I dig some of the more out-there styles of jazz (European free jazz and dark jazz especially), but the big classics (Davis, Coltrane, etc.; even Mingus) tend to sound like boring muzak to me. Can anyone suggest me some records to bridge the gap?

beautiful LP
Maybe Karma or Out to Lunch
Don't bother I feel the same
Well what about it sounds samey and boring? I would highly doubt that I could play Mingus or some of Coltrane's later releases in the back ground, as that's stuff that sticks out. Is it the straight ahead stuff that doesn't do it for you? I know some really inventive stuff that still is within the traditional jazz tradition, but what do you like more about free jazz than other types of jazz?

Have you listened to this yet?
Thanks for the recs, guys; some pretty interesting stuff in there.

I just prefer the sheer entropy and inventiveness of free jazz (especially by German artists); by comparison, the more mainstream material (like, say, Kind of Blue) sounds too streamlined and pleasant to me.
