Are they just a waste? Band wants me to start singing along with lead. I can't sing particularly well, but it sounds fine in unison with our vocalist. I'm worried that this will take away from me actually trying to okay properly.

Makes it sound different so no?

It will definitely help both you and the band if you can do some backing vocals. It's all about doing it with confidence in how you sound. You don't need a "good" or "special" voice, just fucking sing.
Good luck, op.
Have you heard of the Beach Boys

It's kind of a mixed bag. Like if you're just singing the same part then that's dumb. If you're going to do back up vocals at least scream or yell whatever the vocalist is singing . It'll spice up the song. OR be a real ass dude and harmonize. Harmonizing will for sure take away from your playing, but you should already be practicing your parts anyway. What instrument do you play?
Its all about harmonies man. If its just layered or gang vocals its usually trash
