I am not sure how that's tough for a band like Mayhem though. Their vocals, riffing style, and general atmosphere is nothing at all like thrash unless you're talking about Deathcrush which has a far more death metal sound than a black metal one.

That being said I can see why 80s stuff can confuse people though because a lot of the earliest examples of certain genres aren't honestly in the long run actual examples of those genres. Most first wave black metal isn't really black metal for example.

That other anon's right as well in that it's not strict absolutes, so rather than a genre being a checklist that needs to be all checked off, it's actually one giant fucking checklist that checks off certain things, and you put those together to the closest genre that fits.

This is the sort of album that may require many spins, so maybe I improve my opinion. But it's doubtful. So far I've heard it 5-6 times, but it still bores me.

The 2007 album is crap.
The 2009 album is pretty good.
The 2012 album is crap.
The 2015 album is one of their best.
The 2017 album is barely average.

See a trend? They seem to be playing a game of hot and cold with their fans in these ten years. So the next album is going to be good again? (Although, judging from RYM's ratings, fans generally don't seem to notice this trend: they rate the 4-5 preceding albums uniformly, as if there were no fluctuations in recent years. That really confuses me. Maybe the old-school PL fans (me for example) balance out almost exactly 50-50 with the band's newer, cheese-loving fans who prefer their boring, more generic, sell-out albums?)

Don't get me wrong, I don't consider this album a total failure - especially given the long string of turds they'd released between 1997-2007 (their sell-out phase). Compared to those 6 albums, this is a masterpiece - because at least there's only very little cheese on it. Importantly, it isn't disappointing because they'd sold out again, they didn't, but simply because they went too much for the doom, and even more crucially: Macintosh wasn't in an inspired mood this time around. It all rests on his shoulders, I get the impression, and this time he just didn't have much usable material to offer to the band.

The sound is good though; I like the heavy, deep, highly-distorted guitars, and the vocals sound very good. (Although, I prefer Nick's extremely deep, more bombastic 1991 growls.)

But where are the catchy songs? Already the first three tracks are a chore to sit through, there's just nothing there, unless drab doomy stock riffs can be considered interesting. The Longest Winter provides some interest, but then it's back to dreardoom metal, until Blood & Chaos livens things up a bit, but only a bit.

The three bonus tracks are more of the same. Frozen Illusion sounds like some obscure growly sludge doom band's demo. Symbolic Virtue comes close to their cheesy sell-out period; undoubtedly the band's cheese-liking fans might consider it the highlight.

None of these 11 songs are going to be on my best-of-PL list, that much is certain. Not even close.

I didn't realize that even Chileans were depressed enough to make atmospheric black metal. I thought they were a cheerful bunch. The weather's nice and all that (well, not in that infamous arid desert). But I guess there are always a few black sheep, even in Chile.

Get it? Black sheep. Ha ha ha. Coz they play black metal and coz they're trend-hopping sheep without their own sense of self.

Utterly boring album that sounds like all the other ambiental atmo BM sludge-fests. Horrible self-loathing hobo vocals don't help either, just random idiotic screams layered over the amazingly dull riffs. But I guess without the vocals this album might be considered blackgaze? Such a fine line between different types of crap.
