Gene doesn't sing on as many songs as Paul and after the 70s, he quit doing growly vocals live because it was hard on his throat. Paul Stanley however started doing _more_ physically demanding vocals in the 80s and trying to channel Robert Plant.

Also, Paul Stanley for years and years would yell at the top of his lungs between sets and harangue the crowd about how important KISS's fans were and all that. In short, the guy abused and abused his voice for years. He held up an amazingly long time, but in the late 2000s he finally started to give out.
