Hi /gg/, I want to start recording my own shit, just for funsies. Seems like I can get a good mic, Shure SM-57 is only 100 bucks

Does anyone make their own music on PC? I know I will need mixing software, not sure where to start there. Is this going to be more trouble than it is worth? I don't think I'm going to share it with anyone, this would be more for fun

Wrote a riff I really love using Emaj7 and Amaj7. I don't know anything about these jazz fag chords so now I'm unable to turn it into a full song. Help.
>>
>>75185808
You shure cannot go wrong with sm57. Seriously, its the first choice for recording distorted guitars for most enginers even with unlimited budget. That says something. It fits so great to the mixt usually even withouth any postrpocesing (except maybe some HPF on EQ).
About software, most daws are almost identical in functionality. As a beginner, if you have not buy your first soundcard, just buy some from brand that also make some daw and give CDkeys for limited versions with they soundcard. For me it was presonus and and I have no regrets.
Also, if your room is small and amp is on the floor, mic stands for drum mics are great choice.
>>

NST is (largely) tuned to perfect fifths (i.e., seven frets). You need to be able to stretch that far to use it.
>>
>>75186913
Try going into Dm7 or just any jazzy chord and see if you hear another chord come after it in your head. Try to play that chord.
>>

just use the regular key of Emaj

work on tightening up your transition. play these two until it sounds smooth. No point in worrying about another chord until you have these two solid. Good start!

More than likely yes.

Are you saying I need to play it faster or add something in between the chords?

pls not

unless your intent is to have a rest between the chords, make the slide between them quicker. if you intend a rest, then maybe let the final note of each ring out so it sounds more intentional?

here's my slutstang, i just refinished it with nitro and it has a bill lawrence 500xl bridge pickup and a gfs lipstick in the neck. i have another black pickguard to put on it when i'm satisfied by the pickups

You just need a higher-output lipstick and/or a lower-output humbucker.

Can you guys give me some advice? I'm looking to buy a new electric but I'm more of an acoustic guy. I want something that works well with classic rock/country in that it has a fairly deep and twangy sound, but I still want to be able to get more warm and mellow tones out of it as well. Was thinking about a Chapman ML-3 Traditional 'cause I'm poor and that's about as much as I would want to spend. What do you guys recommend?

Anyone here exclusively play on different tunings? I hate standard tuning ever since I tried other tunings.

I exclusively play in open C (or a variation where the fifth string is tuned a step lower) but it has kinda limited my creativity, I can't seem to play without open chords.

https://soundcloud.com/lonestarstate/cancion-2

Very related. I literally improvised this in some minutes, not meant to be a song, more like a "sound check". It's either stuff like that, stuff like John Fahey or math-rock. I can't play "normal shit".
>>
>>75199355
You need to switch out of open C NOW.

You're just hitting chord notes and applying effects. This isn't melodic, or even particularly creative. It sounds kind of good, but you've already realised that there isn't any depth to it.

Points for figuring out that you're boxing yourself in.
>>
>>75199401
What do you recommend? I liked open C because I like math-rock and it's good for twinkly stuff. I also know how to play more complex stuff like John Fahey/Robbie Basho but like you've said, I know I'm boxing myself out. But without the tapping and capo, or without an acoustic guitar (john fahey stuff), I feel like an idiot in the electric guitar.

I genuinely hate standard tuning and want to get into jazz.

I'm actually starting a project like Yume Bitsu.

Notice the similarity in the guitar:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPmmN7Ve_Vs
>>
>>75199476
I can see why open, twinkly tunings appeal to you. The danger is they limit you to being able to do ONLY that - as you've astutely discovered.

I'd recommend something like open D (D-G-D-G-B-D), which at least shares a few strings with standard, leaving some options open.

What is it that you dislike about standard? Asking as someone who doesn't use it much, either.

>What is it that you dislike about standard?
I like open chords or twinkly stuff, they're more complicated with standard.

Also I hate the music you usually play on standard, I like experimental rock, post-rock or math-rock, or folk stuff like Robbie Basho and John Fahey who use a fuckton of alternate tunings.

Very related:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSh-YsyjpXk

I can actually play stuff like that in acoustic guitar, but more like Robbie Basho.
>>
>>75199906
That's interesting. I actually dislike standard because there's too much focus on open and six-string chords. I use all fourths for maximum sanity.

John Fahey's favorite tuning was open C. He was like guitar Jesus, he was a robot, he hated mainstream "hippie" stuff.

Some people were so impressed by his music and they wanted him to teach him how to play. He garnered a loyal cult following. Had a fuckton of skilled followers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whlY9906KMM

This is Robbie Basho, I play a little bit more like this.

I fucking hate the electric guitar, I prefer fingerpicking and I use all my fingers but my pinky, I don't even use a thumb pick. Finger picking in an electric guitar makes the tone sound dull, I fucking hate it. I hate playing with a pick, it feels limiting.

>you doing nitro or poly?
Whatever is in regular spray cans. I'm trying to keep this build below $150
>Guitar - $20
>Tuners for 4x2 headstock - $20
>Floyd Rose - $15
>White Pearl Pickguard - $12
>Duncan Designed Detonator Humbucker - $33
>Cheap single coils - $8 for both
>Cans of paint (2 color, 2 clear) - $10
Total: $118 approximately
I still need to get a killswitch to fill the hole in the pickguard because I don't like having my volume so close to my hand when I'm playing.

And yeah I'm probably going to regret the cheap Floyd at some point but I can just get an original one later, in fact I think I'm going to be using it only as a fixed bridge most of the time. I don't like regular strat bridges so that's why I got it.
I wanted to test installing a Tune o Matic bridge but it was too much work and it will not be my main guitar by any means. Just doing this so I can take it out of the house without worrying too much about it being stolen or mistreated.

Usually all my guitars are HH with matching Humbuckers, the Detonator is based on the Invader which is my favorite passive pickup so I think it will suffice for when I have to go out.
Also wanted to try a guitar with single coils for cleans. Yeah they're not Fender Noiseless but it'll do for now.

If I ever decide to spend more money on it I'll upgrade to an actual Invader and two Quarter Pounders or Yngwie middle/neck singles. As much as I hate that fatass those are nice.
