Right now it's mostly a front for the yakuzas who own the music industry
but there's still a handful of good visual kei bands
>visual
>music
and you wonder why it's shit
Well, VK isn't a music genre, but a scene.
There's VK bands with all kind of sounds, ranging from electronic pop to black metal, to neo folk, to post-punk, and on and on.
One of the things about VK is that, despite there being a certain sound related around it (although it changed over the years, some conventions remained, sort of), there's a total freedom, as there isn't a certain way a VK band "should" sound. Same with the looks really, obviously VK is all about flashy clothes, make up and stuff, but there isn't really a set rule either.
Some of my favorite VK artists and tracks of all time:
Malice Mizer - Baroque

>music where the appeal is the clothes they wear while playing it

If you think about it, that's true for most music in general. People care a lot about the artist's looks.
To me the main appeal of the VK bands I like is the music though.
Their visual aspect is only important for the concerts.

that's only true for posers and normies
