I picked up a MIJ Jazzmaster from Craigslist a few months ago. So far I love it but there are a couple problems with the bridge and trem that really bug me.

The bridge is giving me a lot of issues with buzzing and holding the strings in place. I got it set up recently, which helped with the buzzing, but now the bottom E string refuses to stay put and constantly pops out of its slot, which messes with intonation and tuning. It's playable but definitely not ideal. The B string also buzzes a little but not enough to be super noticeable.

The tremolo sounds great but the trem bar literally refuses to stay in place, every time I push it in it holds for a few seconds and then just falls. Makes it damn near unusable a lot of the time.

Anyone have any experience/suggestions here? I know everyone says to just throw a Staytrem on it and call it a day but I'm wary of spending that much money and possibly changing the tone of the guitar unless it's definitely my best option. I also heard buzz-stop helps a lot.
>>
Hi bros, geting back into guitar after fucking years. Stopped playing at around 17, im 24 now and want to pick it up again. I still remember almost all basic chords and the random power chords since i was into punk at the time. But i have no real understanding when it comes to theory and scales etc. Should i start off it scales? I have the basics down but not sure where to start.

once it's all done, it's really nice and stable, but i've been fucking around for about 2 days now with my floyd and the fucker just won't stay the fuck in tune
I'm really close to throwing the entire guitar through the fucking window
>>
>>75075169
I was aware that bridge problems with Jazzmasters are pretty common. I had a Jazzmaster before this as well so I remember reading about it. I'm just not sure what I should do about it, every time I ask I get a different answer.

My first instinct is to just get a Staytrem bridge and call it a day but I've also heard that that might be overkill when there are easier/cheaper solutions available. I've also heard that the Staytrem changes the sound of the guitar a bit.
>>
>>75075406
There are a lot of them online, surely one must work.
>>
>>75075553
1. Attach strings
2. Rough tuning, string order 3 > 4 > 2 > 5 > 1 > 6
3. Repeat 2 until the tuning is somewhat stable
(3.5. If you change your string gauge, loosen or tighten the springs so that the top of the Floyd is flat or slightly tilted forward and go back to 2)
4. Lock the nut
5. Fine tune, same order as before

Basically it's just lots of repeats until everything is stable. If you do everything systematically, it shouldn't take longer than 20 minutes at most. Setting intonation is a bit more work but that's pretty much a one time job.

Also buy a fixed bridge guitar. That's what I did in the end. Not because of the extra work but because I didn't use the vibrato.
>>
>>75075582
>there are easier/cheaper solutions available.
The easiest solution is to use thicker strings. The bridges were designed when most people were using 12s, so modern strings can have trouble putting the correct pressure on them. If you can stand playing them (although, IMO, people complain about that shit too much; if you spend any time playing acoustic, you're playing way thicker strings than most people use for electric, and no one ever complains about acoustics being completely unplayable), put some .11s on the guitar and see if that does anything.

The next easiest solution is to switch to a Mustang bridge. You could also change the saddles. A few makers put out Jazzmaster-specific models that don't use the dumb thread design. As far as the Trem bar not staying in place: use electrical tape. Wrap enough around the base of the bar to create more tension, it's what Kevin Shields does.

I would:
Buy a Staytrem
Put 11s on
Get it properly set up

Then you'll be free of problems. The bridge shouldn't change the sound of the guitar. High end versions of Fender offsets are currently being produced with equivalent bridges.

So after another round of metronome practice, I wish I started sooner. I was able to pick up on posture issues I didn't know I had, and realized I was using entirely too much pressure with my fretting hand. Plus getting really familiar with the scale position and improved timing/pick accuracy. Why the fuck did I not do this before.

one doesnt need a metronome to do that, in fact i find it harder with a metronome because my attention is focused on the beat

It kind of makes sense in the context of the song.

If I had to describe it, I would say that because I was focused so much on the timing that I was able to feel things that were distracting me. When I changed how I was holding the guitar and used a more gentle fretting hand, it helped me lock in much better.

i like practicing
>>
>>75099345
you have a version to fall back on so you're not just playing the track without the rest of the ensemble, then if you want to turn up an indivdul track/pan bass and guitar to separate ears you can, unless you've got a studio level live recording setup
>>
>>75099291
Depends what you're going for. Organic, raw sound? Record live. Polished and pristine? One track at a time, piece by piece.
Also most bands aren't skilled enough to produce a good end result when recording live, gotta make sure they have the skill first

this too, in the shitty punk band i was in we just recorded everything live but our singer sucked ass and his vocals were always way too fucking loud so now if I record something while jamming with friends we record a shit live track then do each track by ourselves on top, once it's done we delete the live track so we can edit everyone if someone's amp is too loud or whatever. it has a lot of useful modes, and good with substitutions.

if you're familiar with LCCOTO, lydian dominant is considered the "most consonant" dominant mode, harmonically. more than mixolydian.

altered dominant (super locrian) is conversely the most dissonant dominant scale and very useful over altered chords.

there's other useful things but those two are super important. harmonic minor's modes don't really offer the same flexibility.
>>
>>75101518
think of it this way in the song caravan the change is primarly c7 to Db7

this change is perfect for harmonic minor which is a raised 7th but its not super useful overall because of the step and a half between the 6th and 7th

in short it doesnt fit well into modal framework no made take a step and a half but by also adding that sharp sixth melodic minor kinda resembles the dorian mode while still having that cool harmonic minor relationship between the 7 1 2, and 3
>>
>>75101544
that entirely depends on genre, tempo and the tune itself. what you're saying is most true for 40s/50s bop, but less so elsewhere. modal jazz most obviously.

but that 40s/50s style is also the de facto starting place for most people learning jazz, so i can see why you'd assume it was true for everything in jazz.
>>
>>75101635
>he referenced the altered scale

I don't need to follow a scale to play all the wrong notes and a couple chord tones here and there
>>
>>75101677
I'm not understanding what you are getting at, why does the min3rd between the 6 and 7 matter in this context? Especially seeing as if you know what your doing, you'll be extracting unconventional triads and 7th chords from the scale instead of just playing the scale in a linear fashion.
>>
>>75101572

Will learning to play like this get me laid
>>
>>75101697
you wont get the "jazzy sound" without using it

you're kinda right but only partially in a tune like red clay you can just play Eb dorian over it all but its better to play around the chord tone and relate everything back to the 1, 3, 5 , and 7

you are a more proficient player when you stop thinking of scales and start thinking of notes, thats what the greats of jazz do
>>
>>75101841
really, you're going the scale snob route?

it's a useful scale, especially if you already have the muscle memory of the MM scale from other uses. not my go to outside approach, but i'm glad to have it.
>>
>>75101886

tell me your point of view
>>
>>75102130
its not, I think I may not be portraying what I mean correctly

I dont think trying to use any set is correct, at the end of the day a scale is just a convenient grouping of notes right

a common and convenient grouping

but the way I look at it is that the notes are individuals and all have different relationships to all other notes

by combining these notes in different ways you get different and interesting color tones and arent bound by scales or groupings

I also just wanna say im not trying to pick a fight with you, I think we just have different ways of looking at the instrument
>>
>>75102171
his advice is good for a beginner learning this approach in contrast to the "horizontal" way people intuitively improvise at first.

BUT skilled players do a lot more than that. they use both approaches interchangeably, not to mention phrase ideas to tones way beyond just the 7th.

his advice is too simple and safe for long term advice. good for starting out though.

Looking for more songs to transcribe/learn on classical guitar. Just finished avril 14th and i'm looking for similar, any reccs?
>>
>>75102265
that's a really dry and abstract way of viewing scales/modes in my opinion.

i found myself thinking similar stuff a while back when i was doing too much theory/improvising, and not working on tunes/listening to music melodically.

work on learning/studying tunes for a while, especially modal things outside of jazz, like celtic music, indianc classical or medieval church vocal music. when i did that, i got a much better sense of the character/flavor of modes instead of the technical qualities.
>>
>>75102265
stop thinking of scales in a linear way. Start thinking of scales and chords in tandem. Your understand will improve drastically.
>>
>>75102311
the vertical/horizontal thing is not explicitly a guitar concept, i first heard it from a horn player in fact (which has nothing like guitar scale shapes)

google it, its a widespread idea

so you're saying thinking of Dorian as the 2 chord of the key? etc

its intresting, maybe its just the way I was taught but I was started with modes, and moved from there

Here's I guess my issue with that is that its in my opinion harder to switch from lets says a 2 to a 5 switching from dorian to mixlydian than just adujsting the chord tones you're playing

I guess modes make me feel limited in my playing
>>
>>75102539
you seem very, very shallow

if you have a motive other than a love for music you wont last 2 months
>>
>>75102559
maybe that's taught somewhere

but the widespread idea i know is
horizontal - linear, scale-focused ideas
vertical - intervallic, chordtone focused ideas (e.g. arpeggios)
>>
>>75102584
Modes are hardly worth talking about, you only get that "modular" feel if you're playing whatever modular tone you're thinking of over the root.
>>
>>75102618
>>75102584
sorry pressed send too soon:

You can't just play a scale and call it a mode, it has to be coupled with the root note of the scale you're deriving the mode from. So yea, hardly worth talking about.
>>
>>75102600
Never said I didn't love music. I didn't ask for your assumptions.
>>
>>75102603
ah
its just simply visually horizontal (one string) and vertical (pentatonic shape)
.
ok
.
so whats the deal
playing vertically as you say is more advanced and sound more jazzy than blues-like simple scaley stuff
>>
>>75102641
Someone who loved music wouldn't care if they were too old for some edgy fangirl club that means literally nothing. They would pick up the damn guitar and play it.
>>
>>75102631
I think modes have their place just not really in jazz

Im in agreement with you I believe
>>
>>75081043
Just harder to do, since i live with roommates who do different shifts throughout the week, and i'm not getting payed enough to buy bass lessons
>>
>>75102774
Never had a lesson and also live with touchy roommates. Haven't had a single issue.
>>
>>75102740
I'm trying to say modes aren't genre specific.

OKAY.

When you shift from tone to tone, you get a certain feeling. When you shift from chord to chord you get a certain feeling. Like going from a Major chord to it's relative minor.

All a mode is, is an extra tool in your arsenal to induce a desired feeling. If you want a creepy deceptive cadence, you use one of the less cathartic modes.
>>
>>75102631
not him but i think you're being overly dismissive of the modal approach. for one, the thing you described is just one use, and you act like it's the only.

there's a lot of things you can do with modal substitutions and basing modal ideas on notes other than the roots. that last thing may seem especially weird to you, but its more about how it affects hoe the player is thinking than the actual relation to the "true" root.

yes very good son i am very proud

>yes very good son i am very proud
fuck you!

>>75102805
as I said >>75102801
Don't waste your time studying modes, start studying chords. If you study modes for any reason other than intervalic and harmonic relationships then you're doing it wrong.

Learning modes isn't so you can use modes like another scale, it's so you can better understand tonal relationships.

chords and chord tones were the focus of my playing for years. that's my intuitive approach to the fretboard and in many ways my ear.

i know exactly where you're coming from, and you will hit a wall if you think its the "superior" approach. you're boxing yourself in with that mentality.
>>
>>75075086
melodize isn't a word, that and I don't even understand what you mean. I'm assuming you mean harmonize, which brings me to my next question....

A tuning that harmonizes with another tuning? Uhh, any tuning if you play the harmonic notes coupled with whatever else is being played?
>>
>>75103150
Guess i'm biased, I used to focus on scales and modes, and arpeggio patterns for years and it made me plateau, I got no where until i started studying chords, and learning inversions rather than different scale positions, made huge progress after that.
>>
>>75102800
>touchy
no, it's legitimately 4 dudes who work various shifts around the clock
also, tips on learning without a lesson
a bit of a premature question, considering i don't even have any musical equipment
>>
>>75103201
sorry for keep saying this, but literally know exactly what that's like to. even where you are now will likely become restrictive in some sense.

for me, coming back to modes was very insightful and refreshing after spending so much time with chord-tone based playing, among other things. don't take "simple" ideas for granted.
>>
why playing over chords instead of the key's scale isnt just playing the chord's 3 or 4 notes

i'm dumb
>>
>>75103306
Given your story, at some point i might go back to studying scales and modes. But for now im making really really good progress, progress i haven't made in years.
>>
>>75103334
reword it and i'll try to help you.
>>
>>75103341
pls say how you got all that progress and how i can get it too
not going to read the whole thread

for context, I play almost exclusively chet atkins style solo fingerpicking. And classical.

that being said, please answer my question everyone passed by because of this heated discussion.

>>75103341
sweet, that's all i'm trying to convey, by all means do what works for you
>>
>>75103362
I switched up my studying focus. I stopped studying scales and modes, and started studying chords and intervalic and harmonic relationships.
>>
>>75103355
playing by chords. instead of playing tonally with a certain scale (vertically vs horizontally)

do you just play the chord notes and suffer trying to make it sound musical
>>
>>75103390
whats the big change, dont you study intervals while studying scales
>>
rate improvisation. been playing for 5 years

chet is one of my favorites, as is fingerstyle. do you know any of his arrangements? they're a good mix of simple shapes in tricky configurations that offer a lot to chew on.

Yes but with less context. A chord is a miniature song
