I'm currently using Ableton right now and I want to switch to classic hip-hop producing. I'm wondering if I should get the SP 303 or the SP 404sx? I heard J Dilla produced a whole album with the SP 303 and Madlib uses it. What should I get? Help me out pals.
I have the 404 but it was like 600 bucks. Hardware samplers are expensive
honestly I never use my 404 for serious stuff . Its just a cool machine to play around with
the 303 is a lot easier to use. SX is only better because it has xlr inputs and a built-in mic.

I dont believe anyone who says they produced anything on the sp- series
MPC I can believe but you can't even transpose samples on the SPs. Even eighties samplers had more potential for combining samples that the SPs.

*Well basically the only practical use of the SP is if you had a turntable with varispeed and you used each bank as 8-12 chops of a single sample and used the varispeed to pitch each sample to match the previous bank you chopped

You honestly have way more options in creating "classic hip hop" through a DAW like ableton.
Why spend over $500 for a digital sampler with a primitive interface and a few onboard effects that get repeated in every damn lo-fi hiphop beat ad nauseam.
It would be smart to invest in DAW integrated equipment (there are tons of options with Ableton).
SPs are really just for California kids with to much money and weed.
Keep an eye out for SP505/606 and the other non 303/404 samplers. They have more features and can be picked up cheaper pretty much just because Madlib didn't use one on Madvlilliany

Ah, so you clearly know nothing about it.
