Learning to slap, any tips?

Not worth it unless you're covering RHCP.
Keep your thumb parallel to the string, use your wrist and not your arm.
If you're new to bass, do yourself a favor and avoid slap bass for at least two years of solid playing.
I'm completely serious and not trying to be douchey. Ignore me all you want but if you actually get into bass, years later you will look back and think "Why the fuck did I think slapping over everything was a good idea?" and cringe.

Well I know not to do everything as slap. I just really want to do some RHCP covers and play a more Jazzy bass at home. Right now I've been playing in mostly a Rock style

In your case I would closely examine Flea's technique and try to replicate it as much as possible. Start with slower slap songs that don't make you tense up, and work your way up. I'm serious. If you tense up, you learn nothing. You should find slapping licks to practice.

what would you recommend doing when starting out besides basic scales and learning technique?

pick a cooler instrument, unless you have a band lined up or some friends to play with you should choose something that can stand up and sound good on its own

Learning how to play by ear is a big one, honestly. Also locking in with the groove, you've gotta be real tight with it.

You can git pretty gud by practicing right and consistently at least an hour a day for 3 years. If you can't do that, there's always punk music.
