The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Oh boy. In a similar vein, a lot of this carries over into early 70s...

-Grateful Dead, first and foremost. I have an endless supply of live recs...
-Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and offshoots
-More summer of love Haight-Ashbury projects (like Electric Music for the Mind and Body by Country Joe & The Fish, Happy Trails by Quicksilver Messenger Service, Cheap Thrills by Big Brother & Holding Company)
-Bobby Charles - s/t
-The Band/The Last Waltz
-Donovan
-Jackson Browne
-Little Feat

Already heard USA (decent), Index (fuckin great, though the magic has been slightly damaged by some of their best songs are 'just' byrds covers) Been adding the rest of the Nuggets bands I've not listened to too. Dunno why I've not listened to some of these bands before though with how much i love psych and garage.

Asylum Choir sounds good, got any other recs? Feel motivated to listen to a lot of new music for once.

>Foetus - Flow
>Industrial Rock + Swing
I knew I was in for something weird, after the contrast between the first and second tracks. The swingy tracks pair with emotive vocals ala Clarence Clarity, but much clearer. Whether he's on a jaunt of constant mishaps under the Grace of God, glowering alongside the climax mystery movie on Suspect, or simply wailing to hard rock, this album is almost a surreal trip. Never dulled out during its listening, which is a start for older industrial.

7/10

>Damien Dubrovik - Vegas Fountain
>Death Industrial, Noise, Ambient
Lets up on the noise in the B-Side, where it's more Dark Ambient. Not many thoughts on this, but not bad. Great Many Arrows felt like the more powerful sequel.

6/10

>Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport
>Psychedelic Noise Techno
There isn't any other group that I found quite as appealing as Fuck Buttons, when it comes to thick, roaring techno. Paired with their knack at editing vocal samples into competent hooks and bubbly synth backdrops, it's like listening to a Punished Dan Deacon. It's probably their melodies that make them much more accessible, which also justifies their track lengths-- even when their playfulness is a step away from the righteous anger.

Slowly but surely, tourney update. More tomorrow.

>Various Artists - What Else Do You Do? (A Compilation of Quiet Music) (1990)

I can't figure out the theme here. "Quiet music" isn't accurate of course, because this is supposedly compiled by John Zorn and features some quite loud and abrasive tracks. "Outsider music" is closer but still not entirely descriptive because the weirdest part is how sweet and normal some of these pop songs are next to the less conventional, competent, etc. Daniel Johnston-style songs. And then there's also the third type of song here--modern compositions from Catherine Jauniaux and the like. Really, the theme might be an aesthetically delicious showcase of production. For a bunch of then-obscure musicians, the production choices are bafflingly phenomenal. Who knew something like this would be en vogue specifically 27 years later.

Naturally, some songs are more listenable than others. I'm admittedly at a place in my life where I prefer to listen to musicians that can play their instruments well and have an apparent knowledge of how to structure songs, so some simpler, more competent neo-psychedelia-leaning tracks like "Dual Control" or "The Invisible People" are more interesting to me.

$3.33 - Draft
>modern classical, post-minimalism

I can definitely say that I’ve never heard piano being played THAT fast before. The flurry of notes that this thing unleashes on the listener from the first seconds is disorienting at first, but eventually leads to some nice ambient textures and moments of IDM-like production hell. However, the sound is fairly one-note (except its a lot of different notes haha) and so the whole album sorta blurs together into one long piece with some good moments.

If the name of the album is to be taken literally and this is a draft for some more fleshed out compositions, I’d love to hear the final product because this is a really unique sound and I think it could be amazing if it had a little more focus.

It is a surprisingly competent album. I was expecting a half-baked set of demo tapes, but what I got was a collection of songs that felt complete. The album's biggest strength is it's developed instrumentation. The techniques used to create the album's atmosphere felt organic.

My biggest pitfall with this album is with it's core ideas. There are some decent songwriting here and there, but Jordaan failed to keep the album's longer runtime fresh. I would even go as far as to say that the various instrumental interludes are completely expendable.

I love Unjust Malaise

It's the most oppressive and theatrically dark modern classical album I've ever listened to. I especially adore the piano series, as Eastman's additive theory gives the monolithic pieces a lively, evolutionary feel to them.

Yarn - Self Titled and Bepбнa нeдiля

Bepбнa нeдiля has a nice atmosphere but the self titled album takes that atmosphere, improves on it, and is much more catchy at the same time too. its a lot more warm and dense and full sounding than Bepбнa нeдiля and it impacts me more strongly. there's not much here to grab onto in Bepбнa нeдiля, which probably isn't a fault of the music, but just a personal preference of mine. chalk it up to me gradually regressing(?) from listening to a large amount of unmelodic stuff back into preferring catchier melodies these days. i think they were just going for something else.

self titled 7/10 very nice definitely will be listening more

Янкa - Пpoдaнo! (1989)
>singer/songwriter

The grimy noise rock sound of Aнгeдoния is really special, and this definitely lacks that, but the songwriting still thoroughly shines. Sound stagnates a bit more here, everything consisting simply of Yanka and her guitar (plus Letov on a track or two), yet she still manages to give the album a distinctly unique sonic pallette with her intriguing, powerful vocals and her varied slate of influences. New musical obsession, easily.

3.0+

Aphex Twin - drukqs (2001)
>IDM

James' forays into impressionism are really damn impressive. "Avril 14th" is the obvious highlight, and it's a beautiful pieces, but this whole album has a wealth of beautiful, singular impressionism pieces that take the piano to new, weird places. The IDM is a bit under what should be expected of James. "Mt Saint Michel + Saint Michaels Mount" is easily one of his best tracks, sure, and it's much more organic and natural-sounding than his other works, but that's where it loses me, it lacks the unique, robotic nature of his best records. Certainly worth a listen for any Aphex fans, but it's definitely not his best work.

Kendrick Lamar - Section.80 (2011)
>west coast hip hop, conscious hip hop

Kendrick comes out of the gate with all cylinders firing. Even on his debut, his rapping skills are still unparalleled. He uses the goofy voices less than he does on his later works, which is a plus, and he's got such a youthful energy to him that's really contagious. That triplet flow towards the end of "HiiiPoWeR" has got to be one of his crowning moments. The production never quite matches up with him, though. There are shades of the jazzy sound he would later perfect on To Pimp a Butterfly, and they're done incredibly well, but they have to compete for time with a pretty lame, poppy R&B-type sound that does nothing to compliment Lamar's talents, all while being uninteresting taken alone. Despite it's flaws, it's a very solid album.

btw someone sent me some supposed early fishmans live recordings. One from 1988 and one from 1991. No clue where he got it from but it's very possible that the former is one of the earliest recordings of the band but I have no way of knowing atm. The earlier recording is sorta iffy quality and 100% material I'm not familiar with. The latter is early-era Fishmans I know (minus the song at 17 minutes in) and the recording is even worse:

https://wetransfer.com/downloads/c3000ec7834dd50e1c30f0cb0e68ac3220170911173539/3cb7de

In the 1988 recording ite singer sounds /kinda/ like Shinji at parts + he refers to them as Fishmans at the end but I'm not 100% sure. Also it is their earlier stuff so it's possible Kin-Ichi or Ojima are singing on a few tracks. Definitely sounds more like their earlier dub-y sound but with some funk + cowpunk influence and in a way is more heavy + active than their earlier material. Certainly more interesting than most of Chappie and at times reminds me of King Master George. Early recording is a high rec but the 1991 version is a hard pass.

Xander Harris - Cry Havoc / Heathen Birth
Was not memorable to me whatsoever. Not to mention, it isn't made very good. The artist might be a decent synth player, but judging from this single, his composition skills are rather weak. The transitions are sloppy, there's too much sounds which don't go very well with each other and the suspense is built rather poorly. However, when he sticks to the gradual pace and more calm and gloomy mood it doesn't sound so bad ("Cry Havoc"), but it gets pretty boring after a while. I suppose the artist should have solved this problem in some other way rather than adding poor "cheerful" synths ("Heathen Birth"), like maybe adding vocals or building up suspense with different instruments (like in Clark's "Herzog" there are kinda similar synths in the beginning). So I would say while his darker bits have potential, the disco part should go right in the trash in my opinion.

The Wytches - Wire Frame Mattress
It has everything to be a promising single - an unusual yet very fitting composition, emotional and powerful instruments and some really bold vocals. I like how it's mostly intense and devastated, yet not entirely. There were some things I wasn't that impressed with though - for me the drums were too inferior and insignificant. The music itself, while is definitely catchy, kinda reminds of something that already happened and some parts doesn't sound very original.

[1/2]
>>
Jesu - Lifeline
I guess "Storm Comin' On" with Jarboe's vocals is supposed to be like controversial or something, but I simply did not like it. For me the vocals were shallow, not to mention how repetitive it gets and if in the beginning it's just kinda weak, it gets downright weird in the end with guitars and such. The s/t track and "You Wear Their Masks" bear the same recipe, yet it works for me - chill mellow music with clear yet aloof Broadrick's vocals on the background and some kinda heavy dissonant sounds (a rather familiar shoegaze element) so as to not make songs sound too sweet. Unfortunately, "End Of The Road" loses this balanced dissonance leaving just the weight of the guitars and along with the "megaphone" vocals it really does sound cheap as hell.

Good-day /daily/. Tried the following albums as of recent;

>Skyforger - Zobena Dziesma. This is an interesting pagan metal album that largely circulates around low-pitched chanting and folk-styled instrumentals, the metal aspect is surprisingly tame though adds a nice degree of edge to keep the album thrilling in some respects.
>Skyforger - Senprusija. The overall progression in tempo and structure seemed more linear compared with Zobena Dziesma though it was still a great record, had far more of a emphasis on the rugged, sludge-slated guitar melodies than it did the folk aspect which I wasn't overly keen though was still ultimately impressive.

Really, its approximately 20 degrees Celsius here presently and within the room around 70% relative humidity, rather comfortable. I hope that you are wrapping up warm then for the rest of the day to ensure that you do not catch a cold and as to quote John Steinbeck "What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.". Enjoy the peripheries of your day anon and the months shall look after themselves, all the best!

>Cassy - Panorama Bar 01
I guess Berghain techno is just far better than Berghain house. The mixing here is top class and there's some nice tracks here or there but ultimately this mix just falls short. I've never been too huge on 'tech-house' as a genre and this hasn't really changed my mind on that at all. The Shackleton opener is great and sets the tone nicely but it fails to keep me interested throughout the middle.
2.5

>Prince of Denmark
I love everything I've heard this guy do. This one isn't as good as his This is Not mix under DJ Metatron but it's still fantastic. The tracks are minimal and the subtle mixing make this release almost hypnotic. I think all of this is made up of original material some of which are on his LP from last year and this mix is making me excited to check that out.

>Can you describe it for me? please!!

It's very very good. Constant, almost ritualistic afrobeat rhythms act as a heartbeat for the music while some really incredible sax work does everything from blues-spiritual themes to really avant-sounding squeals and screams. It's very exciting and driving on a visceral level which is sometimes a rare quality in experimental jazz.

"How to die instantly"

>LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
>Dance-Punk

Seconding Rodriguez's "I assumed this was boring indie rock from the cover". This album encapsulates a high dosage of the 2000's: the slightly dated production, modern woes of North American Scum or Watch The Tapes, and the indie pop foundations of Someone Great or All My Friends.

7/10

>Swirlies - They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons
>Noise Pop, Shoegaze

The Krautrock touches, like the part beginning at the end of San Cristobal de las Casa, are quaint. Otherwise, this is unremarkable, derivative, and unable to deliver a single compelling melody, aside for "If it's a man, stick'em in the butt... That's love."

4/10

>Jorge Ben - Forca Bruta
Small detials from Jorge are easy to get caught on, because there isn't anything else. The breathy delivery of Oba or Pulo is perfect, or the way he almost wails on the second, and the sunset cruise of the title track. I don't care much for the chorus pop-structures, or even the falsetto on O Telefone, which I'd normally be crazy for. I find myself longing for the street borne energy in Brasil, rather than mildly pleasant high-rise luxury. There's a gut feeling I can't shake, that there must be something BETTER than this-- But there's also a feeling that it's just childhood biases that are keeping me from enjoying this.

Emerson Lake, And Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
This is the first ELP album I've heard thus far, and the only other one i've heard, by the way, is Tarkus, that actually has some decent short tracks. The obvious attraction of Brain Salad Surgery is the 30 minute Karn Evil 9 suite, but the other tracks do have somthing to offer.
"Jerusalem" and "Toccata" are two symphonic moog driven things followed by this sort of light track called "Still... You Turn Me On" which has an acoustic guitar thing alongside this sort of spaghetti westernish wah riff on the chorus. It also has the worst line out of ELP I've heard yet "Every day a little sadder, a little madder, someone get me a ladder!"
Then comes "Benny The Bouncer" which continues ELP's obsession with putting an out of place Rock & Roll ballad on every album.
The most aggrivating part of the Karn Evil 9 suite was all the rock and roll rhythms on it, upsets part of the symphonic feeling it reaches at. Besides that it's pretty good, but maybe not quite as good as Tarkus.

Converge - Jane Doe
I didn't know what to expect from this other than it's
1. metalcore (a genre I don't really like)
and
2. apparently one of the better albums from that genre
It's not very much like Sumerian records scenecore djenty metalcore and more like, an actual fusion of hardcore and metal. Which wraps back around to some parts sounding like sludge ("The Broken Vow," "Pheonix in Flight") and others like some noisy hardcore that's not THAT metallic.
It still does have some thing that sort of became mainstays of the genre like a fair amount of palm muted chug chug riffs with pinch harmonics and somewhat dissonant chromatic sort of lead parts.

Кyбикмaгги - Things (2017)
>Avant-Folk, Avant-Garde Jazz

This is an interesting album. It's presentation throughout is very minimalist chamber jazz, but it slowly and subtly slips into other genres, like krauty rock and reggae - such transitions are sometimes marked with Ksenia's singing, which is used sparsely in order to maintain its magic. The songs are mostly on the longer side, with the shortest being almost seven minutes. Despite mostly being a not in your face sort of album, Things is still a very engaging listen, with the strange yet subtle quirks rewarding your focus.

Bandleader Ksenia Fedorova is daughter of /the/ Leonid Fedorov, if that gives you any ideas.

I'm probably going to check that Serbian War Song thing that Dogwander hyped up and that hypnagogic country album that lamb likes next, when I have free time.

Янкa - Cтыд и cpaм (1991)
>singer/songwriter, folk rock

More of the same from Yanka, and what a great thing that is. There's little variation in Yanka's songwriting between the three releases of her's I've heard, so I can't add much else here regarding that. What I can talk about is the sound of this album. It's halfway between the stark folk of Пpoдaнo! and the angsty, industrial noise rock of Aнгeдoния, yet it never really reaches the highs of either of these. It's much more varied and grabbing, and arguably more consistently good with fewer low points, yet it never grabs me like either of those other albums do. Still, Yanka did no wrong.

Professor Longhair - Rock 'n' Roll Gumbo (1974)
>new orleans R&B, piano blues

I've never liked piano blues, and I don't really like this. Longhair is a really interesting, engaging figure, his vocals are the best, most likeable facet of the album by far, the fervor of a preacher with the easy-going attitude of a busker. Everything else about this is less-than-stellar, to be brutally honest. The production is tinny and thin, the songwriting stays within the confines of super standard rock & roll, there's a general lack of energy in the instrumentals. Take out Longhair and you've got a pretty lousy album.

Alvvays - Antisocialites (2017)
>indie pop, jangle pop

The band seems a lot more keen on experimenting with their sound here, so in that regard it's quite a step up over their simple, one-note debut. "In Undertow" and "Dreams Tonite", two singles, also open the album incredibly strong. After these two, it takes quite a dive. The bend towards sonic experimentation means a bit of a lack in typical, straightforward songwriting. This could be a positive, certainly, but the band isn't good enough at soundscaping to justify doing this, their talent is in simple, catchy, "Archie, Marry Me" melodies. They've improved, not by much.

2.0+

mewithoutYou - Catch for Us the Foxes (2004)
>post-hardcore, indie rock

Carefully constructed, artsy post-hardcore. They really don't do actual post-hardcore very well, the vocals are overwrought and the tracks themselves unmistakably awkward and forced. When they get to the art rock/emo sounds, this album really takes flight. They understand texture beautifully, the guitar is calming, the bass hypnotic. When all these elements combine together, they make for some really masterful tracks. They just hang onto that damn post-hardcore sound too often.

Liturgy drummer's new album with a bit of sax and new age electronics, and hella tight metal drumming

The ambiance and MIDI notes sounds like Orange Milk at points. The way the synths line up perfectly with the drums on My House of Equalizing Predecessors actually remind me of Darren Keen. The drumming makes the whole release pretty dynamic and not just some boring nu-jazz record

One of the most enjoyable facets of compilation records is that they can serve rather diverse functions - as diachronic accounts of a developing sound, surveys of a geographic area or scene, rallying points for a cause or philosophy... Or as a synchronic snapshot of a scene or working group, which appears to be the case here with these musicians, making for a loose New York '90 indie montage. Most of this music is singer-songwriter stuff, much of it tinged with americana, and defined by a mid-fi recording aesthetic. Running at 70 minutes this gets a little tiring, and as a consequence the couple of excellent tracks that are present (Lida Husik's ethereal 'Fatigue' and the banjo-driven thumping of Rebby Sharp's 'Wherm I Gonna Go?') don't stand out as much as they ought to. The occasional sound-collage or cinematic interlude thankfully breaks up the monotony and keeps the comp listenable, but for most listeners without a deep attachment to Daniel Johnstonesque songwriting this is unlikely to be a transcendent listen.

Kyle Gann's work as a research and archivist of American experimental music is beyond question, and there are few figures around who have done as much as he has to conserve that music's legacy and bring it to life. Like his hero Harry Partch, Gann's perspective principally sees between the notes of the piano keyboard and imagines what microtonality could bring to musical practice. But following in Partch's footsteps, his compositional skills are always at war with his technical and theoretical know-how: whilst Partch invented fantastic new instruments to realise his dull music with, Gann is well-known for having launched into MIDI and computer music in order to throw out some quite lame compositions. Custer and Sitting Bull is a prime example of this. Exploiting MIDI to write a 'cantata' for speaker and microtonal backing, the music that results may sound a little weird at first but quickly enough sinks without a trace of material to help it stay afloat. The novelty of the harmonies is a poor cover for some almost purposefully uninteresting ideas, and the cover is blown as soon as Gann begins reading in a square, rhythmicised tone from his source materials - all this theorising, and all that comes through is almost like a nursery rhyme or limerick. Such pieces serve well to show up the difference between skills in theory and those of practice.

>Won James Won - Prozrachink
>Dark Ambient, Noise, Plunderphonics
"According to obscure sources of doubtful authenticity, Prozrachnik is a transparent psycho-magnetic deity, which was haunting schizophrenic dissidents all over the world during the Cold-War era. Supposedly, its astral body can be seen in a state of self-imposed delirium." Wouldn't say this translates completely, but it picks up quite a bit by the end.

>Sunshine Has Blown - Sunshine Has Blown
>EAI, Free Folk
Childlish sounds denote some kind of birth in the beginning, and the following electronic wobbles and flute solos pair off excellently before settling into a groove, and the first track breezed by faster than I expected. The rest of the album follows the lead, eerie but warm-- a lot like Boards of Canada, especially by the fourth track. Primitive folk instruments combined with fluctuating textures give this a fresh air.
7

>Somnoroase Pasarele - ABECD
>Progressive electroacoustic ambient techno
The idea of "post-club" music is intriguing. Given enough time, there's a possibility that it could be the music heard in clubs after a century. Even when the percussion here is minimal and the melodies clearly hint at Romanian culture, tracks like 19_02 and 17_04 feel like silent moshes. It's hard to pinpoint a genre besides "Electronic", because the variety in textures and framework for each track is literally foreign.
8+

>Ulaan Khol - I
>Space Rock, Ambient
Gliding through the entrails of a nebula. There's also a post-rock band floating around out here, noticed it after getting through most of it.

fahey still has several greats after '68

america, rovers and religions, fare forward voyagers, old fashioned love, god time and casuality, womblife, epiphant of glen jones (this one is super wanky avant stuff but its fun to listen to), and red cross

theyre not all masterpieces but theyre at the very least pretty good
>>
>>75129317
I agree with everything written here. Excellent review, in that respect. As for searching for some sort of unifying concept (which a bunch of people seem to be hung up on in describing this release)... Just try looking for any of these songs outside of the comp. Most, if not all, of this is excellent otherwise-unreleased material

Some of these bands don't even exist outside of the comp (like the Hat Brothers, who do that spine-tingling rendition of "Dark as a Dungeon").

I think the compilation is extra special because of that

I don't think Fahey does noise that well, and a lot of his later works are far closer to noise than American Primitive
>>
>>75135400
For reference, here are my early Fahey ratings. I'm a huge fan

Not shown are his live albums. Of which, The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick is one of his best releases, period.

Though interestingly, he also did a live album with Red Krayola in '67, which is an early example of free improv and noise from Fahey. It's pretty awful
>>
>>75136104
>>75136153
Oh I'm definitely gonna have to try a later Fahey album or two now because I'm super intrigued. Even if they're not solid, I'd be curious to see how he branches out into noise. Only late album of his I've heard is Epiphany of Glen Jones and it was weird af

Thanks for the help man!

>Blanche Blanche Blanche - Breaking Mirrors
>Lo-fi Math Rock, Zolo?
Was initially concerned, hearing those iphone recorded vocals, until I realized that these were ROCK songs, not lo-fi folk. At least, rock with electronic drums. The band jumps tempos at will, which combined with Smith's voice emulates one of those falling nightmares. A very real nightmare, as duel guitars and a careening synth barrel through a hollow society of TED Talks, Grey Pets, and Rich Men. Repeating the song titles ad nauseum does wear on me after a bit, but not too badly once it reaches the end.

That's The Ad has a great music video, too.

6+/10

>King Tears Bat Trip - King Tears Bat Trip
>Avant-Garde/Free Jazz

The 6-layer dip of percussion creates an epic, cavernous effect much like Branca's guitars, and Welch's tenor sax waverides their african rhythms effortlessly in the first half of Stolen Police Car. It's not a sound I always favored, because of the way the instruments melt into each other rather than pop, but the final skronks fit the chaos well.

Elevenogram gives the drums and tenor sax complete control of the track at points. I'm obviously not a free jazz person, but I think the sax's tendency to lean towards reckless lines was what made me appreciate its moments of no restraint.

The band comes off as a one-trick pony by the end, but it's still very good for just two long tracks.

7/10

>Jim O'Rourke - Despite the Water Supply
>Ambient
Listened to it twice, didn't get much out of it besides the perfect instrument choice. The artificial strings made me question whether they were actually orchestrated, and the sprinklings of electronics are serviceable.

>James Blackshaw - The Glass Bead Came
>American Primitivism
Not surprised that this guy collaborated with Lubomyr Melnyk. It's a little run-of-the-mill in terms of composition for minimalism, and the piano on Fix fell more into areas of impressionism. As much as I like Cross as the opening track, it was TOO sentimental throughout to have as much impact as some of my favorite minimal albums. I Still interested in hearing more from him, since this seems to have been more experimental than other works of his.
Favorite track: Cross

6/10

>Oren Ambarchi and Jim O'Rourke - Indeed
>Drone, Ambient
Really effective combination of Fennesz and Rourke's talents. Dashes of banjo, temple blocks and mallets are sprinkled on fluorescent pitches, and the shifts from heartwrenching to hesitance is a lot like the growth from Rourke and Dimencio's Arco.

Is it no coincidence that Rourke enjoys long, slow-paced sessions in his collabs? Almost like this is Rourke's way of connecting to his collaborator, in open-form expression.

>Cool Quartet with Lina Nyberg featuring Eric La Casa - Dancing in Tomelilla
>Vocal Jazz, Lowercase
Literal field recordings of trumpet warm-ups and practice on the first track aren't my thing, but the recordings of the group performing from outer walls and human workings (stage creaks, objects falling) from the first half of the album brings me back to the same story-telling nature that I loved about Teatro Assente.

It's much more pronounced and warm here, which is where the narrative aspect becomes a bit lost at some points-- I can't imagine what would be happening with someone dealing with that much wood creaking, in Part 2. There's a point where it goes from "walking through buildings in the night" to "ASMR with jazz". Even then, sounds like the very subtle humming at the first vocal jazz performance in Part 2 definitely catches my attention. The clean edits between live performance and rehearsal also catch me off guard in re-contextualizing the music, adding slight edges to what would normally be lounge jazz.

I did find the vocal performances a bit amateur-ish, but hearing the rehearsals and live performance flaws probably contributed to that image. The trippy closer for part 2 gave me chills: her voice dies a bit in my left ear, but is met to applause in my right.

A brief field recording ends September in Tomelilla, and the rest of the album dwells in more typical jazz. September in the Rain places the listener in as the pianist, and with every missed note I recalled my own playing when I was younger.

It's not exactly consistently enjoyable all the way through, but hell, I'm becoming a real fan of "auditory theatre".

Jacques Brel - Ces gens-là (1966)
>chanson à texte

Great songs performed by a great singer, with a twist. The arrangements deviate heavily from standard chanson, incorporating a much larger influence from jazz and the baroque pop of bands like The Beach Boys all the way in America. The schizoid, kaleidoscopic arrangements predate the aforementioned bands seminal Pet Sounds by a whole year, and are almost just as cool. Brel's voice hovers over all of this racket, keeping its cool in the face of something more manic and off-the-wall. There are some standard tracks that throw this whole thing a bit off, kind of a buzzkill in the grand scheme of things. Even with these tracks, this is stellar.

3.0+

Кoллeжcкий aceccop [Kollezhskiy Asessor] - Sex Bomben Auf Engelland (2001)
>experimental rock

Weird, dirgy experimental rock. Not dissimilar to anything by Yegor Letov, it has that same industrial, noisy feel to it, and it's mostly really cool. Oftentimes it succumbs to its own pretentions and makes something a bit too heady and cerebral for it's own good, most of the time it's just straight-up cool, anarchistic fun.

3.0

Yarn - Bepбнa нeдiля (1993)
>art pop, avant-folk

This band is the coolest. This and their s/t are both near-masterpieces of bite-sized folk pop, precious and twee while still retaining and revelling in that distant, gothic atmosphere. The vocals really back this point up, they're ethereal and breathy, always the most striking aspect of any track here. Like their predecessor, too short for its own good, although there's even a certain charm to that as well.

Elvis Presley - s/t (1956)
>rock & roll
One of the few Rock & Roll albums I've listened to in full, seems like a singles or compilation genre to me. I do like "Blue Suede Shoes" but the whole Elvis being Elvis on Elvis' eponymous album thing gets tired on a few songs.
2.5+

Napalm Death - Scum (1987)
>grindcore
This one has "You Suffer" on it, and half the band members have changed by the second half.
Besides that, my biggest problem with grindcore is the mixing (guitars too low), the drumming (too out of sync and loud), and the singing (dubbed over poorly and totally out of sync).
About one in five songs on this album doesn't ruin itself for me with those traits, usually the shorter ones. It's still kinda fun either way.
2.5-

Limp Bizkit - Significant Other (1999)
>nu-metal
I know it's cool to hate Durst but this really isn't 0/10 worst album in existance tier. Some of the songs really aren't THAT bad. Others are.
1.5+

Tom Dissevelt & Kid Baltan - The Fascinating World Of Electronic Music (1959)
>poseurcore, electronic
Pretty early instance of electronic pop music. Far out for '59, that's for sure. Album cover had me thinking this would be some bebop with theremin or some shit, it's not that. There is a sort of big band or orchestral part though, which isn't too great.
The electronic stuff is pretty entertaining/interesting though. Little Stockhausen-y but not nearly as obsessed with every bar being unique.
3.0-

Nails - Unsilent Death (2010)
>powerviolence, grindcore
The first grindcore release I've heard so far where the band seems to constantly function as a unit and not a sloppily pasted together recording of something that should be heard live.
Pretty good, and definitely doesn't overstay its welcome at only 13 minutes.

>Animal Collective - Feels
>Neo-Psychedelia, Experimental Rock
Having listened to little of Animal Collective's early works, this dirtier and warmer approach to pop songs feels like the place meant for Animal Collective. The lyrics caught my attention, even when they're often concealed behind electronics. It was amusing to read about songs like Flesh Canoe, in which the group joked about how it was based on the relationship between Avey and Panda during an interview. The gentler "break-up" B-side was a less enjoyable, too drawn out for songs like Bees, but nonetheless pretty.

I also understand why Dan Deacon isn't as liked while this album exists. Songs like The Purple Bottle and Did You See The Words carry the same tribal aspects of Bromst, but with actual song-writing and more restraint. No need to pummel the listeners when the band actually has stories to tell.

6/10

>Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
>Neo-Psychedelia
Very solid for a transition album. Combines the natural air of Feels and the electronic quirkiness of MPP. Fantastic singles, and the amount of energy outclasses the reservedness of Feels. Avey's vocals are clearer, and have audibly improved on songs like For Reverend Green.
7/10

>Telstar Drugs - Sonantine
>Post-Punk
A lot less dark than their debut. I may need to relisten to that, given how bright this is.
Fav tracks: Thoughts in Loops, Ceaseless Intent, Soft Focus
7/10

>Disco Inferno - The 5 EPs
>Post-Punk Plunderphonics
Bright sound collages and samples, with deep punk guitars = v refreshing, AND ahead of its time. Weird that the title track for DI Go Pop ended up on here.
8+/10

>Keiji Hano - Koko
>Post-Rock Ambient
Once again, the cover art betrays my assumptions that this would be some prickly noise rock like Les Rallizes Denudes. Nope, I have no issues with this. Just spacey reverb and chilling vocals exponentially more enthralling than Grouper. It's like an album closer turned into an LP.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell (2003)
>indie rock, garage rock revival

The first couple tracks totally slay, without a doubt. Guitars whirr and buzz like a jackhammer, Karen O's vocals pierce and resonate, the drumming is powerful and full-bodied, it's awesome. It's the sound of their debut EP done about ten times better. After "Cold Light" it slows down quite a bit. "Maps" is amazing, of course, but that's already been well-established. The other three tracks are just a lot slower and less engaging, more on the indie rock side of the spectrum than the garage rock side, and in all the worst ways. I can't deny it, though, this mostly rocks.

3.0-

Hoodoo Gurus - Stoneage Romeos (1984)
>power pop, garage rock

Power pop is a genre I love, and these guys definitely do it justice. They combine the genre with garage rock and punk in such a fun, effortless manner, and all, and I mean /all/ of the choruses are immediate and catchy as all hell. Jangle pop is not as good a look. My tolerance for that genre is already low to begin with save for Teenage Fanclub or Lloyd Cole, and these guys don't do it all too well. The guitars are weak, the melodies get less engaging, it turns the volume and fun down to a five from the ten of the garagey power pop. Fun all the way through though.

Japanese Breakfast - Psychopomp (2016)
>dream pop, indie pop

Twenty-five minutes is far too short a period of time for Zauner to get all her sonic ideas across, so what we're left with here is a half-baked collection of cool ideas that massively skimps on the actual songs. Her vocals are over-affected, she screams and shout over chill, uneventful electronic noodling, they'd be fine in another context but in this album they're overdone and ill-fitting. "Everybody Wants to Love You!" is catchy as sin, but it's about the only track that leaves any sort of impression, the rest goes in one ear and out the other, pleasant while it's there but immediately forgettable.

0.5+

Billy Joel - Piano Man (1973)
>singer/songwriter, piano rock, pop rock

Even the title track loses it's luster when listened to time and time again. It'd be a lot better if it wasn't so obvious that Joel repeats the same melody over and over again, and if his choice of subject wasn't so self-serving. Still, it's a solidly rocking track, which is more than I can say about the rest of the record. The rest of the record contains midtempo, soft, ballad-type piano rock tunes, repeated ad nauseum. It's a boring style to begin with, and Joel's complete lack of personality doesn't do it any favors. He experiments a little bit with more out-there styles on tracks like the opener, and these experiments are worse than the boring piano rock. It closes on a somewhat high note, and that's about the only really remarkable thing I can say about this.

new Enter Shikari single is kinda ass desu
it's just a standard grime instrumental with some with simple guitar lines over it, right?
this and Live Outside we're probably looking at their least Post-Hardcore influenced release yet which would be cool but both those tracks are way too monotonous
worst of all it feels like it doesn't have a proper hook, just pre-chorus that it never gets past. like even the lyrics on it imply that
feels bad but we'll see

Kassem Mosse - Disclosure
Alright stuff, unfortunately not nearly as moody as his workshop LP but at least he's doing something else instead of stalling in the lofi mud. It's like he's looking for a new sound for himself, wouldn't be surprised if someone told me this was made by Actress. Thinking about it now i'll probably add another checkmark on there, it's a really enjoyable exploration of house and synthesis.

Joao Gilberto - Chega De Saudade
Fine, joyful and the execution is almost flawless but it's a lil too mellow for me. It's interesting to compare it with his much later s/t, which on the surface isn't too different but the intricacies like a couple notes here and there, and less clear cut vocals give it a lukewarm ambiance which this one doesn't have

>Ultimate Spinach - Ultimate Spinach (1968)

This is now the second album from this obscure psychedelic rock group I'm blown away by. How did it happen? It's pretty clear from opener "Ego Trip" that these guys are undoubtedly serious about this new type of music unlike countless other groups who existed for the kitschiness of putting on a psychedelic face over R&B or blues rock or what have you. I mean it: this song, for example is fundamentally psychedelic rock above all else in the same way "Slip Inside This House" opens Easter Everywhere or "Pride of Man" opens Quicksilver Messenger Service.

I'm reaching for the analogy, because I think a prerequisite for successful psychedelic rock is the ability to separate from inspirations to just be about the psychological state. So a song like "Sacrifice of the Moon" really sounds like not much before it, and relies on some inner voice to express whatever it's trying to express. And I of course have to mention the eight-minute "(Ballad of The) Hip Death Goddess", which reminds me a bit of "Mind Flowers" from the follow-up album Behold & See, a song which I had described as maybe the most psychedelic song ever laid to tape. This one is not much less hallucinogenic as music, as it drones on and on in this increasingly freaked out groove.

One more analogy. The approach here almost reminds me of a Can record with its singular tuned-in vibe all throughout and its reliance above all else on a workable groove.
