IDM literally comes from the IDM mailing list which discussed easy-listening techno artists from Aphex Twin and Autechre to Derrick May and Carl Craig.

>>75060208
>>75060385
He's kinda right, first wave IDM like the Artificial Intelligence series and similar comps were just brits giving their own take on Detroit techno. Plenty of Carl Craig tunes sound like they would fit right in on the Warp roster, and Kenny Larkin himself released a whole album on Warp.

The Artificial Intelligence, "intelligent techno" and IDM names used to be tongue in cheek and not unlike Detroit techno which dabbled with futuristic and sci-fi imagery in releases. It wasn't until the tag expanded to include stuff beyond british Detroit techno that IDM became the pretentious clusterfuck that it is today.
>>
>>75060741
Well, like I said, please give some examples of records from the Detroit scene, I legit wanna check this stuff out. Now if you can also give examples as well of stuff that also did the crazier aspects of IDM like what Autechre has done post-Confield but before IDM got that crazy, that would be even better.

I just want cool shit to listen to man, I don't care for the music olympics going on here.
>>
>>75059356
>>75059356
I'd say just about the same percentage of black people like RDJ as white people, it's just there are less blacks in the western world where he's prevalent.
>>
>>75060876
Here's some entry-level stuff

Cybotron - Enter
Juan Atkins - 20 Years 1985-2005
Derrick May - Innovator

Underground Resistance - Interstellar Fugitives
Jeff Mills - Waveform Transmission Vol 1
Robert Hood - Minimal Nation
Galaxy 2 Galaxy - A Hi-Tech Jazz Compilation

Drexciya - Neptune's Lair
The Other People Place - Lifestyles Of The Laptop Cafe
Carl Craig - More Songs About Food And Revolutionary Art
Paperclip People - The Secret Tapes of Dr. Eich
Plastikman - Sheet One

>>75059539

>>
>>75061059

Sounds good. Thank you very much.

Autechre mention Anthony "Shake" Shakir as a huge influence on their music, I recommend you get his Frictionalism 1994-2009 comp asap.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=WD8W9gMDqFA

Detroit Techno isn't an albums genre, but that said all of Carl Craig's albums are worth owning. The Elements 89-90 comp compiles some of his most essential EP tracks, More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art and the 69: The Sound Of Music are my two other personally favorite releases by him.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=itRkCXJh_Sw
https://youtube.com/watch?v=Z68JHf6tsOQ
https://youtube.com/watch?v=WTxWY-0NEWg

Then there's also the essential Underground Resistance, Derrick May, Juan Atkins and everything related to him. Start with their comps and get your way up to their singles and EPs.

I can't recommend you anything too similar to Richard D. James Album and Confield, since like I said already that was the point when IDM severed it's likeness to black music genres. I can't think of a single black drill and bass producer now that I think about it actually.

Fuck off Turny.
>>
>>75059356
yes, Skrillex is a big fan
>>
>>75061236
>Fuck off Turny.
I'm not turny and there's a huge overlap in the stuff we're both recommending.
>>
>>75061236
Cool, thanks as well. I understand that it may not be an albums genre, that's why I said records in general. It's not techno, but I do get singles from Deep Medi mainly still so I know.
>>
>>75059356
Frank Ocean gave him a shoutout

IDM is for weebs though
>>
>>75061355
Ah, alright then. Sorry buddy.

>>75061360
Np m8.
>>
>>75059711
well you see anon IDM is generally based in techno, which is black people's music made in detroit by black people. Aphex Twin takes a lot of influence from Jungle, which is black people's music made in London by black people.
>>
>>75059356
>Black people listening to white artists
No
>>
>>75060371
It's sad but a lot of black people nowadays would beat him up just for wearing a sweater instead of a hoodie.

>Black Aphex Twin fan here

Aphex Twin is my favorite musician of all time. I discovered Aphex back in 99 ( I was 12 ) I saw the Come To Daddy vid and I thought it was quite amazing. I eventually bought the Come to Daddy Ep and it blew me away. My taste in music took a drastic left turn after that.
Here's my top 5:

Aphex Twin
CLARK ( aka Chris Clark )
Radiohead
Amon Tobin
DJ Shadow
And I live in Philly
