I think it's more than just a maybe. Each verse is him straight up nonchalantly listing off tired platitudes and complaints about modernity, and then just dismissing them with "so I've heard, but whats that gotta do with this [immediate threat in front of me] and then of course just ending it by saying it's all irrelevant when it comes to personal relationships.

I'm not saying the guy's some genius poet or anything but people give him way too much shit. Pretty frequently he's the exact opposite of what people accuse him of.

Bruce was essentially completely over by the mid 90's. He had a long series of flops and had essentially become a punchline for his corniness. Then he made this appearance on the last NBC Letterman show and he rocked that shit and reminded everybody who the fuck he is. He became a star again over night, won a Grammy for Streets of Philadelphia and then released Tom Joad and has been consistently in the picture since.

They hugged each other before the cameras started rolling and the audience "awww"d, and Colbert was watching them perform from the side with his mouth wide open the whole time and the stage manager was grooving to it.
