data readout did not omit all of my stoppage time, therefore my averages across the board dropped precipitously, however my mileage increased by two miles.

3-4 bananas maybe some sort of gel. your body can't absorb all those carbs at once so don't eat it in one sitting. Before you ride eat some carbs preferably rice or pasta.
2 bottles, one with pure water one with sugar water (guess you can add one of those tablets in there if u wish)

moron here, can someone explain to me the difference between zero-average and non-zero average data recording, and the advantages/disadvantages of either method? I've read a lot of disparaging info thereabout for either and am no closer to understanding
>>

Zero-average doesn't add in dead time, for example if you stop pedalling on a descent then your average cadence won't go down.

I don't know the pros/cons.

Whatever you do, avoid Caloi. If you don't want to waste too much money, you can get a Vicinitech Space Pro frame and then get the rest on mercadolivre.

If you got money, get a Specialized Allez E5 (the bike I'm going to get), best bang for the buck even though is R$4700 ;___;

Like a Space Pro frame is about 800 reais and but after a group kit like claris, wheels/tires and everything, it would probably come to 3000 reais.
Might as well get an actual good frame that isn't some chinese crap and then invest on that later.

How many of you participate in Cat6 racing? There's just a really strong urge for me to pass anyone not in kit. I typically stay behind a full kit rider until I can properly gauge his abilities and make the decision to pass or not.

Had this guy with some silly flappy track pants on a fairly nice MTB going at a fair speed. I was wearing some (tight) jeans and decided to push and ended up being all sweaty on a date.

as you should.. you need to eat more carbs on your ride anon. some anon quoted me about 30-45g of cabs every 45minutes so you dont bonk. This is a little much for me and I eat a banana about once an hour. Those little gel packets work pretty good too and they are light eight to carry, but kind of expensive. I also drink a bottle of water every 1.5 hours.... then again I have lost up to 9 lbs on a single 7 hour ride
>>
>>1004996
Took me a long time to figure out how to keep myself fueled on longer rides. At my typical exertion level I can go about 2.5 hours before things suddenly go downhill, exhaustion, stiffness and soreness. Having waited until I reached that point before eating, I found it takes about 45 minutes for that food to kick in. So with those two durations I've come up with my rule of thumb of eating after the first 1.5 hours and every hour after that. Usually around 300 calories. Eating at regular intervals would likely be better, but I usually just end up slamming a 350 calorie bottle of vanilla ensure in 2 gulps.

For brevets where we stop for a meal I try to eat something just before we stop. Otherwise the ride resumes without any energy available since it will be another 30-40 minutes before the meal is sufficiently digested.
>>
>>1005023
Thats about the same with me, 2.5 hours and I feel fine without eating, after that I start running low on energy

And even if I don't feel bad after 2.5 hours it doesn't mean I'm not biking as hard as I could've if I ate earlier, if its like a 3 hour ride I start eating on the bike after 30-45 minutes and every 30 minutes after

calories doesn't really matter, its the carbohydrate you need, rule of thumb is 1g of carb per 1kg of body weight per minute. I'm 56kg so I eat 56g of carb per hour, which is like 1 clifbar and half a water bottle of energy drink per hour.

Or something like 20g of carb every 25-30 minutes which is like 1 small gel.
>>
>>1005023
also different foods digest differently

maltodextrin as a source of glycogen is in your system extremely quickly, in about 10 minutes

I was on holiday there for 4 days cycling to a different city each day. what would you call it?
>>
A bit cool and windy. I wore my Sugoi Hydrolite rain jacket as a windbreaker. It works well as an extra layer around the 6 - 12 °C zone. Breathes fairly well.

Decided the dirt roads had dried enough to give them a go today. Seemed mostly good with some tacky spots. The dried parts where surface cracks formed was hella slow, knocking 4 kph off my speed. But about 3/4 into the ride I came across a road that was still too wet, something that is difficult to tell until its too late. Tires pulled strips of clay off the ground like rolling a snowman and fenders packed up until the wheels stopped moving. Had to pull both wheels off to clean out the mud which had the consistency of modelling clay.

Between the wind and the high rolling resistance of the dirt roads I knocked my planning ride down from 110 to 90 km.
>>
>>1005832

110 km gravel / dirt ride today. Wind in the 20 kph range again. Thought I was going to get a break from the wind tomorrow, but nope instead of the previously forecast 10 kph its up to 25 gusting to 35.

Got ran off a dirt road by an inattentive farmer in a sprayer. Wasn't giving me much space then just as he got close, started veering directly into my path. Pulled back hard just as I rolled off into the ditch. Those dirt roads are only about 1.5 lanes wide so I'm usually ready for something dumb to happen when encountering traffic.

Saw a harem of deer early in the ride.

The Senses Activ was released this year, does it look good to you? http://sensebike.com.br/activ/

Having 28c tires are great. There's a hill in my place that bottoms out to a relatively chunky gravel parking lot. Those roadies slamming on their brakes and struggling to get to the other of the side of the lot and I'm just mashing my way across it.
>>
>>1006305
I can't really compare or say how it is, because it's the only speed bike I've ever ridden in my life. It's also a size too big for me, so it does get uncomfortable.
But overall, the bike has a very cheap feel to it pretty much everywhere. The brakes are shit and the gear system is outdated, it's also a 7 speed, so the gear changes are huuuuge.

The only redeeming factor is the price and the color scheme, but that's about it to be honest.

>Vicinitech Space Pro
>over R$ 900 just for the bike frame
Yeah, sadly speeds are more expensive here, especially with the dollar where it is now. Although I've found some seller on mercadolivre selling that frame for R$ 789.
But I mean, where do you live? if you live down south, I bet it's real easy to get an used bike on olx or something, there's also forums on pedal.com.br

Whatever you do, don't buy TSW speed frames. There's some reviews on pedal of the frame cracking.

The Soul 1R1 is one of the cheapest, yet good bikes you can buy. The design is real simple and doesn't look stupid.

Forecast showed lower wind this morning, so I set off on the 120 km route I thought I'd have to skip. The wind was surprisingly cooperative despite the forecast being wrong. I got a decent push the first 30 km, then a reasonable but increasing headwind for 27 km, a continuing to increase side wind for a short section. Then a tailwind twice as strong as forecast for 28 km. And finished up with 30 kph side wind that was just a hair behind me, better than in front.

I've been stretching out my snack breaks the past couple of rides. First one 2 hours in, 1.25 hours later for the second. And not having a 3rd if I think I'll be home within 2.5 hours of the second snack. It has worked well but could leave me short of energy if I misjudge how much longer left to ride due to wind / gravel conditions.

I know the guy who made that video, he's made hundreds of them. There is an annual 7 day supported cycling tour here. The distance is about 90 km a day but it take him at least 12 hours to cover it because he goes into every small town along the way to record video.

A new rail line to a potash mine is being constructed here. There is a valley 5 km north of this spot, and they are punching a hole in every hill along the way to create a nice smooth grade for the train. At that spot the rail bed is 30 feet below the road, so presumably a bridge will get added at some point.

That rail project got in my way a few weeks ago. Where there was once a road is now a quarry. The valley the tracks will pass through is flat, wide and flood prone, so they are moving a massive amount of dirt to build a path to the other side.

Just noticed the rail company has videos of that line: http://www.cpr.ca/en/community/belleplaine/construction-schedule spot where I took the photo is the crossroad at 9:55 of the November 2015 video.

Yeah, I haven't really done any exercise other than walking since the end of last year. Also doesn't help that I am using a shitty cheapo 'mountain' bike, same model as pic but with tires that have more cracks than fucking pavement

Do cheap, decent, road bikes exist? I'm too casual to know anything about this, I just visit /n/ for the train threads
>>

theres some good roadbikes in the 700-900 euro range, they have good parts and decent frames. You dont really want to go cheaper than that

I've gotten bored with riding the highways and don't do it much anymore unless the gravel roads are too wet.

I've discovered that the terrain to the north east is much more interesting. Rolling hills that trap a lot of water, so there are many trees. I even found a few shady lanes fulling enclosed with trees on both sides. Plenty of moose tracks, but I haven't come across one yet. Moose can be funny, a few times a year one manages to make it all the way to downtown without getting noticed.
>>
>>1007571
lel, mooses seem scary 2bh. All I have ever encountered here in the neverlands is deers and wild boars. One time a huge deer actually jumped over the cycling path right in front of me, I heard a lot of rustling in the bushes next to me and I thought what the fuck is that. Next thing this huge fucker with glorious antlers probably tried to jump over me but luckily he was right in front of me, it was centimeters.

Its supposed to be windy today so I'll take the opportunity for a rest day. 11 days and 760 km since my last non-riding day.

I'm getting pretty close to covering the last of the gravel roads within a reasonable distance from home. As it is I have to go about 30 km to reach a road I have not been down. The northeast is tricky for route planning since I have to check the satellite view after planning a route because numerous roads have water covered sections and were subsequently abandoned over the years.

My legs felt fantastic today after yesterday's day off. Wind was forecast to be at least 30 kph, so I reduced my planned route to 80 km. West wind started at 20 gusting to 35 km/h and worked its way up to 30 gusting to 50 km/h. The majority of my route was north / south so I had the wind straight on my side most of the time. This made dealing with the wind surprisingly easy aside from having the bike constantly tilted sideways about 10 degrees.

Aside from the wind I love riding this time of year. Today it was 21 °C with low humidity so it felt great. September / October end up being two of my highest mileage months. Tomorrow is supposed to be calm, which will be nice. 40 mm of rain forecast for the weekend, so that could kill dirt riding for the better part of a week.

I took to powermeter up some small hills for the first time and noticed how impossible it is to try and keep a constant power over hills.

My brain seems to take my sense of speed and then create some kind of limit on the power I can put out. Even hitting 250watts on a slight downhill was very difficult, and this was not due to spinning out or technical roads or anything, it was a wide open road and I had enough gears. Then, as soon as the road went up a bit again and I started to slow down, there was 400 watts without even trying to put down extra power. Its quite interesting, and I actually got much more tired than I usually do on this ride because I ended up pushing on downhills and flats where I usually wont.

I like these overgrown roads that get just enough traffic to keep them smooth. Before I got to this spot I had 3 km of rough dirt where a tractor went down the road when it was wet then it dried.

Only 91 km away from a new annual distance PR. Might be able to get that in tomorrow depending which forecast is correct.

Upwards of 4 inches of rain forecast between Friday and Sunday. This time of year it can take a very long time for the dirt / gravel roads to dry out after that much rain. Might give me the opportunity to do a 190 km paved route that's been in my route list for 3 years.

Some people feel this when being left alone with nothing but their own thoughts for company. Many a first time bike tourist can attest to that. Being alone and away from any external distractions(flashing lights, music, tv, traffic noise, chatter) can be jarring.

I destroyed myself lads.

I was cycling quite a lot, about 400km a week, all at high pace because intervalling is gay as fuck. Now im suddenly working full time and I ride straight after work, usually about 3 hours/ 100km because that is what I can do before it gets dark. Then I would get home and be too tired to eat properly, then that a few days in a row and I feel like I have literally no energy now. Probably too much of a calorie deficit, and I pretty much eat as much as I can. Fuck
>>
Today's ride was a bit of a gravel slog, 107 km with an avg speed of just under 20 kph. Every turn brought me to another recently graded road with loose gravel. Combined with the headwind I spent a lot of time at 14-15 km/h.
It took my legs about 1.5 hours to loosen up. Got a few nice downwind runs on decent roads towards the end.

Probably nothing more than a short ride over the next few days due to heavy rain rolling in overnight.

Which is it?

Start by eating much bigger lunches I guess, lots of carbs.
Take gels and use them, 1 every 45mins like they say. They make a huge difference to stamina.
Try and take a few bananas?

See if that makes a difference.

Also, not that I want to get into /fit/ memes but you probably really need protein after your century and if you can't make a full meal or grab a burger/pie then premake protein shakes and leave them in the fridge, you can just shake them up and drink them when you get home.

Up to this speed, you don't need anything other than an OTS, a good breakfast, some muscles and the ability to withstand pain.
Then maybe start considering intervals, spinning and other "special" practice techniques.
