street culture has always had a hard-on for status symbols like clothing, cars, jewellery. all that's changed is that now the shit rappers are into overlaps more with contemporary fashion. in part, this reflects the internet spreading the same fashion sensibilities to everyone, rappers included. in part, it reflects rappers influencing contemporary fashion.

i find it funny that most rappers dont care for street wear lol. its just straight big name brands with flamboyant colours and textures.
