Are hard panned vocals and hard panned instruments considered better than the Mono mixes that everyone actually heard when they came out over the Stereos that had little time devoted to them over the Mono mixes?

In certain instances the mono versions of certain albums by certain bands were actually better than their stereo counterparts.
