Tom Waits is the ultimate late-night-comfy-drinking-beer-by-yourself-thinking-about-life-and-loves-just-chilling-core
also slightly blue
A lot of blues is roughly that
Nick Cave, probably
Scott Walker a little bit as well
I love doing that to live soul albums.

Where should i start with tom waits?

I'd say you go chronologically. His early stuff is perfect for what you're feeling right now. I'm sorry.
Hope you feel better

Definitely, start from the beginning. His first 2 albums kind of settle you in and then he starts to slowly get more experimental and he develops his signature voice. He sounds much smoother on the early albums. His later stuff is much more experimental and diverse so I guess it depends on what you're looking for. But like the last anon said, I think his earlier work would fit what you're probably going through. Sorry to hear that anon.
